Re: Stock Market
Yes, they track it, but it is not looked at as much. If you read the link I posted, it says a little bit about it. First time filers represents more of current businesses consensus of the market. If stock prices go down and your company loses a lot of value - are you going to be eager about spending more money and hiring new people or are you going to try to cut costs, save money, and fire people? The trend continuing down shows that, in the volatile market, businesses may be waiting it out instead of downsizing.thehockeyguru wrote:I can see the trend they are looking at with this metric, but do they also track the total number of people receiving assistance and the total number of people who have reached their assistance limit?

"The US Labor Department separately reported on Thursday that initial jobless claims fell last week for the third week running, but barely half of the nearly 14 million people unemployed were drawing unemployment benefits."

Re: Stock Market
So in a nut shell you have 25.1 million people who are unemployed or are working in a reduced capacity (which I believe is closer to 15%). 13.9 million unemployed, 8.4 million who are looking for full-time work but can't find it so they are working part-time, and you have 2.8 million who are unemployed but don't count because they've been out of work for over a year.
The number of unemployed persons (13.9 million) and the unemployment rate (9.1 percent) changed little in July.
The number of persons unemployed for less than 5 weeks declined by 387,000 in July, mostly offsetting an increase in the prior month. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over), at 6.2 million, changed little over the month and accounted for 44.4 percent of the unemployed.
The civilian labor force participation rate edged down in July to 63.9 percent
The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) was about unchanged in July at 8.4 million. These individuals were working part time because their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job.
In July, 2.8 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force, little changed from a year earlier. (These data are not seasonally adjusted.) These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey.

Re: Stock Market
And so it goes...
Given the manic nature of the market and the way central banks love to announce large serious events on weekends, this would be a good time to take profits (here before the close) I'm expecting a bit of a selloff tomorrow as folks move to cash ahead of the upcoming weekend.

Re: Stock Market
You can thank a certain administration for dropping those individuals out of the unemployment numbers once they have run out of "unemployment" benefits. Never mind they are then typically shifted to the "wellfare" system.ExPatriatePen wrote:Yes and unbelievably, NO ( or at least I've never seen that number and I've looked high and low for it)thehockeyguru wrote:I can see the trend they are looking at with this metric, but do they also track the total number of people receiving assistance and the total number of people who have reached their assistance limit?

Hey...a relatively normal day for stocks so far today. DJI +150
Heard the other day that that was the first time in history Dow had 4 days in a row with a 400+ range.

Re: Stock Market
kenny the kangaroo missed out on two hopeful buys: CSX at 20 and DGZ (An etn that shorts gold) at 11.00
. then again, it wouldnt be such a bad thing if this market just calmed down and went back to normal.

Great debate on CNBC right now between SImon and Cramer on Melissa Lees show about how bad this current round of fear is.
Very entertaining and informative even if you don't like the participants.
