OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, good list idea Shad. I am wondering who should be one on that list. I think Cook has to go first since Pomplamoose has generally disappeared from the airwaves as they make their slow descent into homelessness. Unless I find them on a street corner on the Lower East Side in December 2030, it is unlikely they will be foughten* by me.shafnutz05 wrote:List of people Slappy wants to fight:

The lower east side is now an extremely high rent district, so you probably won't run into yen there.

I lived on the lower east side bordering alphabet city, and there was nothing high rent about it. Parts of it are certainly gentirfied, but you can still find plenty of classically disgusting NYC in the LES.columbia wrote:The lower east side is now an extremely high rent district, so you probably won't run into yen there.

Re: Ron Cook: Ugh
I'll explain the one-sentence paragraph quite easily. Most writers are trained to write for a column-oriented layout within a newspaper. Such a layout often leads columns to be two inches wide, making short paragraphs seem long and long paragraphs seem unending. The idea to use one sentence paragraphs are used for two reasons. One, for effect. Two, because the sentence is long and adding another would make the paragraph even longer.columbia wrote:I've seen the one setence paragraph style creep into local sports blogs.

When writing for a newspaper, the goal is to dumb-down the story to an eighth grade level. One way to do so is to avoid long paragraphs, which tend to be overwhelming to readers. Keep them short and the reader is encouraged to read on. Make them long, and the reader is likely to move to a new story. In general, you'll rarely find a paragraph longer than three to four sentences in a newspaper.
I suspect the one sentence paragraph in blogs tends to be more prevalent in those trained in the school of print journalism, as opposed to those trained in a traditional English writing school -- or simply educated (or not) in another field. If done properly, I actually enjoy the one sentence paragraph, as it often helps a story flow, and, in some cases, causes the reader to pause to understand the emphasis.
I use the technique at FF quite often because of my background in journalism and because the width of our site was rather narrow. Now that we've widened the site, I'll likely use fewer one sentence paragraphs.

I've lived in NYC twice and that neighborhood has radically changed.

Maybe Ron Cook can predict that the Pens will miss the playoffs, so they can win the Cup again this year
Back then (February 2009) I specifically called him out - on this site and over the air (Madden's show). I wanted him to pay me a year's salary if they made the playoffs, and I was prepared to offer the same to him if the Pens missed the playoffs. But he never responded.
And, of course, the Pens won the Cup.

Your description of the man couldn't be further from reality. He's actually a ridiculously nice guy, and he's generally upbeat and positive.

Did he say that before the Pens added two top line wingers, fired the coach, and installed a new system?

From what I understand, the editors breakup the articles and push the one-sentence paragraphs. Ron would typically go for four of them. His editor wants more.

I do, as well. He's somewhat negative, but moreso, I think he's a realist. People tend to hate anyone who is anything less than an optimist who wears black and gold glasses. Cook tends to tell it like it is, even if it goes against the common thought in Pittsburgh.SolidSnake wrote:I like Cook toonewarenanow wrote:I think I'm one of the few that like Cook.
