This is actually a good thing because when the Pens finish with a worse record than STL, it will expose Craig Patrick as the fraud that he is even more.

Does Larry Pleau keep his job with new ownership, I doubt it.

It looks like his deal too is over at the end of this season. No reason to bring him back if I'm St. Louis.

At least we know that we will most likely be picking up another quality player again this offseason. Kessel, Toews, or Johnson.... one of those three will definately be ours.... or someone else that moves up into the top 3 rankings.

Here's what St. Louis got

In exchange, Carolina gave to the Blues three draft picks and three players. The package includes:

- Carolina's first-round pick in 2006.
- Toronto's fourth-round pick in 2006, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.
- Chicago's fourth-round pick in 2007, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.
- Tough guy forward Jesse Boulerice, a 27-year-old eighth-year pro
- Forward Mike Zigomanis, a 25-year-old fifth-year pro
- Magnus Kahnberg, 25, an unsigned Carolina draftee from Sweden who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1

2. Doug Weight was being courted by Ottawa
3. Did I mention Jim Rutherford is an idiot?

#1 picks are like gold in the new NHL and he just dumped it for an aging second line center.

I'm not so sure.

Depends on how Carolina does I guess. If they win the cup, it was a great trade. It would have been a very low 1st pick anyways.

Couple this with the Sillinger deal and this probably means the sale of the Blues is near and the current owners (Lauries) agreed to absorb the losses from the current season. Checketts probably agreed to let them gut the team and get the quickest deals possible to cut losses rather than wait it out to see what was offered at the deadline.

I would not be surprised to see Tkachuk moved in the next week to 10 days if he comes back tonight. All other vets will probably be dumped before the break as well.

Wow... St. Louis made out unbelievably well. A first round pick (regardless of the fact that it will probably be more like a second-round pick), two fourth round picks, and a few young players for a guy that they won't be able to sign next year?

St. Louis is rebuilding the right way. This is how Ottawa rebuilt.

On the surface, it looks like Carolina gave up a ton to get Weight for half a season, but of all the stuff they sent to St. Louis, what will they miss? Boulerice and Zigomanis have done very little at the NHL level despite both being in their mid to late 20s and Kahnber is another 25 year old who hasn't played a single NHL game. They sent two 4th rounders (1 in 06, 1 in 07) - not sure of the Canes' draft history, but how often do 4th rounders amount to much. That leaves the Canes #1 for 06. They will finish high, so that pick will most likely be the 25th overall or worse.

This may be a deal that helps both teams, especially if the Canes go on a tear.

I agree.

And as Bowser points out, this will definitly raise the value of Recchi.

Recchi has more goals and the same amount of points as Weight, although I think Recchi played a few more games. I can't wait to see what kind of deal we can get for him. I just hope CP doesn't mess up or Recchi forces our hand and only be interested in playing for one or two other teams.

That's all true, but do you see the Pens getting anything near that back from whoever they dump off LeClair/Recchi to?

The point is that the Blues were obviously just dumping the salary and got a halfway decent return for it. The Pens will end up having to take a 6th round pick and a bunch of dead weight for LeClair/Recchi.

No, I don't see anyone sending that much for #8 or #10, but then again, would you want it? My point was that while it looks like the Canes gave up a lot, they aren't going to miss much (if any) of that package.

The return for Weight strikes me as one of quantity, not quality.
