Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
My buddy is hardcore paleo (well, probably about 90%), as are most of XFit pals. He has loaned that book to me in the past, and while I don't completely disagree with the philosophy I do tend to think it's too extreme to be practical. For example, they advocate the near-complete expulsion of grains and dairy from your diet.... which can lead to serious Vitamin B and calcium deficiencies. I've also heard that eating a diet so rich in animal proteins can make you a bit........ how to say this...... 'overly regular' in your, erm, output.Godric wrote:Tif, I know you would absolutely love the books I just listed
When my bud was first starting out on paleo he mentioned that humans are the only animal in the world that consumes the milk of another species. I didn't question the veracity of this, but simply pointed out that humans are the only animal in the world with the capcity to harvest the milk from another species for its own consumption.

I'll check out the others tho, thanks for the share.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I added in a complex I saw on CrossFit to my workout today. Bear Complex - 5 rounds of 7 sets in 15:30. I did really really bad. My technique was terrible since my grip and legs were shot from the previous day's workout. My shoulders were also behaving very inflexibly and put a lot of strain on my wrists (even with light weight). Gonna keep at these though and get better. Complexes are such a great way to end a workout.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Tifosi,
I had a very similar shoulder injury a few weeks ago. It was the same exact thing I did 6 years ago to the other shoulder. Mine was a partial separation that caused some ligament damage. Nothing major and it's about 90% better 3 weeks since the injury. I'd say a doctor visit is worth it if you have insurance. Just to be safe.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I can't run for any length of time without getting bored to death. 10 minutes on a treadmill or one mile on a track outside is just about it for me.
I swear by intervals. In the past I have lost 8-10lbs over the course of a few weeks with intervals +lifting alone. No diet changes. I lift all the time but only ramp up cardio/intervals when I have to.
I run on the street, up a hill/slope for 30 seconds. Full sprint. I then half walk/half light jog back to the "starting line" for 60 seconds. Then back up the hill full sprint for 30 seconds. Do this for 10-12 minutes and you're dead. For me, this works 100x better than running on the treadmill for 45 minutes. Another bonus to doing intervals is you continue to sweat and get your heart rate pumping for a pretty significant amout of time after your run. The stop ang go tricks your body onto working even after you're done.
I feel like not enough people do this because it seems like you're not doing cardio long enough so it can't be sufficient. But it is. Outside is best because u can really sprint but you can do this inside as well. I put the treadmill on a 2.0 slope, sprint at 11.0 and jog/walk at 3.0. Worth a try for 2 weeks for anybody that despises long cardio like I do.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
As far as supplements go, I've taken all kinds of creatine, protein powder, combos, energy stuff, etc... and one thing I've really been taking religiously lately is Jack3D. It's a pre-workout powder u drink that gets you jacked up before you lift. Sitting in school or at work all day and then going over to the gym, sometimes u don't have the energy. This guarantees you a GREAT workout each and every time. Curious if anyone else uses it. I almost can't lift without it.
Example: Jack3d probably adds 30lbs+ or so to my bench when I take it. It also allows u to lift for as long as u want without ever feeling "done". Can be a good or bad thing.
Just heard the other day that it's the number 1 selling supplement on US Army bases. Also found out that it was just recently banned by the NCAA for some reason.

I just put on music and run. I usually run about 2 and a half miles, i think i'm going to up it to 3 and play this song on repeat, trying to finish each lap within one play.

Distance running burns almost as much muscle as it does body fat. Sprinting on the other hand uses PCr hydrolysis and anaerobic glycolysis energy systems and burns 9 times more body fat on an equal calorie ratio comparison to endurance training. Just look at the average body composition of sprinters vs distance runners. Additionally, sprinting develops your VO2 max faster than endurance training. http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_art ... f_fat_lossRylan wrote:Its a different type of cardio. This provides a little insight into it, but it is just one site's semi-bias opinion: http://www.oneresult.com/blog/jack3d/wh ... y-kill-youThe U wrote:As far as supplements go, I've taken all kinds of creatine, protein powder, combos, energy stuff, etc... and one thing I've really been taking religiously lately is Jack3D. I don't know much about the supplement but most reports say taking it is fine as long as you don't go overboard, which could cause some problems.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
My XFit bud swears by Jack3D, and got another co-worker turned on to the stuff. I tried it once and did not like the way my body responded to it, so I use a different pre-workout formula called Accelerade. It works in largely the same way, but it doesn't make my heart go all racey racey. The U wrote:As far as supplements go, I've taken all kinds of creatine, protein powder, combos, energy stuff, etc... and one thing I've really been taking religiously lately is Jack3D. Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I just can never get into the gym scene, i always get my best results from working out at home. Granted i am not super big so my limited equipment works for me, the concentration level and limited distractions help me alot also. Got most my equipment from craigslist for basicly nothing. Most of my routines are cardio on a stationary, HITT type, and a few days of upper and lower body workouts.
Creatine was my biggest suppulment, i don't know what it was but i ballooned when i was on that stuff. It makes you look bigger bust once you stop taking it, you lose it all.
For anyone thinking of working out, once you get some gains and lose some weight the difference you see in your self is admazing. And i am not talking about look wise. Your confidence just grows and you feel great about your self. One of the best decisions i ever made was working out and getting fit.

Interesting. I've been doing it all wrong. I diet and run but from this it looks like diet and lift looses more weight.steelhammer wrote:Distance running burns almost as much muscle as it does body fat. Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Look up H.I.T.T. workouts (sprinting workouts). This is much better than endurance type workouts for fat loss. When i started working out i didn't even realize i was doing it, then once i read more about it I realized my jog to a stop sign, run to a stop sign workout were in fact these HITT workouts. Was great for fat loss, i averaged 2 lbs a week of fat loss.bh wrote:Interesting. I've been doing it all wrong. Depends on your end goal I assume? I agree there is a major difference, just saying based on my training regimes for soccer they were both equally useful for me. I know when my coaches changed my workouts to more sprinter style my overall stamina decreased. As did my speed, but my strength increased, coincidence or result?steelhammer wrote:Distance running burns almost as much muscle as it does body fat. Also, today was the first time in a very long time where I physically had to end a workout early brought on by nausea. Probably brought about by improper breathing. Just an overall let down.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I've been debating for a while in regard to getting some additional workout equipment at home. The majority of my workouts are at a gym and I would gauge my fitness level as above average. As of right now, I have a treadmill, some light dumbells, and a pull up bar. I can get a pretty decent workout with what I have now, but would like to add something to give me more of a range of workout options. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a TRX Suspension Trainer. I've read/heard some good things. Anyone ever train using a TRX Suspensiom Trainer? Any insight would be great.
