Apparently Richards got himself into a situation in Mexico and was photographed in the moment

Re: Draft Weekend Rumors and Trades
I'm just going to go ahead and say it, if Richards got caught with drugs - the NHL is looking at about a years worth of bad publicity. The contract termination is going to play out in a court room and the final verdict could set a precedent for the wording in contracts across the big four professional sports. As well as what recourse a team can take.Lt. Dish wrote:You guys are wasting good effort and valuable time that should be used to watch the Mike Richards contract termination drama in L.A. and/or Don Sweeney immolating the Bruins.
It's going to be in the spotlight and the NHL and ______ (insert drug) are going to be synonymous in the media coverage.
If it isn't drugs or some kind of felony, LA is going to look really stupid to the point where I can't see players wanting to sign there.

Well it was obviously so bad the GM had to divulge it in good faith before trade talks went further... Otherwise it would open up liabilities down the road for the kings.
So for fun let's start the list of possibilities captain leadership may have done:
Narcotics
Steroids
Child porn
Gun trafficking
Money laundering
Human trafficking

I was fine with bashing Richards when he played with the Flyers, but if the stories are true, i can't kick a guy for battling demons like substance abuse and what it does to your mind and makes you do stupid things.AlexPKeaton wrote:You left out:marek wrote:Well it was obviously so bad the GM had to divulge it in good faith before trade talks went further... I am sick of this cop-out.
Assuming Richards is an addict, he wasn't some inner-city YOOF with no daddy, no role models, and no future. He is an athlete paid handsomely to play a children's game with fame and advantages NONE of us will ever realize. HE CHOSE to dabble in illegal drugs...screw him...let him FALL...

As I said before, Richards lives close to here and it's no secret that he's a huge party guy. His house on Lake of the Woods has been the scene of many a party over the years. He was blasted in Philly for living the party life and it's no different in Kenora when he's back home with his boys.Abe Frohman wrote:darkstar57 wrote:I was fine with bashing Richards when he played with the Flyers, but if the stories are true, i can't kick a guy for battling demons like substance abuse and what it does to your mind and makes you do stupid things.AlexPKeaton wrote:You left out:marek wrote:Well it was obviously so bad the GM had to divulge it in good faith before trade talks went further... An Elite athlete who plays through pain, broken bones, injuries that should sideline for a while. these guys turn to drugs and liquor to dull the senses and try to ease the burden.Abe Frohman wrote:darkstar57 wrote:I was fine with bashing Richards when he played with the Flyers, but if the stories are true, i can't kick a guy for battling demons like substance abuse and what it does to your mind and makes you do stupid things.AlexPKeaton wrote:You left out:marek wrote:Well it was obviously so bad the GM had to divulge it in good faith before trade talks went further... I wont get into substance abuse debate, but it is a very real thing that can affect anyone no matter your position in life how successful or not successful you are.

Boo-freakin'-hoo...
I work on addicts daily...greater than 99% of tge time it is a LIFESTYLE CHOICE...deserving of neither pity nor MY TAX DOLLARS to treat...
If it were percocets or vicodin for chronic pain, the Kings wouldn't have filed against him. This (if true that it is drug-related) is recreational. Screw him...pissing away all that $$ and lifestyle...

Ouch, I would hate to be the addict you work with.....that person kind of has no shot if you already have that mindset....

I don't act as a counselor nor treatment facility. I deliver anesthesia during surgical procedures.
Drug abuse is rampant...and as I said, almost always a LIFESTYLE CHOICE. Time for society to stop cleaning up the messes caused by others.

Making a statement on society (in general), but IF he resides at any time in the US, it is my (OUR) tax dollars that are required to support methadone clinics, etc. The cost of 'recreational' drug use (to the economy) is astronomical...darkstar57 wrote:by the way, this appears to have happened in canada, so is it really your tax dollars being wasted?

That's not enough to terminate a contract, is it? There has to be something else with this.seabiscuit wrote:Mike Richards

So if true, can we really be surprised that a professional athlete that takes a physical beating a 100 days a year would have some pain issues that could become addiction? All the comments about cocaine use and the like seems to have been premature and a bit childish. If this is true, I do not agree with the breach of contract BS. This is a angle to get out of paying a guy that was a mistake to sign. You can believe if this was a solid player and committed teammate the team would stand behind him.
Just my opinion though

Depends on how many pills he had, if the prescription was in his name. etc etcLt. Dish wrote:That's not enough to terminate a contract, is it? There has to be something else with this.seabiscuit wrote:Mike Richards

The team might not have been aware he was on pain killers as well.

Not sure. Maybe depending on the amount?
