Seems odd that the Athletic has Owen Pickering as the Pens most interesting prospect for camp this year and not Rutger McGroarty IMO.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Owen Pickering, 20, LHD

Pickering’s season started off on a concerning note, leading to a cut from Canada’s U20 team, but his second half was much better. He’s a big, mobile defenseman who can make a first pass and is one of the few bright spots in the Penguins’ pipeline. They need a young player to step up and help their roster, and he seems like the one with the best chance to do so.
The Athletic is getting really lazy with a lot of their writing, especially on prospects. OK, I'll correct a little bit since I thought the 2 articles I was reading were both from the Athletic, but one is from Sportsnet.

Athletic ranked Pickering first, McGroarty second in the Penguins system. Sportsnet just released a top 23 prospects under age age 23. McGroarty was #23 on the list. Pickering is only 20...he didn't make the list.

There seems to be split feedback on McGroarty. Some say he'll be a very solid middle 6 guy, other people seem to think he's not that great. We shall see.

Reportedly, Kyle Dubas is asking NHL officials if it's legal to roll 7 forward lines and a 35 man roster.

Maybe McGroarty isn't necessarily a prospect since he's NHL ready or the research into the article came before the trade?

I've liked Pickering from when he got drafted and he reads like Brian Dumoulin 2.0.

I feel Pickering needs to get some licks in this year. Pettersson's contract's up at the end of this season and I'm not sure we can (or should) afford to extend him. Suppose you could moneyball replace MP with Grzelcyk and Pickering next year, that'd be huge.

From the roster I have seen posted, these are the guys I will be keeping my eye on over the next 3 days at the rookie tournament:

Forwards: Tristan Broz, Atley Calvert, Ville Koivunen, Vasily Ponomarev, Rutger McGroarty
Defense: Owen Pickering, Harrison Brunicke, Emil Pieniniemi, Isaac Belliveau
Goalies: Sergei Murashov, Taylor Gauthier

Tanner Howe is injured and won't play. Blomqvist wasn't invited (older than most, although Gauthier is 23) I want to look at Gauthier and see how he does, and if he's going to be moved out with our logjam. The rest are pretty self explanatory.

I am hoping Vasily Ponomarev, Rutger McGroarty, Owen Pickering, and Sergei Murashov are clearly the best players at the rookie tournament. I want those four to separate themselves from the others.

Big reason I put PIckering in the opening day lineup in the contest thread. I don't think he stays there but it would be very good for the organization if he earns the spot, even for one game.

Taylor Gauthier in goal for today's game against Boston. McGroarty on line one with Ponomarev as his center. Koivunen on line 2 with Broz as his center. Pickering LD#1, Belliveau LD#2, Brunicke RD#3. No Pieniniemi or Murashov (Backup) today, although, it wouldn't surprise me for the goalie to split and change at the midway point.

Has anyone seen if the Pens are streaming the game?

Thanks for the stream info. It's great to watch Pens hockey again. I'd much rather do this than cut the grass!

2-1..

Boston scored on the Belliveau penalty and a breakaway. Pens clawed one back on a PP that looked halfway decent for a prospect camp

-Ponomarev has some nice wheels, both speed wise and edges. If he busts out a moon walk you might mistake him for Kovalev on occasion.
-McGroarty seems to be all over the ice on the PP, in a good way. I've seen him start at the right point, slide to the right half wall, then I lose him and he's all the way on the LW boards. He had a nice first shift, grabbing the puck off the faceoffs, and a few good hits.
-Broz, Belliveau, and Pickering have been noticeable as well.
-With this camera angle, it's hard to notice the guys on RW/RD because you often can't see their number. I haven't seen much from Koivunen (41) or Brunicke (45) because of this.

Tied up at three with a goal from Broz. Some neat play by Koivunen below the goal line.

Broz has a nice shot and looks to have a shoot-first mentality. Good to see.

Koivunen appears to be a slick passer and has a creative approach to his game. They should do well in WBS together.

Murashov's in the net now. Didn't notice the switch, but looked up and saw the red/blue pads.

Every time I look away, someone is scoring. I think McGroarty just scored. The right guys for the Penguins are having good games, which is nice to see.

Yes. He just scored. I like Ponomarev. He's always on the puck. Aggressive on the forecheck.

Broz with his 2nd. Assist to Koivunen. Pens up 6-3.

On D, Brunicke's speed is definitely noticeable. He skates into the offensive zone with ease. Looks to have legit tools to be a 2-way RHD.

Another Broz goal. Broz, Pickering, McGroarty, and Ponomarev may all be NHL ready by mid-season this year, with Pickering potentially being the furthest away from that group. Koivunen has looked good too.
