Another FL Panthers overpayment

Post by FLPensFan »

Aleksander Barkov gets 6 year deal worth 5.9M a year. I like that this team has a lot of young guys, and that they are trying their best to keep all of these young guys, but they continue to overpay them and it will catch up to them.

Barkov is in his 3rd year. If he stays hot he MIGHT eclipse 20 goals. MIGHT.
Panthers paid Bjugstad 4.1M annually for 6 years. He has 1 20 goal season in 4 years (3 full years), and won't hit that mark this year.
Huberdeau has one more year remaining at 3.25M. Huberdeau, in his 4th full season, has yet to crack the 20 goal mark. Yet I expect he'll be resigned for somewhere between Barkov and Bjugstad money.

Awful lot of money for 3 guys who have 1 20 goal season between them, and none of them have ever eclipsed 60 points.

Wow that is a lot of money invested in questionable players with questionable talent. I like Barkov and Bjugstad but they clearly havn't proven to be worth that kind of money. Trochek is also coming up for a new contract and is having a real good rookie season.

I know some people are enamored with Barkov, Bjugstad, and Huberdeau. I think they have a lot of talent, but in my eyes, NONE of them have hit their draft potential yet. This is a trap Florida fell in 10 years ago. After Bure left, Stephen Weiss and Nathan Horton were supposed to be the next big things. They never materialized, at least with Florida.

A quick look at Florida "big three" and some comparisons:

Barkov, 1st round 2nd overall - In his 3rd full season, highest goal total is 16. Highest point total, 36. He should surpass both of those this year with roughly 24 goals and 57 points if he stays on current pace. 164 NHL games played, 91 points. 0.55 points per game player. 5.9M for next 6 years.

Bjugstad, 1st round, 19th overall - In his 3rd full season, highest goal total is 24. Highest point total, 43. He is having a down year....won't eclipse those numbers this year. 193 NHL games, 97 points. 0.5 points per game player. 4.1M for the next 5 years.

Huberdeau, 1st round, 3rd overall - In his 4th full season, highest goal total is 15 (would have avg over 20 in lockout season). Highest point total, 54. He's on pace for about the same number of points. 245 NHL games, 147 points. 0.6 points per game average. He has one more year at 3.25M.

You have 3 guys who are their main offensive weapons, and in 10 total seasons between them, they have 1 (2 pro-rated for lockout) 20 goal seasons between them, and nobody above 70 points in a season. Since the Penguins last Cup, the Panthers have 4 times had a player with 60 points or more.

And they wonder why they lack offense.

I haven't had much time to check the board recently, and was curious how your reaction would be that that signing. Some of my Panther fan friends were very happy about this, but everyone was worried it might be a bit too expensive. The term is very interesting, and could make this a bargain, if he meets his potential. His stats to date don't warrant a 5.9 per year deal, but if he develops, he could be a 7 million per year type of player 4-5 years down the road. I'm sure the Panthers were aiming in the 4.5/year range, but you can't risk losing a top draft pick like him for nothing when the team is just starting to get exciting again. Of course, he had to go and get injured right after signing the deal, so I'm thinking this season may fall of the tracks a bit for him.
