Re: Pettersson and DOC to Cancucks
The Athletic ranks Vancouver's prospect pool at 21st overall, and Fernstrom ranked 6th in that pool. He was just drafted in the 3rd round this summer. He's only 18, so he's got awhile before he makes an impact at the NHL level.
Another Sullivan vet retread in Heinen returned in the deal. Not a fan of that. Heinen is signed through next season @ 2.25M AAV
I mentioned previously that I could see Desharnais being included in the deal. He is also signed through next season @ 2M AAV
Getting the 1st (which is the 1st VAN just acquired from the Rangers) is good, but, I thought we would get a better, closer to NHL ready prospect or a Hoglander type.

At first blush, I like the return. The first round pick is key, but they pick up some serviceable players as well.
I'd say it's a win.

My friend in Vancouver doesn't like the deal. From his viewpoint, we got their 6th best prospect and a potential unprotected 2026 1st rounder for 2 pending free agents.

Fernstrom - skating not a strength and doesn't play defense. The rest don't matter since Sullivan is the coach.FLPensFan wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 12:01 amThe Athletic ranks Vancouver's prospect pool at 21st overall, and Fernstrom ranked 6th in that pool. Re: Pettersson and DOC to Cancucks
6th best prospect from a farm system that’s ranked 21st. I don’t know but it just seems like Dubas could’ve done better than that. Not sure why we have Heinen back either, but maybe it was necessary for cap reasons? The 1st rounder is def the meat of this trade for us though so that’s a solid return.

He’s a decently strong kid (who still has more room to add muscle) who can stay over pucks and power through a variety of shot types against his peers, with an excellent one-timer and a heavy wrister. He’s dangerous on the flank on his off-side on the power play but also does a really good job hiding off coverage and finding gaps to get open into in the offensive zone at five-on-five. He’s got one-on-one skill and can use it while moving. He gets to rebounds and is hungry for offense. He’s got some craft. While his skating can look hurried at times, it’s actually decent. He shades away from sticks with the puck really well. I like the way he supports, tracks and gets the puck back defensively. I like the way he protects and shields it against defenders offensively. He’s a competitor who works hard and likes to mix it up (and occasionally takes bad penalties). There’s a good shell to work with. I think he was miscast as simply a skill guy who didn’t have enough pace last year. There are some who believe he’s going to top out as an AHL/SHL playmaker but I think he’s at least got a chance of becoming a secondary middle-six offensive contributor.

Fernström’s NHL potential all hinges on whether he can improve his motor and become a better player off the puck. There’s no denying his skill, but he’ll have a limited ceiling if he doesn’t improve upon those things. If he does, it’s not crazy to think he could be a middle-six scoring winger.

The Rangers might actually meet the condition. I haven't looked at the standings in awhile and didn't realize they're having such a bad season.FLPensFan wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 12:09 amMy friend in Vancouver doesn't like the deal. Desharnais is intruiging. 6'7 225 lb RH defenseman. Seems like an eh player so wonder if he'll be moved soon. Heinen is kinda whatever but where is going to play, they have Nieto?

Re: Pettersson and DOC to Cancucks
Desharnais is big, slow, and kind of stupid. Not saying that to be mean, but, he was scratched a few times in the playoffs for Edmonton last season, and when he did play in the finals (1 game) he tried to take a cheap shot EVERY time after the whistle. Refs finally had enough and gave him a 10 minute misconduct.Daniel wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 12:24 amThe Rangers might actually meet the condition. Re: Pettersson and DOC to Cancucks
I like the trade. I hope they can add more 1st and try to get two high picks this year. Or, potential for unprotected 1st next year would certainly be great.
Trading their best defensive defenseman for a draft pick while having a crappy defense clearly demonstrates they want a top 5 pick this year. I think that is smartest strategy.

I like the trade, the 1st is good, but, what is the "Conditional" part? Is there a chance we don't get it?

We received a 1st round pick, I definitely lean towards good!

It’s a 1st either in 2025 or 2026. If the Rangers aren’t in the bottom 13 this year it’s a 2025 1st, if they aren’t it’s an unprotected 1st in 2026.pekkasteele wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 1:53 amI like the trade, the 1st is good, but, what is the "Conditional" part? Is there a chance we don't get it?

Re: Pettersson and DOC to Cancucks
I dont like the trade, but at the same time we traded away two upcoming UFAs,so Canucks take a risk for just rentals.
Heinen I actually liked years ago, but at this stage of our team, 29yrs old, 2.25M per, I dont know, not that good, signed thru next season.. next season should be all about giving as much spots to younger guys as possible. Heinen could be traded in offseason I guess for late pick..
Same for big guy Desharnais, signed thru next season at 2M per, guy who really is barely 3rd pair D, but he can PK, soo thats golden for Sully lol..
Young prospect Fernstrom is a big winger, already almost ready NHL body and still some time to develop..
Best thing is 1st rounder - are we sure its unprotected in 2026??
I just read that its protected top 13 in 2025..

It is basically 1st (Yes unprotected in -26) for MP, that is fine, the rest in the trade I don't care about. I think it is a good trade for a rental.Pens4Life wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 4:04 amI dont like the trade, but at the same time we traded away two upcoming UFAs,so Canucks take a risk for just rentals.

Re: Pettersson and DOC to Cancucks
Hard to not like the trade. The 1st round pick, which will most likely be in the teens is a solid get for MP. Also getting a decent prospect thrown in was nice.
I like getting the big physical RH D. He’ll play 3rd pairing minutes. Don’t love getting Heinen back because he will take the roster spot of a kid, assuming Heinen isn’t flipped at the deadline.
No retention was key. They still have one retention slot open.

Solid trade for MP as a rental. Cap goes up a lot next year so finding takers for depth guys on expiring deals like the two contracts we took back is a plus. Also, if we miss getting the first from NYR this year and they suck bad next year, pick could me a top 3

Rangers' pick would currently be 12th overall based on points percentage, 5 points back of WC2 spot.Daniel wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 12:24 amThe Rangers might actually meet the condition. Pens can pick twice in the 1st round this year, let's say around 4-8 with their own pick and 14-22 with the pick acquired in this trade.

Re: Pettersson and DOC to Cancucks
I guess Vancouver needed to send these guys to make room for their new acquisitions. For them, DOC is an upgrade over Heinen, who had a good start this season then faded in a very similar way to his years in Pittsburgh.Pens4Life wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 4:04 amI dont like the trade, but at the same time we traded away two upcoming UFAs,so Canucks take a risk for just rentals.

They also had no room for Desharnais even as #7-8D after acquiring Mancini and are happy to get rid of his cap hit. They now have Hornek, Myers, Mancini and Juulsen as RD options.

Getting the Rangers 1st is good, it can be protected but unless they get into the top 10 picks I’m not sure they keep it but even if they do it’s another pick next year.

Re: Pettersson and DOC to Cancucks
At first glance I was thinking meh, but diving into it a bit I would bet we get the Rangers pick somewhere in the 14-20 range this year which isn't bad return for Pettersson. DOC for two guys we can potentially flip next season for picks and a mid tier prospect isn't bad.
This is a good start if Dubas can move out Rakell for a solid package and get someone to take Karlsson

He is a free agent July 1. With the cap going up, who knows.
