What sucks is that 4% is the standard cost of living increase (iirc). Coupled with my wife not getting a raise (for the second year in a row) and we are even more sure of leaving these jobs.

Not at all. That thread was about randomness. This thread is about famous generals, and things of a general nature and that ilk.GJ wrote:Sorry, but I've been away. Does this replace Juice's Thread of Randomness?

Yeah it sucks. Doubt most places give that much though anymore.PensFanInDC wrote:What sucks is that 4% is the standard cost of living increase (iirc). Coupled with my wife not getting a raise (for the second year in a row) and we are even more sure of leaving these jobs.
I actually make less net pay then what I did when I started 3 years ago at this job even with the raises that I've gotten because the cost of health/dental and everything else has gone up. I make more per hour, but bring home less.

I served on a search committee for a History faculty position. We had 180+ applications to our small, liberal arts college in the middle of nowhere SC. Generally, this is an entry level position where get newly or recently minted PhD's, and some ABDs. Not for this position. We had people with 10+ years of experience that have never held a full time faculty position. They've been stringing together adjunct teaching, online classes, and so on for as long as 12 years. Scary.

Re: General discussion thread
Are these common raises? I was offered a department max 3% raise and was a tiny bit insulted by it and fought for more thinking that, well, a) I was worth more to the company and b) 3% is lunch money c) the company was cheaping me out, if there's such an expression...skullman80 wrote:I got 2.8% I think. Re: General discussion thread
Ha ha, sounds like when I applied for my teaching position out of undergrad. There were two positions open: chemistry and history
Chemistry: 6 applicant, only 2 were qualified, I got the job.
History: 200+ applicants, all qualified, nephew of one of the board members got the job.

At my last job about 15% of my pay was bonus. Getting that taxed as a bonus was always great.

Re: General discussion thread
I think these days the days of getting even cost of living increase as a raise are not near as common as it used to be. Maybe I'm wrong. I know my company didn't go great last year, so I expected the raise to not be as high. Thankfully our specific department still did well so we are getting a decent bonus. I'd love to get a higher % raise, but I look at it as at least it's something.mikey287 wrote:Are these common raises? Like I mentioned before though even with the raises I've gotten, I still take home less pay(net after taxes and insurance etc) now then I did when I started due to other costs rising. That sucks, but it is what it is.

That's hard to believe and if true, they withheld at a much higher rate on that bonus and you got it back when you filed your return.mac5155 wrote:I got a $500 bonus last pay. Brought home $267 of it. Yay gubment.

I believe Bonuses are taxed weirdly. Mine always gets lumped in with a normal paycheck but it always seems like the bonus is taxed way more. I'm sure there is some stupid calculation used.

Re: General discussion thread
The bonus is being taxed at the highest rate you pay throughout the year as it's on top of the rate they use for regular income. If the bonus bumps you into a higher tax bracket then it may seem even higher. But if you were given a raise of 10K at the beginning of the year or given a 10K bonus at the end of the year your total money paid would be taxed the same at the end of the year.skullman80 wrote:I believe Bonuses are taxed weirdly. Re: General discussion thread
They tax a bonus at a whatever is the appropriate marginal rate. So - for the bonus amount - you might go from a 25 to a 33% marginal rate.
However, when you calculate your taxes, the bonus is just added to your normal income; that might leave you (in this example) in the 25% bracket or kick you up to 28%. Either way, the immediate/painful tax hit is moderated by the fact that you'll get most of that extra tax paid back in credit.

It's true. 40 percent federal tax, 3 percent state, 1 percent local, and 401k at 8% I believeFactorial wrote:That's hard to believe and if true, they withheld at a much higher rate on that bonus and you got it back when you filed your return.mac5155 wrote:I got a $500 bonus last pay.
