Rumbles over the line…
Does anyone else notice how often our new commentator uses the phrase, “rumbles over the line”?
How many times can someone rumble over the line each and every game?

Which new commentator? A name would be helpful.

I think it's Getzoff who uses "snapper" a lot. That can get a little annoying. I haven't heard "rumbles over the line" so I'm not sure who that is. Army maybe ?

Re: Rumbles over the line…
Speaking of, am I the only one who finds it annoying that you never know who you're gonna get for color commentary on any given day? I swear the Pens now have a half roster full of commenters.
Also, WHY IS POTASH NOT DOING PLAYER INTERVIEWS???? I like Haley Hunter, but I feel like they added her simply because all the other teams have a woman doing them. Potash was an institution around these parts!

I agree. Potash had chemistry with the guys. As much as I like Hailey, she doesn't, unless it's DOC. LOL The guys could play it up with Potash.....THANKS DAAAAN....not so much with Hailey. She's pretty much all business all the time

Yes, Getzoff. I'm surprised you guys haven't heard "rumbles" before! He says it maybe 3 to 6 times each game, every game.stonewizard51 wrote: Mon Apr 01, 2024 9:19 amI think it's Getzoff who uses "snapper" a lot. That can get a little annoying. Never noticed it until last night's game after reading this thread! I think most announcers have their go-to catch phrases.Theoldpenguin wrote: Mon Apr 01, 2024 7:08 pmYes, Getzoff. We were very spoiled by the GOAT Mike Lange. Man, how I miss him.

I haven't noticed the rumble line, but when the Pens in at home he says "it's a 2 point parade on 5th avenue" meh

To tell you the truth, I really don't pay that much attention to what Getzoff says during his play-by-play. Just something that's not worth getting your panties all in a bunch over. Maybe if it bugs you, send an email to the Pens and register your complaint. Pretty silly to have a pet peeve over and to make a thread about, but whatev.

People are literally ready to give up their fandom over 4TH LINE PLAYERS not playing regularly. Nothing should surprise you at this point.Badger Bob wrote: Tue Apr 02, 2024 2:53 pmTo tell you the truth, I really don't pay that much attention to what Getzoff says during his play-by-play. I think it was just a conversation piece. I do not think Theoldpenguin was bunched up. Constipated may be another issue - he's old!

Haha, sorry I guess I was a little rough. Just pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Happy holiday season all. Theoldpenguin is back, still old but not constipated
I think it's interesting to get everyone's take on how they like the commentary. A few games ago, the commentary feed cut out for about a whole minute by accident and it was just the sounds of the game without any talking. The ice skating, sticks, pucks, yelling - it was awesome, almost revelatory how different the watching experience was.
It made me wonder if there was a choice of audio feed where you could turn off the commentators and just watch the game but still get all the sounds of the game. I would probably go back and forth if I had a choice depending on the situation. Has anyone else felt this way?
On another note, if I hear, "bang bang Kris Letang" one more time....

Re: Rumbles over the line…
You used to be able to select other languages, and I would pick Spanish, simply because there was no Spanish broadcast feed so all you got was the natural rink sounds just like you were at the game.
It was great. I would see if that's still an option.

Re: Rumbles over the line…
I have two issues with announcers in general. Instead of calling the play by play they insist on taking about their day, or what they had for lunch, or who they spoke with, in other words trivial crap. Second why do they call it the “blue paint” instead of the crease? What is this basketball?

Re: Rumbles over the line…
During the Utah game, there was an option to watch with Max Talbot and Brett Kiesel hanging out and talking (along with a bubbly studio hostess) instead of traditional commentators. I thought that was enjoyable for that game in particular..."So, Brett, tell us about your horse you named after James Harrison...oh, Utah scored again...so about that horse...". Then Sean Suisham stopped by to say how he always wanted to be an NHLer but wasn't good enough, so he became an NFL kicker. He's now coaching his daughter's hockey team. I don't know if I could listen to that for every game though.

The king of trivial crap was Bob Prince. The guy loved to hear himself talk. It was pretty funny the one year he was on the Pens' broadcast since he didn't know anything about hockey.Wyopen wrote: Fri Dec 06, 2024 12:52 pmI have two issues with announcers in general. Re: Rumbles over the line…
What annoys the hell out of me - and this applies to pretty much any sport..
Commentators that have this need to fill every moment of 'dead air' with talk. You don't have to remind me every second who has the puck, I can read the numbers just fine. If you're describing what I'm seeing happening on my screen, don't bother. It's not on the radio..
It's so much worse when it's not talking about the game in progress or something directly relevant.
Just let the game breathe and share insights. That's what I want commentary for, to tell me things I don't see, that the commentator did notice. You can go off on a rapid-fire hype tangent if someone scores or does something really cool.
In a sequence where Letang passes the puck up ice, extended by Rust to tip the puck into the attacking zone. Puck goes right hand side below the goal line. Players chase after it, other team comes away with the puck, transitions and reach the neutral zone.
I'd be fine with zero words being spoken. Or maybe a brief note how Penguins didn't come up with it again (assuming this is still a trend).
Not a popular way to do commentary anymore sadly, just lots of folks trying to reach irritating levels of talkative energy. (Gerroffmylawn!!)

Feeling your pain, and totally agree. In addition to NHL broadcasts, in my case, NHRA, or more specifically, FS1 broadcasts of the races. Being the weekend finals are compiled into a 3 hour show on Sunday, the two dedicated announcers not only talk over the sounds of the cars, but also each other. They talk non-stop about the most trivial stuff ("I had a powerful breakfast this morning, and speaking of powerful, Jack Beckman's car has been extra powerful this weekend").Puck-Lurker wrote: Tue Dec 10, 2024 1:39 pmWhat annoys the hell out of me - and this applies to pretty much any sport..

I've got eyes; I can see when an engine blows up without commentary.
