Oscars Of The Oscars

Post by tifosi77 »

I had an idea for a game: Go through the history of the Academy Award winners in the big six categories (four acting awards, directing, picture), come up with a list of 'nominees' from those winners to vote on the best in those categories in the history of the Oscars. Posters who wish to contribute can submit up to ten nominees per category. After a period of time, we'll tot up the list to see who the top five overall were, and then put them to a vote.

Eligible Categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Here are my submissions for Best Picture:

Gone With The Wind
Casablanca
Ben-Hur
Midnight Cowboy
The Godfather
The Godfather, Part II
Schindler's List

Best Director:
Victor Fleming, Gone With The Wind
John Ford, The Grapes Of Wrath
Elia Kazan, On The Waterfront
David Lean, Bridge On The River Kwai
William Friedken, The French Connection
Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather Part II
Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan
Peter Jackson, The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (more of a nod for the whole trilogy)

We'll see how many participate, if any, and go from there.

Sounds like a fun idea. I think it's good to provide a long grace period between now and whenever "preliminary nominating" or what have you is closed out.

Totally, this might be something that plays out for most of the year before there's enough nominations. (If that many people even want to participate)

I like the concept. Not enough time to make nominations at the moment though.

Wouldn't it be easier if everyone just voted for their favorite in each category or maybe their Top 3 or 5?

Can we get a full list of categories? Not all that the academy does but a list for us.

That's a good point; OP edited to include categories and links to the relevant Wikipedia pages for each category so you can see the full list of winners.

Return of the King? Absolutely no question. Easily one of the top films of all time, IMO.

The only one that counts is Frances McDormand. None of the others won in their categories. ('Toy Story' wasn't even nominated)

It's more a recognition of the achievement of making three movies like that. I personally feel that the quality of the film is a bit short of all-time status, and if they had made three movies separated by a year each I probably wouldn't include it. But they pretty much just made one 9-hour movie and then broke it up for release.
