Current book being read/just finished

Awesome book, certainly one of the best from this gentleman's high school reading. The ending was kind of half assed though.

Not sure if its spoiler worthy, but seriously, the boat shows up in like the last 3 pages and thats it. kind of a lame way to end a book that built up suspense throughout.

LotF is probably in my top ten of all time. The '63 film was well done, I remember the '90 film being a big darker. Both are pretty faithful to the material if you want to give them a look to augment your reading.

Yeah, I think that he should have allowed jack to respond to the navy convoy, just to see how he interpreted what the response would be.

I need a good book or three for the trip. One of them will be Donald Miller's Masters of the Air, the source material for the supposedly in-development HBO series about the Eighth Air Force during WW2.

I've done it recently with a couple of steinbeck books, grapes of wrath and east of eden. I want to reread Clockwork Orange soon, I imagine I'll want to watch the movie again after reading.

Not the Kindle fire, I don't think you can really use that outside because of the glare. The old kindle would work, I was big on kindle reading for a period of time, I think it's especially great for exercise bike or eliptical. But otherwise I think i prefer a paper book. Except when reading a really large text, that makes a kindle worth it.

I do. I have the fold over cover though, so it's only exposed when I want it to be. The build quality is pretty high, I've spilled things onto the screen and it doesn't get in. I have a Kindle Paperwhite though.

Steinbeck lends itself well, Of Mice and Men is a good example too.
For me it was always A Perfect Storm. The movie does pretty well on its own, but since the plot is essentially identical in both the book acts as kind of a companion guide as the it delves pretty deep (punny) into the longline fishing occupation, the rescue of the sailboat, etc. One of the chapters opens with a description on what it feels like to drown and it is still one of the best passages I've read in any book.
The Rambo series was mentioned earlier in the thread, but that's a unique situation.
The Body/Stand By Me.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was good enough, I thought, but you can't hope to do that source material justice. Good effort though.

I'd rather use a book at the beach, and then you don't have to worry about sand, DRM, and so on.

I read Masters of the Air last year and enjoyed it a lot.

Finished Neptune's Inferno and I've now moved on to re-read Samuel Griffith's Battle for Guadalcanal and Joe John Custer's Through the Perilous Night.

Read Darkship Thieves by Sarah Hoyt. Good, interesting SF book. It won the 2011 Prometheus Award for libertarian science fiction. Ms. Hoyt has two more books in the series, and I'm going to add them to my queue.

Also read the Kindle-only book Natural Consequences by Elliott Kay, which is the sequel to Good Intentions. These books revolve around a main character who accidentally stumbles upon a supernatural ritual and ends up bonded to a demonic succubus and an amusingly foul-mouthed female angel. I will admit these books have so many graphic, detailed sex scenes (typically featuring the aforementioned angel and succubus) that they drift well across the line into porn territory, but at the same time the characters are interesting and funny, and the story is quite good. They would still be fun reads even without all the sex. Plus it's hard to go wrong with prices of $2.99 and $3.99.

Interesting look at e-readers and comprehension that basically says the ability to comprehend a book is about the same using Kindle v. paper, but actually putting the plot points in order is more difficult when using an e-reader. It kind of makes sense. Every time you handle a hard copy book while reading you instantly know how far you've gotten in it. Also, page numbers are more important. That's why I still buy hardback textbooks. Whereas with a Kindle your space is saved for you so needing to know your physical position in a book is almost nonexistent unless you're using the book in a citation or something. Interesting.

I can't foresee any scenario where I would read eBooks. It just doesn't work for me as a reader.

I read The Man In The White Suit (Ben 'The Stig' Collins' autobiography) using the Kindle app on my tablet. Found it a somewhat more disjointed experience than I expected. Also have the You Are Your Own Gym e-book, and found the same to be true with that.

The Godfather, LOTR (except for time), Princess Bride, Blade Runner, Apocalypse Now, Fight Club, Silence Of The Lambs

The Steven Spielberg summer fiesta would be fun, too. Jaws and Jurassic Park..... altho, if you're going to the beach maybe Jaws isn't totes apropos.

The only times I've bought physical books since getting my Kindle have been cases where the book either isn't available in electronic format (like Japanese Destroyer Captain) or I already own prior books in a series in paper and I wanted to complete the set (like the Wheel of Time series). To me the big advantage of electronic reading is space. I read a lot and I read fast. I can easily read a 300-page book in a couple hours. If I bought physical books I would either need to be constantly selling/donating them, or I would need an entire room filled with bookshelves. I have more than 200 books on my Kindle right now (and another 373 on my Kindle wish list). That would take a lot of space.

Really thinking of signing up for Kindle Unlimited. For $10 a month it's basically all-you-can-read from a pool of 600,000+ various titles. Only downside I can see is that you have access to the books only so long as you continue to pay.

From the 33 1/3 series, Gina Arnold's book on Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville. Another album I didn't pay much attention to back then, but which I came to really like. Great book, too.
