Two-step vaccine may offer "universal" flu jab.
Two-step vaccine may offer "universal" flu jab.

Seasonal influenza kills 250,000 to 500,000 people a year globally, including 36,000 in the United States. Pandemics often kill more and while H1N1 has not been especially deadly, it has killed far more children, young adults and pregnant women than seasonal flu usually does.
The experimental vaccine protected animals against H5N1 bird flu, as well. While avian influenza only rarely infects people, it has killed 296 of the 500 sickened by it since 2003.

They also feed animals a higher protein diet since than other bugs since they're often full of blood. Valuable to the food chain.PensFanInDC wrote:While I really amdoublem wrote:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38269316

Good start.about this I have to think about it a little. Every living thing has a purpose and the only purpose I think mosquitos have is population control (i.e. spreading of disease).

Well I figured food chain was an obvious purpose. Everything is food for something else. The high protein fact is pretty cool though.Corvidae wrote:They also feed animals a higher protein diet since than other bugs since they're often full of blood. It's the reason I don't kill spiders in my house. They eat other bugs. Unless it's in my shower or my bedroom. Those places are off limits to spiders.

Bathroom and bedroom is off limits to all bugs and other household pests. Only our pets (dog, cats), and humans in those places.Corvidae wrote:That is the exact same policy I have.PensFanInDC wrote:It's the reason I don't kill spiders in my house. They eat other bugs. Cool. That’s the preliminary indication of a new study directed by psychology graduate student Helle Larsen of Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Adults carrying at least one copy of a long version of the dopamine D4 receptor gene, dubbed DRD4, imbibed substantially more alcohol around a heavy-drinking peer than did others who lacked that gene variant, Larsen’s group reports in a paper published online July 7 in Psychological Science.

Effects on Personality May Be Mechanism of Antidepressant Effectiveness.
Effects on Personality May Be Mechanism of Antidepressant Effectiveness.
While the neurochemical effects of SSRIs are known, how those changes act to reduce depression is not clear. These results contradict the prevailing assumption that changes seen in personality traits in patients taking SSRIs are a result of the drugs’ effects on depression. SSRIs may alter personality directly—and thus lift depression—or may act on a third factor that underlies both. CT may alter personality by a different path. Continued research on how these treatments work can provide a clearer understanding of the mechanism of action of SSRIs and how treatment can be best used to reduce depression and minimize relapse.

Even Darwinian evolution wont tell you that 2 animals got it on and birthed an egg that contained an entirely new species.bhaw wrote:According to P_G (and evolution), 2 animals that certainly weren't chickensPensFanInDC wrote:But where did the egg come from?
Then again I'm not sure if you are kidding...
I also don't want this to turn into a pro-evolution/anti-evolution thread so, if you want, I'll give you the last word and we can move on.

Yes, I realize that a new species doesn't just show up in one generation.

It can, since there has to be a point when the differences technically make it a new species. It's just a definition, after all. And actually, you can have dramatic changes in appearance and phyiscal attributes (phenotype) with zero DNA change (genotype) through an epigenic process called methylation (I must have brought this up at least a few times).bhaw wrote:What came last? Well, I was thinking more along the lines of 2 zebras won't give birth to a sea turtle. I can't remember the last time that happened.
