Concussion from a shot, not from Zdeno Chara, with your goalie mask on?
Maybe the league needs to look into the safety of these masks?

It's just like any other helmet. They are there to protect against serious injuries like skull fractures. There is no helmet that can protect against the mechanism of a concussive injury.KG wrote:Concussion from a shot, not from Zdeno Chara, with your goalie mask on?

Re: Penguins 2017-2018 Injury Thread
I never post here, just lurk, but my issue is taking slap-shots in practice. My son is a Pee-Wee Goalie and has has 2 concussions this season (5 months apart). The last one, 4 weeks ago, was from a 70 mph slap-shot straight to the mask. He doesn't remember the 10 minutes prior to the shot (it occurred late in the 2nd period), but was feeling much better than what he experienced during the 1st concussion (blow to the back of the head). He is still experiencing headaches when he skates (he is fine in every other area of life) and is seeing a specialist this week for cranial massages and work. Head injuries are tricky, and they take them so serious now that MM could miss significant time. MAF missed almost 2 months earlier this year with his concussion. I don't think this classifies as an "Injury Prone" injury, as it was just unlucky. My biggest issue is taking slap-shots in practice...this should not happen in shooting drills when the goalie cannot get reset. This is entirely on the coaching staff. Would you tackle an NFL QB in practice as hard as you can, absolutely not. Bottom line is if this happens in a game, it sucks, but in practice this could have been prevented.

Yeah, you can get the top of the line custom helmet with Maltese Gel and you still are going to get a concussion from a Slap-shot straight to the mask, along with whiplash.Henry Hank wrote:It's just like any other helmet. If anything, the last two years have shown that the key to winning the Cup is to go into the playoffs with your starting goalie injured.Southern Fan wrote:Won’t have to worry about a worn out goalie in April

If you look at the Penguins' recent past, their medical staff errs on the side of caution and just diagnoses anything resembling concussion symptoms as a concussion. It's the most appropriate thing to do, but I'm also not entirely sold on all of them. I think Crosby's concussion during the playoffs last year is a great example - given his reaction to concussions in the past (fractured vertebrae from the Steckel hit notwithstanding), there's no way he comes back so soon. False diagnoses is inherently normal with maladies or injuries that are so fickle. It won't surprise me if Murray is back in a week.

That's generally the standard of care. There's no test that confirms a concussion. You have a mechanism for injury and symptoms suggestive of it, and you treat it like it's a concussion. He could have a concussion and be back within a week if the symptoms are minimal.wondermoose wrote:If you look at the Penguins' recent past, their medical staff errs on the side of caution and just diagnoses anything resembling concussion symptoms as a concussion. I don't think the Crosby example holds up. There's no way to predict how severe or how long the symptoms are going to last. It's possible to have a concussion with a prolonged recovery and then have another with a short recovery. There also are commonly complicating factors like in Sid's case there apparently was a component of a neck injury (I don't think fractured vertebrae but more likely muscle strain) that can mimic and continue to drive symptoms. And finally I think it's a pretty good likelihood that Sid was not "completely recovered" before he returned in the playoffs last year. If that happened in the regular season, I doubt he would have only missed a game.

From what I am reading, Sullivan specifically said Murray has a concussion, and also specifically said he does not have "concussion-like symptoms"....he has a concussion.Henry Hank wrote:That's generally the standard of care. Sounds a bit more of the serious variety to me.

So I assume we'll see DeSmith tonight. These next few games are pretty important. Hope he's up to the challenge.

There's really no difference. A concussion is a concussion. Using a term like "concussion-like symptoms" would make me think they just don't want to call it a concussion, usually for the reasons that calling it a concussion entails (e.g. the expectation that you need to go through the full protocol). From what I am reading, Sullivan specifically said Murray has a concussion, and also specifically said he does not have "concussion-like symptoms"....he has a concussion.

Yeah, I get that. I think that skipping the fact that he has concussion like symptoms and going straight to he has a concussion is telling though. Not a, well, he has some symptoms and we need to wait and see.Henry Hank wrote:There's really no difference. A concussion is a concussion. For what it's worth, I think it was McKenzie that was semi-applauding the Penguins for their straight forwardness on concussions. Saying most teams just stick to UBI and LBI, which the Penguins use as well, but they appear to be ahead of the curve when announcing players have concussions and not lumping it into the UBI category.

Agreed. Sheary also came back within a week during the same time in the playoffs, so I doubt they were concussed at all both of them. Either that or Sid played through concussion - because he was not as dominant after the Niskanen hit as before.wondermoose wrote:If you look at the Penguins' recent past, their medical staff errs on the side of caution and just diagnoses anything resembling concussion symptoms as a concussion. I am concerned about Murray though, he is so young, I hope his play wont be affected in the long term by concussions.
Murray was just getting in to top form, the guy cant catch a break

Per Mike Sullivan, Aston-Reese was not a healthy scratch last night. He got hurt yesterday in practice, and is out "longer term" with an upper body injury. Maybe Olli's slapshot deflected off Murray's head and took out ZAR too.
With Sheary playing like crap, I think it may be time to #ReleaseTheKracken.....I mean #FreeSprongAgain

Maybe we need to stop making splashes close to the deadline........
2008: Hossa hurt the fist game he plays with us.
2013: Crosby breaks his jaw first game with Iginla in the lineup
2018: Murray, probably Kessel, and ZAR hurt since Brassard acquired....

Who got hurt playing wiffle ball/home run derby in practice during the Blysmagic years? Was it Neal?

Re: Penguins 2017-2018 Injury Thread
You do the trades when the players are available. Many "sellers" don't know that they are going to be sellers until closer to the deadline. And others want to wait to sell until more teams are involved and push up the price. Why sell in December when you could probably get 50% more at the deadline?mnpensfan wrote:Maybe we need to stop making splashes close to the deadline........

But Rutherford will move early if given the chance ("bigger" names only):
Hornqvist - June
Kessel - July
Bonino - July
Daley - December
Perron - January (even though it failed)
Hagelin - January
Near deadline:
Schultz - February
Hainsey - February
Brassard - February
