Kanye definitely did bring the show to a screeching halt. I'm not a fan but I think Miley did a great job on 50 ways. The Californians was bizarre. How did they think that skit belonged in a regular show let alone the 40th anniversary show is beyond me. Just re-watched the Jeopardy sketch, it was funnier the 2nd time aroundcount2infinity wrote:there was a clip of it.eddysnake wrote:Did they show the chippendales sketch? It doesn't get much better than that for me. I always enjoyed watching other people trying to keep a straight face when Farley was on.
That was definitely the highlight for me as well... The Californians sketch killed the entire thing, and then I got back into it and Kanye performed and killed it again.skullman80 wrote:Celebrity Jeopardy was the highlight and that happened pretty early on.

yeah, but my question would be if he would agree to it. he and the show didn't part ways on great terms, IIRC.count2infinity wrote:Of course... they'd have been idiots to not put him on it.Eismann wrote:Was Norm Macdonald on it?
so is the premise of the californians skit just a bunch of vapid people making references to local land marks?

If they were going to include musical guest I wish they would have included a hard rock one also. Maybe the Foos of something with Grohl since he has been on so many times. (9-10 times total I think)

I caught pieces of the show last night. From what I saw, they did a fantastic job. I'm going to watch the rest tonight.

The Californians - see... see how funny this recent cast was with making faces and speaking gibberish?
Honestly - that sketch should have been one and done the first time around - where they just argued in valley girl voices about how to drive around LA. Leave it at that, and be done with it.
Instead it turns into a reoccurring sketch that ends up on the 40th anniversary show - and it looks downright stupid after a celebrity jeopardy.
You want to know why ratings continue to slip - that crap is exactly why... and last night - there was a clear difference in funny between the two skits.

i didnt think that californians skit started off bad, but by the time t-swift was on-screen, i was hoping that it would just end. that was some post-12:30 tracy morgan cast era crap.

I thought the best bit of the night was Bill Murray doing "the love theme from Jaws." Mr. Now Serious Actor Oscar Nominee really nailed it IMO.
Agree with everyone about the horrible Californians sketch, but for me the low-point was the Eddie Murphy thing. Chris Rock genuflects at length about Murphy's sublime legacy, then the guy comes out, says a few pointless words, and is never seen again. Bleh.

What a long way to go for a few classic skits. Trim it back to an hour, slap it on DVD, and sell it on VH1.

I thought it was fine. Honestly, this is probably the last big anniversary where a lot of the originals/early cast will still be alive. I think Chase, Akroyd, Murray, Martin, Michaels and them will be dead by the 50th anniversary.BigMcK wrote:What a long way to go for a few classic skits. I didn't see the Eddie Murphy part yet, but I've heard the same thing. It pretty much sucked.redwill wrote:I thought the best bit of the night was Bill Murray doing "the love theme from Jaws." Mr. Now Serious Actor Oscar Nominee really nailed it IMO.

They're not even that old for the most part. Chevy's 71 (looks like ahit, admittedly), Martin is 69 and looks like he's 49 Aykroyd is 62 and Murray is 64. Even Lorne is only 70.
Considering how much money these guys have they could all last for 20+ years
RIP Eddie Murphy, however, who is already dead inside

I see your point. It was good to see how many original members are still around. Better in this format than another awards show.newarenanow wrote:I thought it was fine. The rest will probably have heart attacks in the next 5-10 years. Murray looked healthy but OLD. Much older than 64.
Michaels may still be living, but he will be 80. Just won't be the same. He might sit on the stage and pee in his diaper.

Re: SNL 40th Aniv Show
From what I've seen so far, Steve Martin was the clear winner.
Recently gotten back into him as a comedian. Genuinely a very funny man. He's become quite a good banjo player over the years, and during his act he'll play this one really complicated piece and bask in the applause. Then he mentions how he was getting full of himself as a musician, and then he met Eric Clapton. He pauses and says, "He's not that funny."

As a Californian who deals with those types of people on a daily basis, and who deals with giving freeway directions as a part of regular discourse, I actually enjoyed the bit...... right up to the point where Taylor Swift entered. So unfunny, she could kill a room full of kittens.Jim wrote:* The Californians sketch had no place in this show. Not only did it not make sense in theory, it was not a good sketch period. The cut other things to do that sketch? How bad were the other sketches?
When you're one of the motherfcking Beatles, you can perform for as long as you want. That's the perk of being one of the motherfcking Beatles.Jim wrote:Paul McCartney needs to retire from performing, PERIOD! He has that old person shaky cotton mouth thing going on which is NOT good for a singer.
The other day, I said the original cast tends to get perhaps a bit more praise than they really merit, and that the early 80s crew was more deserving. After watching much of the special, I didn't realize I was really just thinking about this one solitary season. Ed Grimley, Willie and Frankie, Fernando Lamas, Minkman Toys, Synchronized Swimming, Jackie Roger Jr.'s $100,000 Jackpot Wad......Jim wrote:* I know that the original cast gets a lot of cred for the show... but it is amazing to think what came out of the 84-85 season. Billy Crystal and Martin Short were only on the show for 1 season. Think about their characters and then consider that all of that is from only 1 season.
I love how he came out and just completely missed his mark. He literally had two jobs to do, and he wiffed on the easiest one. "Keith, go out on stage and walk to the 'x' on the floor and deliver your lines." And he goes out and is like, "Ohthisistheband, I'lljuststandhere. PaulMcCartney!"MalkinIsMyHomeboy wrote:As long as Keith Richards is alive, they can outlast him
