Finished Under the Dome...in 5 days (I've been traveling a lot). Fantastic book, and once again Stephen King at his best. The concept is a little terrifying.

Read The 47th Samurai By Stephen Hunter and Black Light also by Stephen Hunter. I am reading Time to Hunt also by Stephen Hunter now.

Not sure where to go once I finish my Stephen Hunter binge.

reading 'Istanbul' by pamuk. theroux went through turkey in the last book i read and it inspired me to learn more about it.

also started reading some crazy 900 page book on the russian revolution. it's really the one main culture and main idea i feel really lacking. if i finish it though, i'll really be surprised. i'm reading the conclusion now after reading the first chapter as it seems like the best way to read a book like this.

I'd say the union won the war based on resource advantages....but i think like we saw with iraq, it's a lot easier to win a war than it is to defeat an insurrection.

The part I found most comical is that often times Confederate forces would come into a Border State and they would try to assume the position as liberators that were going to rid them of their Federal oppressors. The most famous case is how Lee directed his forces to sing "Maryland, My Maryland" when they were invading Maryland in September of 1862. They were either greeted with complete apathy or total hostility.

almost finished The Immortal Game. i haven't been able to touch the other books i started since i got it.




any other chess fans? i've spent 100 times more time studying it than playing it sadly. HUGE fan of waitzkin. and also pandolfini's books.

agree to a degree. what's cool are the different stages you reach and how the way you view a game changes. not so much study is required to graduate to another "level," which, if you enjoy the reward of advancing your understanding then you can continue to like it anew and spend more time on it than you imagined you would have liked to when you were near the beginning of your experience thinking you'd never feel like putting in enough time to play it correctly. because i still feel like i have almost no idea what i'm doing and trying to grasp the idea of planning a strategy still feels like trying to map out the galaxy. but the feeling i got when i was playing a lot, after a game, reviewing the moves, i'd remember a situation as if it was a dream i'd just had. neat stuff...which i find at least as worthwhile as reading a book in general. any intellectual activity is rewarding though. just saying, studying chess can be fun even if you don't plan on being a serious player. i don't know if i'll ever play anybody but a computer.

i'd suggest studying chess tactics first and then studying end games if anyone was going to start. these are simple to grasp basics that can quickly and enormously improve someone's game. and reading waitzkin and pandolfini is easy and fun.
