How much would Hayes cost if we buried him in the A? Just curious on what the cost would be to effectively just buy the second. Although for 3.5m I don't think he's the worst 3/4c choice but hardly achieving the supposed team roster construction goal.

Re: Penguins 2024 NHL Draft Thread
In a vacuum, the Hayes deal is fine. It's what we asked for. Dubas takes on a a contract/salary dump, giving up nothing, and gaining a 2nd round pick next year. He starts stockpiling picks.
The problem is, Hayes doesn't fit with the team goal "get younger," doesn't fit the team system because he's awfully slow, doesn't address lack of RH centers, and seems to create more of a logjam. Now, if they want Hayes to be the 4th, ok, maybe that is an upgrade...but Hayes isn't known for defense and doesn't PK. He averaged 15 seconds of PK a game last year with STL, and in last 3 years at PHI he average a little over 40 seconds of PK time. He's very up and down on faceoffs. Last year he took over 800 draws for STL and won 57%. The year prior, he took over 600 draws for PHI and was 49%
So, I like getting the pick next year, but unless another player is moved out, essentially Eller or Acciari, Hayes doesn't fit in the team. It's also another "we're gonna do two things at once move," with yesterday speaking about getting younger again, then acquiring a 32 year old center that may block Poulin and Ponomarev.

He would count 2.471M against the NHL cap. Burying a player saves you a maximum of 1.15M of NHL cap.Antonio wrote: Sat Jun 29, 2024 1:02 pmHow much would Hayes cost if we buried him in the A? Could Hayes be 2C and move Malkin to wing?

Not a chance. He's too slow. In 10 seasons, he's only surpassed 20 goals twice, and never surpassed 50 points. That's not 2C material.

So as of today we got this:
FA - Crosby - Rust
bunting - Geno - pusty
Doc - Hayes - Rakkell
Acari - Eller - FA
Trade Smith and land good solid winger for Sid. Debrusk

I would think Eller and or Acciari will be moved (in addition to Smith). We talk about letting the young players like Pono and Poulin get an opportunity, there's not much open if we have Eller + Acciari on the 4th line. We also have Puljujarvi as well.

I rather have Hayes than Debrusk, it will make us get a better pick position next year, and then finally FSG will let KD start the rebuild instead of this … in between zone we are in now.

Good point. I don't think it's GMKD's plan, but it will likely work out that way.pekkasteele wrote: Sat Jun 29, 2024 1:37 pmI rather have Hayes than Debrusk, it will make us get a better pick position next year, and then finally FSG will let KD start the rebuild instead of this … in between zone we are in now.

Apparently the 4th round pick is way off the board. He's not even at the draft lol.

Played for Youngstown Phantoms, his brother Logan signed with WBS too. Seems like he made the pick.
Of the goal is to take on bad contracts with picks you might want to actually use them well otherwise what’s the point?
And after posting that someone find this in 5 years when Chase Pietila is out #1 RD in a good way. Or bad way which would be funny and horrendous.

You would think that would be the type of player who after the draft you could just invite to camp on a tryout.

Really weird not to take Luke Misa with our 4th. Unless everyone knew there was a problem with him for him to fall to the late 5th round.

Thompson had no waiver exemption left, Shmid does so that makes some sense.

At least it explains this pick. We really have zero scouting through for these last two picks.
