The current pens team is a hard skating team. They are not a fast skating team.
There is a huge difference between the two. In fact, there is very little "speed" on the present roster.
And other than Neal and Kunitz what other forward on our roster would you suggest can fit in a "scoring role"?

And if by chance Crosby is so fast and Jagr so slow that Jagr cant keep up with him... then Sid outta figure out how to make it work to take advantage of the ability that he does bring to the ice.

Isn't that what truly great players do?

LOL. I swear you're ready to nominate Bylsma for sainthood, the way you take everything he says at face value.

Just that they haven't talked to JJ.
And that's if you assume he's telling the truth.

Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz. Plus Dupuis & Kennedy were also among the top goal scorers last season. I don't see the Pens wanting to downgrade the speed of their offensive units.

I have no desire to be argumentative. This whole saga seems like something manufactured for Twitter and social mediums like message boards.

Getting a healthy Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are enough to bring it back. Jagr could absolutely help, but if he doesn't buy into backchecking and playing defense no thank you.

Jagr's agent and Jagr have been doing their best to make this a story with their interviews the past few days. They've gone out of their way to attract the Pens attention. If they were having legitimate conversations Jagr & his camp wouldn't have to use the media to transmit their message to the Pens.

lets gets some things straight here about the truth... theres all kinda talkin going on between Pens and Wings and Jagr... Pens wanna get him for as cheap as possible and so do the Wings... Jagr wants the most coin, the cup, and a house free of ants... everybody is playing the waiting game until someone flinches and drops out... a game of poker for a relatively cheap skilled player who speaks of desire for the cup... just wait until July 1 and what the prices are going to be for a Kennedy, or Talbot, or Dupee... $2M to $3M easily... i.e. Colby 2010... again theres a ton of teams under the floor that are gonna overpay on garbage... funny though reading how some teams like the Canes are slowly dying and crying bout the haves and have nots under a cap system... bad sign that w/ a cap teams are bleeding red figures on the bottom line... youll see teams fold in the future... like dominos... i wonder what Sid thinks?

None of us have any idea whether the Pens have talked to or are interested in Jagr. Jagr himself and his agent say they have been in talks with the Pens and then you have Bylsma that says they have not.

I could see either one being true. And honestly I'm more inclined to believe the Pens have in fact been in some sort of contact with Jagr. Hell, if a guy like Jagr wants to talk to you why wouldn't you at least pick up the phone?

I'll take Jagr for 1 year at $3Mill over Upshall at 3 years at $9Mill...

Point is. A lot of mediocre forwards are going to get overpaid come July 1 due to the weak forward UFA pool...

I'm not expecting Jagr to sign, but I think it would be great...

The post alone, doesn't. Your history of quoting Bylsma and responding to his comments as if he's eternally under oath, however, does.

Who said anything about coach speak? I'm not saying he's avoiding the truth. I'm saying he's quite possibly flat out lying.

If that were the case, the Pens would be flat out denying the rumors for two straight days, rather than just declining comment. The Pens could put a stop to that at any turn. They've been reading the same rumors that everyone else has been reading.

I agree and disagree.

Upshall at $3M wouldn't be an extreme overpayment. I think fair value for him is about $2.5M and I bet he could be had for that. He's 27 and entering the prime years of his career. He's putting up decent numbers playing along centers who are for the most part 2nd line guys. He's big and gritty and could be a perennial 25 goal scorer along either one of Malkin or Jagr. He's definitely a Bylsma-type player.

Would I take the Jagr deal over him? Honestly, I don't know. I guess if I know what the crop of UFA wingers are for after next season I could better judge this debate. If the cap goes up again next year, guys like him are going to cost more, but at the same time, players like him aren't exactly hard to find.

Jagr is 39 years old and hasn't played in the NHL for three seasons, so while I'm confident he'd perform well, there is no guarantee that he'll be able to compete very well at that level anymore. You know what Upshall can do and that he's capable of scoring goals on a team that's not very offensively gifted. I think it's a toss-up.

A perennial 25 goal scorer entering his prime who is big and gritty gets way more than $2.5M in the NHL these days, especially in free agency. Either thinking Upshall is that good a player is wishful thinking or getting him at that salary in this pool of free agents is wishful thinking.

Correct, however he's not a 25 goal scorer yet. He's come close, but not yet. He's averaged probably about 30 to 35 points a season I'd say, which obviously does not necessarily warrant more than $3M a year, but we've all seen players of his ilk fetch that money. He's also yet to play on a team with top level centers.

I'm just saying signing him for $2.5M to $3M for two or three seasons isn't a bad investment. You know what he's good for, so at the very least his contract makes him attractive trade-wise if necessary, especially with the growing cap.

I'm also not saying he's definitely a 25 goal scorer, but I think it's a very good possibility given his performance playing without too many gifted offensive players.

Upshall only looks slightly attractive because of how bad the UFA crop is this year. No interest.

Yes and no. He's attractive due to the lack of attractive UFA wingers this year, but he's still the level of player Shero would most likely be targeting.

I wonder if other fans talk about Kennedy that way? :pop:
(I'd trade Kennedy for Upshall in a nano-second, by the way.)
