Yeah, guilty as charged. I was posting on another economics/stock oriented board this morning where that's an accepted practice and it just kind of filtered over.
I fixed it.

Couple of solid days of gains too. DJI approaching 11,500.
Then you realize it was over 12,800 not too long ago and started the year over 11,500. Oh well...baby steps.

It seems to be moving around without any rhyme or reason. I'm assuming retartedly low interest rates result in ridiculous amounts of cash invested in equities.

Brazil, New Zealand, Austrailia, Swiss... All that new money doesn't have to stay at home, and a good portion of it isn't.

Twist is a monetary attempt at selling short term bonds to raise money and then turn around and use that money to buy long term bonds.
Why would you do that? Because the objective is to drive mortgage rates even lower. Most Mortgage rates are pegged to the ten year bond.
The Fed figures that if they can't spur home purchases they can increase the number of construction jobs and that will have a multiplier effect.
The market yesterday is calling BS and insisting (rightfully so) that monetary policy in the absensce of intelligent fiscal policy will fail. (the funny part is that the same scenario is causing the turmoil in the Euro zone, the difference is that since the Euro zone are sovereign states, they can't have a unified Fiscal policy. The UsA can, but Washington seems far to incompetant.)

holy crap is everything falling like a Sedin twin today. Closed down 300 yesterday...starts down almost around 400 today. Right when things were starting to gain some traction again! Bernake should just never speak again! Nobody likes what he has to say!
What do you all think is the next step the government WILL take? What do you think the next step is that the government (or anyone else) SHOULD take?

I work at an FX company, and monitor mainly dollar vs euro all day. We're down nearly 8% from 3 weeks a go, with the best rates since February. This is basically all due to what's going on in Europe. The Euro's downward trend appears to continue, with little hope of any near-term solution for Greece. Dollar is nice!

It really is a spending problem. We could confiscate every cent from every millionaire in the country and we could only run the government a few weeks. We are totally dependent on borrowed money.thehockeyguru wrote:Stop writing checks.JeffDFD wrote:What do you think the next step is that the government (or anyone else) SHOULD take?

I have no problem paying my fair share, and I have no problem with Buffett saying the rich should pay more. What I don't like is the government taking this money from certain individuals and giving it to individuals they deem worthy.pittsoccer33 wrote:It really is a spending problem. I just don't buy the claim that taxing the rich will slow growth. When you have CEO's making 10's of millions of dollars they aren't seeing their check shrink to hire new employees.

That’s like being asked to select between two houses when one’s condemned and the other’s on fire. In that case, the condemned house looks pretty good, but only by comparison.itissteeltime wrote:I work at an FX company, and monitor mainly dollar vs euro all day. I agree and disagree with this. This applies more to the small business owners more than CEOs.thehockeyguru wrote:

Semi-unrelated note. I've been reading a lot about Andrew Mellon lately. His policies were very intriguing. What he believed was higher tax rates on the rich just forced them to move money to non-taxable locations (i.e. munis and offshore accounts). Now I'm no CPA or tax code guru but i'd imagine that if i was a millionaire I would do the same thing. His belief was that tax rates had to be a reasonable amount for everyone that was willing to pay their share, which I 100% agree with.

Re: Stock Market
My understanding when you are a small business owner, you incorporate that business to limit your liability if the company goes south. With that being the case, even if you are the owner you are getting a check from the company. So essentially you control what you make (and what you pay in taxes. The remainder of the profits can be held on companies balance sheet in retained earnings.mac5155 wrote:I agree and disagree with this. This applies more to the small business owners more than CEOs.

Re: Stock Market
Corporate tax is different than individual income tax though. I've heard buffet and others argue for a higher personal tax, but a lower corporate tax. If that's the case there would be more money to hire employees.KennyTheKangaroo wrote:corporations pay income tax though, too.

Re: Stock Market
Depends on what type of corporation you setup whether it be a "C" corp or an "S" corp. The problem of double taxation allows individuals who own a small to only be taxed once.KennyTheKangaroo wrote:how would you say that the corporate tax is different?
If you choose to be an "S" corp you are only taxed at the individual level and not at the corporate level. Corporate taxing is different because you are taxed both at the corporate level and the indivdual shareholder level.
