I think puberty is about right. Not that they lose the love of learning, but the desire to do well in traditional schooling areas. The vast majority want to learn about something, just not the things we do in school.

Re: LGP Education thread
That was me. I was bright and loved diving into whatever I was into at the time, but school? Pffft. Happened around 7th grade or so. If I read as many textbooks as I did books about stuff I cared about I'd have gotten a 4.0 somewhere along the line.
Amusingly as I get older my GPA gets better in each program I do. I think my tolerance for slogging through the work is increasing.

Re: LGP Education thread
Those were always the kids that bothered me. Meh, I'll only read about it if I'm interested, if it's not interesting to me, then who cares? Like your entire life is going to be nothing but interesting stuff? You're never going to have to do or learn about mundane stuff in the work place? If you can teach yourself how to enjoy learning things that aren't interesting to you at a young age, I think you'll be better off in life.

I assume you're also doing something in which you're interested or have a vested interest. My grades in education classes were better than in general classes I didn't really care about.dodint wrote:That was me. I was bright and loved diving into whatever I was into at the time, but school? You are correct, sir. My doctorate should be a non-stop thrill ride at this rate.

I think people should graduate high school and then get some sort of job for about 5 years, then go to college. Would make a lot more sense.

I would have gotten a lot more out of my literature classes, because I would have at least experienced much of what the world can bring (good and bad).

once my job evolved from programming to programming + a bunch of business garbage, my love for learning disappeared. i think there's something to this, with technical people.count2infinity wrote:I know I was one of them, and likely many scientists/engineers never really lose that love for learning.

Thoughts?Mike Rowe wrote:"I think a trillion dollars of student loans and a massive skills gap are precisely what happens to a society that actively promotes one form of education as the best course for the most people. I think the stigmas and stereotypes that keep so many people from pursuing a truly useful skill, begin with the mistaken belief that a four-year degree is somehow superior to all other forms of learning."
I think this is rather spot on. Ditch diggers and all that.

Re: LGP Education thread
I think anyone that's kept up with this thread knows my opinion on that. Not everyone should got to a traditional college... not everyone should go to a traditional high school either. The education system is failing students that would thrive in technical/manual jobs because they don't fit what traditional education wants them to be. It's much like this cartoon:

solutions would be very difficult to develop, let alone implement into the current educational framework. I know you have to start somewhere, but there'd be a lot of push back by both unions and the American population.

we live in a society now where we want everyone to feel like a winner, with the unfortunate circumstance that not everyone can be a winner.

So people who dont go to college and end up working labor jobs or filing papers are losers?MalkinIsMyHomeboy wrote:we live in a society now where we want everyone to feel like a winner, with the unfortunate circumstance that not everyone can be a winner.

Re: LGP Education thread
That kind of illustrates the problem. People who don't get a degree end up having a bad stigma. Instead of making everyone feel like they have to go to college, we should be pushing people to do what they really want to do.MalkinIsMyHomeboy wrote:we live in a society now where we want everyone to feel like a winner, with the unfortunate circumstance that not everyone can be a winner.

I don't think the solution is that difficult, theoretically. Take all the money that goes into bs testing and put it into vocational programs. Unions would be fine with that. Politicians, on the other hand, would never let it happen. I don't think there's a lobby for vocational teachers and there's not a boatload of money to be made on that area.

http://www.theonion.com/articles/new-ed ... m-w,38048/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;WASHINGTON—Citing the need to measure student achievement as its top priority, the U.S. Department of Education launched a new initiative Thursday to replace the nation’s entire K-12 curriculum with a single standardized test.
According to government officials, the four-hour-long Universal Education Assessment will be used in every public school across the country, will contain identical questions for every student based on material appropriate for kindergarten through 12th grade, and will permanently take the place of more traditional methods such as classroom instruction and homework assignments.
“By administering one uniform test to our nation’s 50 million students, we can ensure that every child is evaluated by the exact same standard, regardless of background, age, or grade level,” said Education Secretary Arne Duncan, explaining that students will be able to take the test at any time between age 5 and 18. “It’s absolutely crucial for us to know where our kids stand, and eliminating the teaching model will provide us with the most affordable and efficient means of measuring student proficiency.”

Re: LGP Education thread
lol, I got half way through that quote and thought "oh come on... this has to be a joke." Then I saw the link... lol.
I did just read that Florida is removing their 11th grade standardized test. In Florida they have a standardized test every year starting at 3rd grade and ending in 11th grade. From what I've read they're only eliminating the 11th grade test. That leaves 3rd through 10th grade, but it's a start.

I don't disagree vehemently with the idea of no homework in grades k-5. The amount of work kids have to do in school is higher than ever. They need down time. They should have to read nightly, but good parents will have their kids do that anyway.

Re: LGP Education thread
I guess it varies but I didn't think my kids got a lot of homework in 1 - 3(decades ago). Same with my grandkids as far as I know. I don't see anything wrong with an hour's worth. It might be helpful for kids who aren't doing well to get HW for subjects they struggle in, although there would be issues with that. Maybe it could be done as a suggestion to parents who could follow the advice or ignore it.MWB wrote:I don't disagree vehemently with the idea of no homework in grades k-5. Re: LGP Education thread
Yeah, a little homework isn't going to hurt anyone. A couple hours is ridiculous, and what my 5th grader gets every now and then. Good parents will have their kids do the work and give them extra help regardless. Unfortunately, the ones who need the help the most are often without help at home and the homework becomes meaningless.
