Re: 2014-2015 Pirates Offseason Thread
My take on this is that Huntington said here's the offer we are comfortable making, it's a reasonable offer, let's see if it works. A couple other teams decided that they were comfortable giving more. It wasn't a lowball offer. It wouldn't have been completely absurd to think that no other team would offer a 31 year old a 4-5 year offer.

I'll miss Russell Martin. He helped give me back my team. Godspeed, Russ. Don't spend it all in one place.

if he still has that curveball he'll be a nice upgrade over Jeanmar in the bullpen.

Guessing we won that trade. Not a bad flier at this point, if he recaptures his form he can be a really useful bullpen piece, if not it's always nice to have AAA depth.Crankshaft wrote:Pirates re-sign Brad Lincoln

"Hey Dan, it's Bob. You got a minute?"
"Sure. I just got done talking to Obama. Look, Seven Springs is great but I've told you I'm not int-"
"No, it's not that. The Pirates have a lot of holes to fill this year and it is tough for us to land free agents. Any suggestions?"
"Bob, let me introduce you to the Yinzer Appeasement Protocol. Just find former players who at least ten fans think shouldn't have left in the first place. Then find someone who grew up in the area."
"Sounds brilliant."
"It is genius. Just make sure to only give them one-year deals. I forgot to mention that to Mario and he gave Scuderi a four-year deal. Silly Canadians need everything spelled out."
"Important safety tip. Thanks for the help, Dan."
"No problem. Say, how is your health insurance? Have you considered-"
"Sorry, gotta run."

Martins contract breakdown is 7-15-20-20-20... yikes they won't even be able to unload him at the end of that when hes all worshed up
Also Travis sawchik reported that the pirates did offer 4 years. No numbers but it was "a competitive offer"

Re: 2014-2015 Pirates Offseason Thread
I would not want any parts of that for my team BUT he is coming off of a pretty good year and isn't the worst option as a LOOGY. He probably only needs to be worth 3 wins over the next 3 years to make this deal worthwhile.Troy Loney wrote:zach duke got a three year contract. that's some impressive front office idiocy.

Yawn. But keep telling yourself the Rooneys are terrible owners and Mario is a schmuck for canning a coach you despised since forever because he fired him in the manner that you didn't approve of when we all know none of that isn't true.

Listening to ESPN very early this morning. Guest was a Spanish guy that writes for USA today. He said Toronto knew they were overpaying Russ by quite a bit. But their top priority was solidifying their clubhouse. They wanted a leader. Their need for a C played a part but was secondary.
He was also plugging an upcoming article about the next wave of Cubans that will be signed. Should be an interesting read.

Baseball Prospectus lists top 10 Pirate prospects today.
Very high on Reese McGuire and Mitch Keller. I'm not sure if they're real low on Meadows, or if they just really high on the other guys. Probably just lower on him than other outlets, but recognize he's a stud prospect.RHP Tyler Glasnow
RHP Jameson Taillon
OF/1B Josh Bell
C Reese McGuire
RHP Nick Kingham
RHP Mitch Keller
OF Austin Meadows
INF Alen Hanson
SS Cole Tucker
OF Harold Ramirez

Prospect lists are of the flavor of the month variety for sure. But I'd say Bell's reestablishment as a top prospect is based on what he did in Bradenton. Even when healthy in WV he wasn't producing like he did last year in High A.

I believe that's the plan. He's been playing there in the Arizona Fall League.columbia wrote:Is Bell moving to 1B full time?
