Any examples of UFAs signed on first day of free agency - July 1 - then waived before start of season?
I assume you mean from outside the organization because I’m sure it happens with a teams own UFA’s all the time. And then I guess it would be if the player was expected to be a lock for an NHL spot.

Harkins signed Jul 2 with Anaheim and was waived yesterday. And it also wouldn’t be too hard to find a lot of cases like this every year.

What level of player are we talking about?
Yes, guys from another team with above (near) minimum contract.

Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately, with the demise of CapFriendly, I don't have an easy way to look it up. CapFriendly had a good history of transactions and a sortable page, so it would be easy to go year by year and see who signed on July 1st. Figuring out if they were waived would be a little harder, but not impossible.

Friedman said everyone else cleared, which means Poulin cleared and goes to WBS.

Teams love physical D men. Really like Ludvig's heart, he's just not a very good D man.

Karlsson was also telling reporters today he expects to be ready to go for Game 1. He practiced today with the team in a normal jersey. I would guess that this keeps Brunicke from getting a 9 game tryout.

With Ludvig getting claimed, Pens are now down to 48/50 contracts. Good to have more roster flexibility.

Called it. 8-) 8-)

Shame about Ludvig, but meh, tis a 9th defenceman, apparently. Liked his physicality, but as said, not that great at hockey. Best of luck to him in Colorado.

Do we have any other Czech players that are still in the mix to make an appearance this season? I think we have had at least one Czech born player either start the season or appear in a game since we drafted Jagr.

Filip Kral is Czech. I think he's the only one in the NHL or AHL, and likely the only one in the AHL that has any type of shot at a recall.

PP definitely looks to be improved. They need to make sure they don't fall into their old bad habits.
Is it improved because Karlsson isn't playing or because it legit looks good?

Looking at the roster again tonight, players should be going on waivers tomorrow at noon to be cap compliant by the 5pm Monday deadline. If we go with the roster we fielded Friday night, here's how things could shake out:

DOC-Crosby-Beauvillier
Bunting-Malkin-Rakell
McGroarty-Eller-Puljujarvi
Hayes-Glass-Acciari
X-Puustinen

Grzelcyk-Letang
MP-Karlsson
Graves-St. Ivany
X-Aho, Shea

Jarry
Blomqvist

LTIR: Nieto, Nedeljkovic
IR: Rust, Lizotte

With this roster, and those players on LTIR & IR, Penguins field a 23 man roster that has 1.81M in cap space based on LTIR usage from Nedeljkovic. I don't think Puustinen gets claimed, but, this roster here may end up saving him from getting claimed (in the very, very small chance). If Rust and Lizotte miss a game or two, Puustinen stays, then gets waived a few days into the season, when teams already have rosters set and there is even less chance of a claim.

Rust comes back, Puustinen waived to WBS, Beauvillier to extra forward.
Lizotte comes back, the decisions get much tougher. 1 of 3 options here:
--Easy option...McGroarty goes to WBS, Beauvillier to 3LW, Lizotte as extra forward.
--Middle option...McGroarty stays, Shea to WBS, Lizotte and Beauvillier as extra forwards.
--Difficult option...McGroarty stays, defense stays with 8, Lizotte or Glass go to WBS

One thing to remember...it's easy to say "this guy sucks and makes too much money, waive him to WBS." The reality is, older players rarely get waived to the AHL, and if a team starts doing that with older players, players may avoid signing with that team. Taking a look at this team, there are some things to note when it comes to the AHL:
--Aho last played in the AHL in 19-20 season, 4 years ago
--Shea last played in the AHL...last year. Shea has far more AHL games under his belt than NHL games. He'd be the d-man likely to go down.
--Lizotte last played in the AHL in 19-20 season, 4 years ago
--Glass last played in the AHL in 21-22 season, 2 years ago. If it were down to Lizotte and Glass, I think we'd likely see Glass go to the AHL over Lizotte.

Very rarely do you see a vet player who has played the bulk of his career in the NHL get waived back down to the minors. The last Penguin player who was not a fringe player that I can remember having this done to him was Miro Satan in the 08-09 season. Due to cap reasons alone, he had to go play 10 games in the AHL that year.

Columbus has a ton of cap space due to the Gaudreau tragedy. They are currently under the cap floor but the league is going to give them a “reasonable” amount of time to get cap compliant.

Král is the only player from Czechia in the org, be it NHL, AHL or ECHL. Long odds for him to see time in the NHL.

Pettersson, Grzelcyk, Shea, Aho, Pickering.... maybe even Graves is ahead of him. And that's not counting Brunicke who will be going back to the WHL for most of the season.

So let me just posit that we do NOT need $8 million in salary populating our fourth line and since that line plays only 10 minutes a night, we would be better served trading or waiving Hayes or Glass, both of whom are paid too much for what they bring. They both can play center and perhaps are better served there with their foot speed. Trade one or the other, or waive Glass if necessary. Puustinen I think will be claimed at his salary vs production. We could also play Ponoromov or Gruden on line 4 in place of Glass and likely end up with the same results from that line

Hayes could just as easily be our 3C on this team, and produce at a 3C level. I think it's a testament to our depth this year compared to the last 2 years.

Yeah, I think they'll give guys like Hayes and Glass legit shots in the NHL before waiving them. They did get paid to take these contracts, but each has produced at a decent level in the NHL in the not-so-distant past, even if neither looked great in preseason. I'd say to give them a shot to show some production during the regular season and up their potential trade value, and if it's not looking like it's working after a couple months, then you can look at waiving them and bringing up some youngins in their place.

I'm guessing they thought Ludvig was an upgrade. Also, Poolman hasn't played in almost 2 years, concussion issues I believe.

Isles putting Engvall and his way too long contract on waivers.
