Re: Official Pittsburgh Penguins Jersey & Gear Discussion Th
There are night and day differences in the quality between Adidas retail "authentics" and the actual jerseys worn by the team. The biggest of which is the lettering, but the material is completely different as well. I checked out one of these retail authentics while wearing by game-issued Adidas and I was shocked at the differences. However both House o' Hockey and Pro Knitwear will letter a blank jersey for you. That's one way of getting a retail authentic to not look as "cheap" as a retail authentic.

Re: Official Pittsburgh Penguins Jersey & Gear Discussion Th
Hello folks. I was hoping I could get some advice on a jersey for my son for Christmas. He would like to get a Pens jersey with our last name and his hockey number. Basically a customized jersey in time for Christmas. It does not have to be authentic or exactly like what the pros wear. I was hoping for sewn on patches, letters, etc. I'm leaning towards the largest Youth size, but it's been recommended to me to get it bigger as an Adult small. From my research, this affects the brand and cut. I see fanatics, Adidas, etc. Basically, I'm totally confused as to what direction to go. And of course, I think I'm doing this way ahead of time for Christmas, but in reality it seems I am not. I'm late. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Official Pittsburgh Penguins Jersey & Gear Discussion Th
I have noticed that the Adidas "authentic" adizeros have begun to hit ebay on the cheap, with private persons selling the odd jersey very cheap.
Is this an indication adidas might be changing the jersey concept for next year?
Or is it perhaps only a product of Adidas running the 2nd year and more jerseys on the market?
---
I bought a size 42 home black with Crosby customization for only 70$ from a hockey shop in sweden. (weird price dump)
I mean, at that price, I wont even complain about the quality.
---
Again, I will give adidas credit for offering size 42 and 44.
For the first time, I can actually buy a hockey jersey that I do not drown in.
The Reebok authentic size 46 and premier size Small was too big for me.

Be careful, Lesky. Adidas-branded Chinese knockoffs are flooding the market as well, and they're selling around $70 on eBay.
If these are, indeed, retail authentics, I'd think that the reason for the lowered prices is the fact that shops aren't moving them. The quality really is similar to a Reebok Premier - lettering included - with a fight strap sewn into it. I don't know if pictures will help make a comparison, but here are some close-ups of an actual jersey from the team: https://jeffshly.weebly.com/2017-18-adi ... -cole.html. If you want some tighter shots of specific areas, let me know. I can get those once I get home from this work trip I'm on.

A small detail I noticed with the new "authentic" 3rds is that they don't have the little adidas circle logo on the bottom front. Maybe none of the jerseys did this year, but I noticed the 3rd does not.
There is a Chinese knockoff 3rd on eBay that does have it though, lol.

A couple of new additions to the collection:
A pieced-together Jack Johnson "Stronger Than Hate" home jersey https://jeffshly.weebly.com/2017-18-adi ... hnson.html
...and one that I'd never thought I'd get, a Kris Letang team-issued 2016-17 Alternate!! https://jeffshly.weebly.com/2016-17-ree ... etang.html

I think the league designed the themes, with one jersey color and one color for trim and lettering. Horrible job, IMO. Compare the 2017 Stadium Series jerseys, which has elements specific to the team, the venue, and the history. The new jerseys just seem to be rushed together by a marketing intern, much like the 2014 SS jerseys.

I'm so disappointed in the lackluster quality of the Adidas jerseys that unless I find a team issued or game worn, I'll hold on to my money.

When those jerseys and logo came out in the 90's many of us hated them. I am glad they are not bringing them back.

As I've posted elsewhere...
Are they simple? Yes. But they are basically an ode to the Steelers Color Rush jersey (which makes sense on a level, being a stadium game), which I love and have considered buying for a few years. And I love hockey more than football, so I can get a Pens Color Rush jersey instead of a Steelers one. Double win for me.
These things with the whole getup have a good deal of attitude. I'm excited!

Seeing Sid wear it, I don’t hate it as much. But those orange horror show flyer jerseys are vomit.Great58 wrote:The 2014 SS jerseys were blah. As far as I'm concerned, that's about the only redeeming quality of these jerseys!blurryhaze312 wrote:Wish that was on the collar of all our jerseys.

Re: Official Pittsburgh Penguins Jersey & Gear Discussion Th
My review
I gotta say...I'm pretty impressed with these in person. A few minor complaints, but some can't be helped. First and foremost I wish there was a Made in Canada version like the team wears. Loved the heaviness of the Edge 2.0 jerseys. The Adi jerseys are a little lightweight for me, but nothing can be done about that I guess. Also a little miffed about how the arm numbers got a bit wrinkled, but that's nothing a quick pass with an iron won't fix. Also to be expected when the numbers are single-layer twill I guess...just simply not as thick and sturdy as standard two-layer numbers, plus they are also larger in size so there's more to wrinkle.
That said, I really like them. The crest is pretty cool in that it's not normal twill like the other Adi jerseys. If you're familiar with our alternate jerseys from this season, that crest is very, very thin to the touch. The one on the SS jersey is at least twice as thick; it's a bit textured, almost like a canvas material. I really like it. In photos it looks kind of bland with just the single color, but the texture of it brings a different dimension to it in person.
Pleasantly surprised about the quality of the customization. All twill numbers/letters, all definitely zig-zag stitched around the edges, including the triple straight stitch around the inside edge of the numbers. They actually stitched the triple detail straight through the numbers and jersey, which isn't what I would have done, but at least you know that's real stitch work as well and not a fakery like a lot of their other customizations you find at Pens Gear. Name is on a name plate that is also stitched to the jersey, with the name plate material matching the jersey. I make that last note because I was surprised to see that a great deal of the other pre-customized jerseys hanging in the Cranberry shop had off-color yellow name plates for the alternate jerseys, and even some had twill plates instead of jersey fabric.
I spent probably 10-15 minutes looking over what they had available. Was impressed enough to buy a Crosby. They said blanks are $200, with $70 for any customization. With the quality of the customization on the pre-customized ones I was happy enough considering you'll pay that at least if not more at a shop to get a name put on it after the fact. I also wondered to myself if any shops would even do kits for these with the triple stitch on the numbers. Already since being home I saw someone on Reddit say they called Pro Knitwear and they won't know until next week if they can even do that detail for customers.
I'm holding on to my receipt just in case these came pre-customized from Adi and Dick's gets the exact same quality item, as I have a gift card to bring the price down a smidge. Otherwise, Pens Gear might be the place to go for once.

When I was first getting into jerseys back in the fall of 1990, John Cullen was the first player I ever considered my favorite, and the first jersey I bought was a Cullen Penguins Home Replica. Back then, I hadn't yet learned about the difference between authentic and replica jerseys, and actual game-worn jerseys weren't even on my radar screen.
Fast forward almost 30 years later and I'm ecstatic to add the very jersey Cully wore - this 1990-91 Set 2 Alternate Captain's jersey - when I bought my first jersey, a replica of this one. Talk about bringing my collection full circle!
This jersey was his last home jersey before being traded to Hartford (the trade that brought Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelsson to Pittsburgh). Cullen tallied a goal and two assists and was a +4 in his final game wearing this jersey, an 11-4 win over Toronto on February 21, 1991.
Special thanks to Casey Samuelson of https://www.penguinschronicles.com/ for his help on researching this jersey!

Sorry to ask this for the millionth time; just scored a vintage 1990 blank jersey, and I'd like to get it customized. Is the house of hockey still the best in town? Any other options? Thanks!
