Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Easy.
"Aerobic activity, on the other hand, is inefficient and ineffective no matter your goal." Unless you're, you know, training to run a marathon. What a numpty ****. That really shortsighted statement tells me everything I need to know about this guy (and a little about you, tsk).
Sorry broseph, I'm married to a former collegiate runner and run distance myself. That meathead is welcome to jump out of a helicopter without a parachute for all I care.
My point earlier was that people that promote one-size-fits-all exercise science are schmucks. All you did was support my statement with this drivel.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Hey, do what you like; you clearly enjoy running enough to become irritated and defensive when presented with information that perhaps you aren't getting all you could be getting out of your training. Perhaps that's benefit enough.
But I am curious....... the metabolic data in my last post: Do you refute any of if, and if so on what scientific grounds?

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
The only metabolic data I consider is the monitoring of my own system. The poster above was spot on, the relationship between calories in v. calories out is the only thing that matters for weight loss. When I want to lose weight, I create a calorie deficit. Then I lose weight whether I'm training for a marathon or spending 2hrs a day in the gym. (In 2011 I ran the MCMarathon in November, then switched to a heavy weight training regimen and the weight loss leveled off, but that's to be expected).
I've been in a bad mood the last two days, really tired of school and that is where the irrationally high tension is coming from in this instance. My bottom line that you don't seem to agree with me on is that exercise science isn't science, people are too different for generally prescribed gimmicks. When some d-bag like your Airman hero says things as definite truths ("no matter your goal") it misleads people that might not be able to really benefit from the thing he's pushing. I was in the military, I've done many different kinds of regimented PT programs. I've done Crossfit, HITT, P90X, Insanity, etc. The only thing that helps me get to my optimal weight is endurance running along with a healthy correctly portioned dietary lifestyle. Your buddy thinks that's inefficient and wrong because it doesn't fit within his non-scientific view of what's right. **** him and his ilk, they're doing harm and a criminals in my book.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I had no idea that dissing aerobic exercise would cause such an IBS flare up. No harm meant.
To be fair, a big part of my interest in Lauren's program is that I completely abhor cardio training. If there's a day I'm gonna find a reason to skip, it'll be cardio day; that's why I hate Sean T's programs so much.

*shrug*
Just be like my wife, train for a marathon 4 days a week and lift 3 days. All bases covered.

I was truly admazed when I had the most success at gaining muscle, how much you have to eat. Felt like all you did was eat and then you have to deal with gaining fat at the same time.

Well this guy he was quoting wasn't necessarily wrong at all. You just projected your goals onto his advice which makes it seem terrible. You are a runner, then obviously you need cardio. If your goal is simply losing weight, it's much (much x100 for me) easier and vastly more economical to cut on a 5-700 caloric deficit than to eat at maintenaince and burn 5-700 calories a day through training and exercise. Will you be as "in shape"? Possibly but not necessarily. Would a combination be effective? Sure. But if you're trying to "look" fit, diet is easily the most important variable in the equation.

I can't make my point any clearer, so agree to disagree. Do what works for you, I'm not telling you what works for you.

I'd say 70-80% of losing weight and "looking fit" happens in the kitchen. You can work out (aerobic or anaerobic) all you want but if you eat fast food 3x a day you will not get the desired results (assuming you have a normal to below normal metabolism).
On the flip side, I lost my first 25lbs without changing a single thing about my diet. It was 100% exercise. The reason was that I went from a totally sedentary lifestyle (the longest continuous movement I had during a day was my walk to my car in the morning and to my couch in the evening) to HIIT training 3 days a week.
When I changed my diet to something extremely healthy and geared toward my body type, goals, and type of exercise I was doing I lost another 50lbs. When that plateaued I changed up my workout routine (4 days of HIIT and 2 days of Olympic lifting) and lost the other 25lbs.
Now...I've gained 75lbs back and am a miserable fat body again...
Hopefully that changes when we move and I am no longer a slave to my job and commute.

The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. That is why you lift.DontToewsMeBro wrote:The whole "boosting your metabolism" aspect of fitness is a crock. Your metabolism won't differ much at all no matter what you do, and doesn't significantly alter as you age either. Sure, if you're cutting to get down to comp. body fat levels, little things like drinking plenty of ice water (known to 'boost' metabolism) helps but it comes down to simple thermodynamics, Calories in v. Calories out.

I never said cardio won't work, or that you can't get results. I said that it's not the most efficient way of achieving those results, unless you are doing event-specific training.dodint wrote:I can't make my point any clearer, so agree to disagree. Are you training to run? Good.
Are you running to train? Not as good.
That's all.
