That reminds me, years ago, a season or two after Lemieux returned and Jagr had gone, there was a rumor that the Rangers were floating the idea of acquiring him and signing him to a big buck contract. However, this would have first required him to divest his ownership interest in the Penguins, but it was one of those interesting rumors that sounds so incredibly chaotic and surreal—just like seeing Crosby (or any of the other big three Penguins) donning a Flyer uniform.

I just can't imagine he'll leave honestly but who knows. He has been nothing but the living embodiment of class his entire career so I can't imagine he would depart after such a storied career, even less in what would be such a tacky and classless way. Like I said before, I definitely believe departing because the team sucks and you aren't happy but you played a big role in keeping it assembled in a sucky manner... that is a total scumbag move, regardless of who does it. At the end of the day though, I just can't see Sid doing it, in part because he's always been class in human form.

Add to that the fact that he's long idolized Yzerman, who made a definitive point to spend his entire career with the Wings.

Regardless of whether or not Crosby extends here. Piece of **** is just not applicable. It's not even useful as hyperbole. Sid has been a Penguin longer than many folks have careers. He's brought the goods and won us a bunch of cups. If this franchise had never had Lemieux, he would be out best player ever. That's not a knock on Sid, that's how good Lemieux was.

POS? No. This guy is The Man. Even if he leaves and plays for the Flyers next season I will cheer for him and cherish what he's brought to this team. He deserves to take his next contract how he wants it. UFA at the last years of his careers and still a top 5 player in this league. He has been easily worth more than his salary and he's been a class act captain. Love him while he's here guys.
This!!! Class act is a massive understatement. I don't think there are many athletes in any sport who think about other people the way he does.

Even after watching this seemingly drag out, I would put him resigning at 99%. As players begin to trickle in for camp, they'll be time for face to face chats and meetings. By now, I think the framework of a new deal has to be in place, and I bet he signs before the season starts/at some point during camp.

I’d mentioned late last week that an announcement was coming really soon. My guess is they waited a couple extra days for the same reason the entire hockey world was silenced through the weekend.

I love me an announcement of an announcement. Stay tuned, news is coming!!

DK has been saying quite firmly Sid will be signing, but that doesn't mean much to me. Sid's not in town.

My guess is first day of camp. It kicks everything off well and dubas can give his state of the union talk shortly thereafter.

Listening to 32 thoughts. Freidman said Crosby believes he thinks it's not the biggest deal that he hasn't made a decision yet. He puts a lot of effort into his decisions, and he looks at it that he has a lot of time to make his call. Pens are respecting that. Says Pens have made Sid several different offers, 2, 3, 4, 5 years etc. Speculates that he will sign by the opening of camp so he doesn't get asked a bunch of questions.

One player told Freidman that Sid is trying to come to grips with the team not being that good. The trade of Guentzel began the rebuild on the fly. He wonders if Crosby is going to be handle not making the playoffs. He still wants to win badly. Friedman predicts Sid stays because he wants to remain a Pen.

Says this isn't like the Stamkos situation in that the Pens have made legit offers, holdup isn't money related.

There is a non-zero chance Sid leaves the Pens. It's tiny, but it's there.

There is absolutely zero chance Sid comes to camp, without having signed or made a decision not to. He's not the kind of guy that likes to get pelted with questions on the subject.

Here's the thing...even if Crosby has second thoughts...there's really no reason for him not to sign. Here's what I see as the worst case for Penguins fans in terms of Sid...and I don't think it's all that horrible:

1. Sid signs a 3 year deal before camp.
2. This season is another disaster and playoff miss.
3. Sid decided that he will play one more year or half year (1st year of his new contract), and wants to go to a contender.
4. If Sid asks to be traded, I see zero chance the Penguins refuse to honor that request.
5. Sid gets traded to a contender at the 25-26 or 26-27 trade deadline, or even the 25-26 offseason.
6. Sid finish his career with said contender for his last Cup run.

I'd have zero issues with Sid if things played out like that above. I'd love for Sid to play his entire career as a Penguin, but, leaving to play elsewhere at this stage in his career with how well he is playing and the rest of the team isn't doesn't tarnish his legacy one bit. Playing only for the Penguins in his career is a nice to have, not a must for me.

If a scenario like this occurred, what would a trade for Crosby need to look like? Seeing that he would not be a rental, it would need to be a haul, and not just a draft pick haul...because a draft pick haul does little good when it's a late 20s first rounder. For Crosby, I would likely need at least 1 first rounder (possibly 2 firsts), likely another 2nd round pick, a team's top prospect, and another top 5 prospect. Preferably, if they are trading Crosby to a contender, then I want that team's top prospect to be a near NHL ready top 6 center. That's almost a must for me.

Looking at a few contenders, here's the type of return I'd ask for from each:
--Carolina- 2026 1st round, 2026 2nd round, Seth Jarvis, Bradley Nadeau
--New Jersey- 2026 1st round, 2026 1st round, Dawson Mercer, Simon Nemec
--Detroit- 2026 1st round, 2027 1st round, 2026 2nd round, Nate Danielson
--Seattle- 2026 1st, Berkley Catton, Shane Wright

Those are the types of deals I'd look at. A team like Colorado (who the national media always loves to tie Sid to) has the 2nd worst prospect system in the league. There's nothing there that helps us in terms of a return for Sid. Seattle giving up both Catton and Wright would be the best move if Seattle was in a strong position, as Catton/Wright has the potential to be a 1-2 center punch for this team. If the Penguins hit on both, that would go a long way to accelerating any rebuild.

I IN NO WAY AM ADVOCATING TO TRADE SID OR BELIEVE SID IS REQUESTING A TRADE. This is merely a hypothetical, down the road "What if Sid decided a year or two into his contract that he wanted to go to a contender."

Something to be considered in terms of "how long Sid wants to keep playing":

Sochi 2014 was the last time NHL players participated in the Winter Olympics. Canada won a gold medal. Team captain, Sidney Crosby.

Milan/Cortina 2026 will be the next time NHL players participate in the Winter Olympics and I'll bet you anything Crosby wants to be on that team and repeat the performance. That fits his timeframe rather neatly too.

Because none of them know a damn thing. Every single "journalist" out there is just trying to get attention and clicks and get paid, so they write whatever. Only when he actually makes a decision will we know. I mean, how many dozens of articles from experts, insiders, etc have there been in the last few months? Oh I hear he signing tomorrow, I hear he signed, I hear he already got traded, I hear he already asked for a trade, I hear he moved to China, oh my sources say, I believe, I think. Bleh. Useless nonsense all the time.

I buy Rossi's words when he writes about Malkin, as there's a long relationship there. With Crosby—not so much. I think Crosby keeps a very tight knit circle and very few things leak out.

Another thing I like about Crosby, to be honest.
