He also said:
--No, no, no....to the chance of this dragging on into the season.
--Still not sure how long he wants to play. Says its a year by year thing at this stage, but he's as excited for this training camp as he was his first.

Curious to see how long Sid will want to play for, and if moving up the all time scoring leader chart motivates him. He is currently 10th with 1596 points. Jagr is 2nd with 1921. Nobody is catching Gretzky and his ridiculous 2857 points, but maybe Sid wants to keep playing to get to 2nd and be the 2nd player all time to get 2,000 points? That would be some feat.

I wonder if seeing OV break Gretzky's goal record will drive Sid to keep going and move up the scoring charts. Also McDavid is going to continue to rise rapidly. Wonder how much of that Sid cares about.

Selfishly, I hope he keeps playing and gets to 2,000 points.

Well, let's say that he plays only 3 more seasons. He manages to play 82 games each season, which is 246 games. Current PPG average is 1.2547. This would come out to an additional 308 points, assuming same point pace. Approximately 37% of his point totals is goals, so that is 114 goals, to go a long with 194 assists. That would bring his career regular season point total to 706 goals, 1198 assists, for 1904 points. Would put him in 3rd career points, right behind Jagr and ahead of Messier.

This has a 0% chance of happening. You can't take his career ppg average and apply to the last few years of his career to project. Perhaps he plays more than 3 years and piles up more points, but he's not scoring 308pts in the next 3 years. That would suggest he's going to average more than 100pts per season as a 37, 38 and 39 year old. The last time he scored 100pts was 6 seasons ago and then 5 seasons before that.....so he's only done it once in the last 10 years.

Just running projections man. Can run his point average from last year then: 1.1463. Still, by those numbers over 3 full seasons will give him 104 goals, 178 assists. Projected career total 698 goals, 1182 assists, 1880 points to end up 4th place career. Let's just say he manages 1 PPG at 246 games played. 91 goals, 155 assists for 246 points. 685 goals, 1159 assists, 1844 points would put him right behind Mr. Hockey for 5th place all time. Regardless, one of the all time greats. And I expect him to land no less than #5 on the career points list.

If Sid extends for 3 more years, he has 4 seasons left to play (if he doesn't want to go more). He currently sits at 592 goals, 1596 points. I'm going to conservatively say he can get 30 goals, 90 points a year for at least 2 more seasons.
--That would put Sid at 652 goals, 1776 points. He'd be 6th place all-time in scoring, 20 points behind Francis for 5th. He'd be 15th all-time in goals.
--Add a 3rd season, 682 goals, 1866 points. He'd move past Gordie Howe for 4th in points, and would be only 21 points behind Messier for 3rd and only 55 points behind Jagr for 2nd all-time.

I think it is possible he could end up 2nd all-time in scoring. I don't think that is a reach. I'd say it's unlikely, but it's not out of reach.
I think the best he can finish in all-time goals scored is 7th, passing Phil Esposito's 717. Again, I'd say it's possible but not guaranteed. Yzerman is 10th all-time in goals at 692. In 4 seasons, I think Sid can at least break into the top 10 for goals.

Crosby also sits at 14th in assists, with 1004. If he only averaged 50 assists per season over 4 years, that would put him at 1204, in 3rd place, behind only Francis and Gretzky. With just 60 assists this season, Crosby would jump from 14th overall to 9th, passing Sakic, Lemieux, Dionne, Howe, and Yzerman.

Health, a working powerplay, decent wingers, and little skills decline will all factor in to how high up those lists Sid can go.

I would say, knowing Sid, he has his eyes on the prize whether he states it or not. We all know, when his mind has a goal, I would not put it past him.

Ovi isn't so demure about the goal record. It's the only reason he keeps playing in the NHL right now. With the competitiveness between these two, I'm putting my money on Sid to hit some decent numbers over the next couple seasons. He won't want Ovi getting all the attention.
