If I had to guess - and I do - I'd guess that the team's Set 1 jerseys featured the "S*" logo while their Set 2 jerseys had the logo change the the "STARTER" logo. Either than or the line of demarcation was the regular season vs. playoffs. But the transition definitely occurred sometime during the 1997-98 season.

I later saw an Morozov game worn from 1997-1998 with the STAR logo, so I assumed it must have been used after Lemieux retired as well - as Morozov did not play for the Pens in 1996-1997.
