Awesome book. Scarier than most horror stories (and also rather scandalous). The author of that book is in this documentary.doublem wrote:yes.Corvidae wrote:The Family That Couldn't Sleep?doublem wrote:Wait it is it, I read the book it terrified me.

And more evidence that they may play a role in noninfectious diseases, like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, keeps adding up since the books release.doublem wrote:I am assuming that you have read it then, prions are effed up.

But in that June magazine they also have an article about a virus possibly being the cause of schizophrenia. I can't find it on their site though.

Anyone see Inside the Bermuda Triangle? Most of what I saw was about "electronic fog" ,time warps, and people going from San Juan to Miami in about 3 minutes. It was good stuff.

Just watched the Steven hawking episode about aliens.
I was talking to a friend about this over the weekend...if aliens had the technology and the energy to travel enough distance to reach us, I think they would have already destroyed their own planet before that happened.
If humans had the power to harness insane amounts of energy like that, there's no question that some yahoo would be able to harness enough to destroy earth. I would imagine that any intelligent life would consist of at least 1 being who would misuse that power.

WASHINGTON — Chimpanzees wage war, mercilessly killing members of neighboring groups to expand their own territory, researchers reported Monday.

So THAT'S where we get it from. I thought Bush and Cheney were uncharacteristically evil, but they're not, this is just how GOD made us. We are genetically tuned to kill and plunder. No wonder the pleasure I received when squashing a silverfish to death earlier today. Rape on!

Exactly. we're going to wipe ourselves out long before we have technology to harness energy of that magnitude. I would apply that concept to hypothetical aliens as welldoublem wrote:Give it time, give it time.

Very interesting, indeed, maybe these are primitive instincts that humans still have. Hopefully one day science can figure out how to stop war.Sarcastic wrote:WASHINGTON — Chimpanzees wage war, mercilessly killing members of neighboring groups to expand their own territory, researchers reported Monday.

But our other close ancestor, the bonobo, is peaceful and does nothing but boink. But yeah, I was pretty surprised when I first found that out about chimps. I thought people were one of the few vertebrates that kill their own species regularly, but I guess it makes sense that our closest relative is brutal and insane. We are believed to be somewhere between the two species, aggression wise though.doublem wrote:Very interesting, indeed, maybe these are primitive instincts that humans still have. I wish there were a better way to tell what specific genes do. From what I know, they need to modify an animal to lack a gene (or add the gene to the animal), then study what exactly it does to it physically. That's a painstakingly long processes. We have the whole human genome mapped out with no clue what most of it means. (but 40% of it may be virusesdoublem wrote:Ten years after the reading of the human genome, humanity is about to confront its true nature.

Cool article of school kids using NASA photos of Mars
http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20100621/ ... caveonmars
A group of seventh-graders in California has discovered a mysterious cave on Mars as part of a research project to study images taken by a NASA spacecraft orbiting the red planet.
The 16 students from teacher Dennis Mitchell's 7th-grade science class at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., found what looks to be a Martian skylight — a hole in the roof of a cave on Mars.

Re: LGP Science Thread
If we have any amateur astronomers here, me and a couple of friends from Detroit go to the Black Forest Star Party in September at Cherry Springs State Park. Cherry Springs is about a 3.5 hour drive if you take 80 and fly down back-roads like I do. It's $30 to register, $20 if you register a family of 3. We're usually the only ones representing Pittsburgh & Detroit, but there are people from all over the country and Canada that come down to it. You can either camp out on the field overnight, or just do a day trip. We usually camp, you're allowed to camp next to your car, so we have an adapter for power outlets, etc.
There's more information here, http://www.bfsp.org/starparty/index.cfm ... N=45591138" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I'd suggest registering now, cause it fills up very quick.
I use a Celestron Nexstar 114, a CCD camera, and guidance software on my laptop. It's a lot of fun. Let me know if anyone's interested, and we can try and meet up.
