That work ethic part was key. I know it's a TV show and they selectively edit stuff and whatnot, but when Hard Knocks featured the Cowboys a few years ago that was the most fascinating part for me. Seeing a guy I had always thought of as a complete tool show every day and just work. He may have had a laugh off the field, but he was an absolute professional in the way he approached his preparation for the game.shafnutz05 wrote:Unlike a lot of other receivers with obnoxious personalities or egos, Terrell Owens had unquestionable work ethic and production.

Re: NFL
People that spin the ball as their td celebration should be penalized for being lame and 15 yard penalties for TD celebrations aren't uncommon, so i don't understand what the change is. Things like "sack celebrations" are what was specifically cited in the article, so I assumed that td celebrations were not the focus.

Re: NFL
I just mentioned to PFinDC on Facebook about this. This is a terrible idea.
(copying and pasting from response)
If you kick, punch, move the ball after the celebration, you lose a down.
If your sack dance is excessive and/or takes forever to complete, the down is replayed.

Now with that said, there are a few good points mentioned in here. If you walk 15 yards down field to celebrate a first down (yes, this means you AB), you should lose a down. I would have no problem with that. There's a line between creativity, a spontaneous celebration, and something so pre-planned that it deserves every dollar of a fine. But they're planning on fining stuff like spinning the ball and the salute, both which have been around since at least the early 70s?

Goodell has plenty of problems on his hands: declining attendance since 2007, increasing number of injuries, not to mention the reputation in general of those playing in the league. I think he should take a look at the bigger picture instead of being worried about celebrations and uniform violations (another thing he has been guilty of during his tenure.)

Antonio Brown is exactly what I was thinking of in my post. I don't have a problem with most sack celebrations, but to be fair, they're basically the same as the first down ones, so they should be included.

Re: NFL
Yes with the one note being that sacks are far less common than first downs (except for the Steelers since Ben has been QB) and should be much more exciting. I'm all for anything that penalizes these sad celebrations for meaningless accomplishments. Way to convert that 2nd and 1 into a first down with a 2 yard gain now can you please run the 20 yards that you took to signal first down back to the huddle you moron (holy run-on sentence Batman). TD celebrations should be allowed with no restrictions except props. Let them break dance for all I care, they did something meaningful in the game. I'm actually upset that team celebrations like the bob 'n weave that the Rams used to do aren't allowed. Those were actually cool.Idoit40fans wrote:Antonio Brown is exactly what I was thinking of in my post. I hate non-scoring celebrations and even touchdown celebrations (to an extent) are a little over the top.
Congrats for doing what you're paid to do. I don't do a jig every time I complete a tax return.

Eh the TD celebrations are OK by me, its the other pedestrian celebrations that get to me. Remember that they are paid to entertain us so its a little different than an accountant. If my accountant got me more money than I was expecting then I may do a jig with him.Beveridge wrote:Brown is who I thought of too in your first post before reading further.Idoit40fans wrote:Antonio Brown is exactly what I was thinking of in my post. Because the player dropping the ball and spinning really interferes with something as scientific as an old guy running at a spot at a 45 degree angle to "spot" the ball.Kaizer wrote:the refs are trying to spot the damn ball, leave it on the ground.

Yeah, that's my question. Who is served by these rules. I hate when my players celebrate stupids stuff, but I hate more when 15 freaking yard penalties (for something that has no effect on the game) greatly affect the game!canaan wrote:do people really get upset at post-play celebrations? suck it up, ya thin-skinned nancies.

Re: NFL
I've just always been a fan of "Act like you've been there before and you'll be there again." Spiking the ball is fine with me. No problem there. The bigger the play, the bigger the celebration IMO. What I can't stand are the 30 second choreographed dance routines for a 6 yard 1st down catch on 2nd and 4. Did you run the ball in from the 1 to go up 7-0 11:45 in the 1Q? What the hell are you dancing for? Did you make a 35 yard catch to go up by 3 with :11 left in the 4Q? Dance away my friend....

When someone runs 5-10 yards down field with the ball, it definitely takes time from getting the ball spotted and getting to the next play. Thats why its annoying.TheHammer24 wrote:Because the player dropping the ball and spinning really interferes with something as scientific as an old guy running at a spot at a 45 degree angle to "spot" the ball.Kaizer wrote:the refs are trying to spot the damn ball, leave it on the ground.

Re: NFL
Short answer with no gray area: yescanaan wrote:do people really get upset at post-play celebrations? suck it up, ya thin-skinned nancies.
Long answer: it really depends on the situation. If it's a RB who busts off a 50 yard run in the 4th with less than a minute left putting them in FG range when they are down 2, I have no problem with them celebrating. That's a game changer. Quarterback gets sacked, loses 15 yards? I think they earned a reasonable celebration. When some 4th string jabroni runs for 3 yards in a 28-3 blowout and celebrates as if he scored a game-winning TD in a Super Bowl with some running down the field, flexing, pointing to the crowd, and then moar flexing towards the D, it gets a bit tiresome. LOL, and people wonder why games take almost 3.5 hours.
As odd as it sounds, I don't mind the touchdown celebrations as long as it's within reason. There's nothing wrong with the simple stuff and I'm surprisingly even flexible with -some-creativity. Ocho's putt with the pylon, while it's not something I want to see every week, I can't lie... I laughed at it.
So TD celebrations: keep them short and to the point. I'll even concede the creativity.
sack dance: keep it within reason. There's a difference between taking a QB down for a loss under a yard and knocking them out of first down or FG range
first down strut: you better have just changed the game. otherwise ain't nobody got time for that.

That whole sequence was fantastic.Idoit40fans wrote:Maybe they shouldn't penalize them, they just shouldn't penalize the opposition if they Teague-on-TO them during the celebration.
I like celebrations, but they are over-saturated now. What JS said is pretty much spot on with my feelings.
