Old post, but the vpn services purge their logs almost immediately so there is no user IP address to match.pittsoccer33 wrote:Can you explain how that works? I think of myself as being kind of computer savvy and I don't get it.knives of ice wrote:a vpn also covers you for torrents, anonymity, security, it can even get you around netflix throttling if your isp does that.
If you subscribe to a VPN I assume you're paying with a credit card. So how is anything you're doing anonymous? There has to be a trail of data back to your VPN account.

Roku just added FXNow so chanels, some with live content, you can now access with the email account of a cable subscription include:
HBO
Showtime
A&E
History
Lifetime
FX, inlcuidng Simpsons World
Disney
Disney Junior
Disney XD
Just need AMC, USA and for CBS to either get with the program in Hulu+ or make their streaming service available and I'd be all set.

Radio Shack has Roku stick for $30 with email signup today. Half tempted to get one to replace my PS3. Hate having to remember to charge the controller. I guess I could just buy a PS3 remote.

I'd love if the Watch Comcast app would go to Roku.DelPen wrote:Roku just added FXNow so chanels, some with live content, you can now access with the email account of a cable subscription include:

Comcast is extremely anti-Roku (and Fire TV for that matter). They won't authenticate for apps like HBO Go and I think the reason is that they view Roku owners as a threat.

Why does the FXnow app not support dish network customers?

Ah, so my plan of talking my mother in law into getting HBO so we can watch HBO GO won't work (unless we use PS3?)pittsoccer33 wrote:Comcast is extremely anti-Roku (and Fire TV for that matter). My PS3. I have an LG BD Player that has Netflix on it, but the damn thing skips. Rage inducing stuff there. I bought a second PS3 for the bedroom for my streaming services because of it.pittsoccer33 wrote:I'm curious what everyone uses to access Netflix (or Prime, Hulu, etc).
In my den I'm mostly using my Xbox One now, in the bedroom it's a Google TV

I know a few of you have discussed using Hola and VPNs to watch Netflix. Beware:
http://torrentfreak.com/netflix-cracks- ... es-150103/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Netflix is starting to block subscribers who access its service using VPN services and other tools that bypass geolocation restrictions. The changes, which may also affect legitimate users, have been requested by the movie studios who want full control over what people can see in their respective countries.

Netflix should tread lightly. Either please the studios, or the folks paying your subscription fees. It's a pretty small demographic doing it (I assume) so it should be pretty easy to sweep it under the rug.

this is one of the major problems that sucks with these streaming services. i had the same thing with directv and watch espn for years but i guess that contract was finally renewed and we'll have it shortly.

Re: Seeking opinions on streaming services.
I wondered when Netflix would stop this "feature."
On a related note, I tried to stream Netflix from one of our Kindle Fires to our TV. I know I've done it before, but it appears that Amazon has blocked that feature around the time the Fire stick came out. The cast icon is there, but it says that my Netflix app isn't up to date or Android isn't up to date. Both are the latest builds available through Amazon. What shenanigans.

Re: Seeking opinions on streaming services.
Netflix strikes different deals in differnet countries. So something that doesnt export well to another country (like comedy) might be available there to watch instantly far before it ever is here.
So by switching your IP address to appear to connect from Germany or Mexico would allow you to watch things that you aren't "allowed" to. Ditto goes for someone in a country that Netflix isn't available in - appear to connect from another country.

Re: Seeking opinions on streaming services.
I recently added PlayOn to my configuration. For $50, I extended the life of my Google TV (Sony Blu-ray... still on Android 3.1) a few years. I also ditched the DVR in favor of being able to pick up last nights shows directly from NBC, CBS, ABC, and a host of cable channels, including AMC.
It was on sale when I got it... as I get a little deeper with it, I'l post some updates.

Do you use Plex? I believe that bluray player was one of the few GTV boxes that supported DTS-MA bitstreaming. It would make a great digital movie player with Plex.Pitt87 wrote:For $50, I extended the life of my Google TV (Sony Blu-ray... still on Android 3.1) a few years.

Re: Seeking opinions on streaming services.
Look forward to hearing about this. Do you have to run it through your pc then to google tv, roku, etc? I wasn't quite sure how that worked. I almost bought it over break, but read some reviews about the bad video quality.Pitt87 wrote:I recently added PlayOn to my configuration. Internet TV from Dish, has ESPN, ESPN2, CNN, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Travel Channel, Food Network, ABC Family, HGTV, and Disney Channel for $20 a month. Includes live and On-Demand. Now only if AMC were included I'd ditch my cable and just get internt with this which will be on Roku and Fire TV. Extra $5 gets you more channels in a couple add-on packages too.

That sounds great (Sling TV), except I have every device OTHER than what will work at launch: Chromecast, Sony Bluray, PS4.
I guess I could (Chrome)cast the Sling TV tab via PC?
