the basic message i'm trying to convey is that new clubs do not necessarily make you a good golfer. a good golfer would be able to hit a good shot on any set of clubs. if you're not looking to play regularly or work on your swing, then there's no reason to go out and buy new clubs and expect to get better. there's certainly a learning curve and if you're just starting, i doubt you'll be able to tell a difference between "good clubs" and "bad clubs".Twisted Wrister wrote:Taylormade irons are about 1/2 longer standard than the rest of the pack.
Clubs do make a big difference. I just bought a set of TM burner plus irons and have already seen a difference in my game. Cavity backed clubs as much easier to hit and get better ball flight. The new Rocketballz set from TM is phenomenal, but prob out of your price range. I am a bigger guy as well 6'4 and I would HIGHLY recommend the Burner Plus. Quick look at the internet you can get them brand new for 289.

Re: LGP Golf Thread
So length wouldn't matter? Thats the reason I'm buying new clubs. I constantly top the ball and have to bend my knees 2x lower than is even normal. I'm not trying to get a better set of clubs just a longer set.

length does matter, yes. but if you're just starting out, there's no reason to go and get the top of the line longer clubs, just ebay/get some cheap longer clubs.

yeah, i'm not arguing with you...it's the same thing I did. I was just arguing the concept that good clubs=/= good golfer.

however you could make the arguement that you could spend $100 at the driving range over the span of a few weeks and that would do much more for your game than $300 clubs that you buy from the internet.

Although spending $100 at the driving range with clubs that are too short could probably teach you some nasty bad habits as well.
So, consensus says buy some decent clones with the right length, and then go to the driving range until your arms fall off

I went to the driving range last week and got a jumbo bucket. Man that was a mistake. My hip was sore for days.
As far as grips go - will a bigger grip help improve anything? I get pain in my wrists a lot and start to not be able to squeeze the club as tight as I should. I was thinking about getting some fatter grips but not sure if that is what they are designed to fix.

I found a clone of the Rocketballz. What's so special about them? I'm sure a clone won't hit the same but not like I would probably even notice a difference.

Re: LGP Golf Thread
+ Sized grips mainly help with the tendency to over grip the club (which wears you out so that you can barely hold onto it late in the day). Most of us amateurs grip way too hard (from what I've been told). You'll find a lot of guys who build their own stuff may still use standard sized grips, but will load up with 4 layers of grip tape underneath to beef them up.
So I'd hazard a guess that they might be handy for you (also figuring that at 6-3 your hands are probably bigger than average too), but certainly not a necessity.

idk but my dad got them and i hit an 8 iron 180, so they have some distance. they're pretty light.mac5155 wrote:I found a clone of the Rocketballz. What's so special about them? I'm sure a clone won't hit the same but not like I would probably even notice a difference.

Re: LGP Golf Thread
I had heard from a buddy of mine (scratch golfer) that he hit the rocketballz and they went much further than his clubs, then when he looked at them the angle of the club was different. he said a rocketballz 7 matched his 6 iron.

Re: LGP Golf Thread
I think TM has made a habit of that. The spec sheets say my old (Cobra) and new (Ping) clubs 6 iron is 30°, while the RBZ 7 iron is 30.5°

lol, wouldn't surprise me if a lot of club-makers used that gimmick.count2infinity wrote:I had heard from a buddy of mine (scratch golfer) that he hit the rocketballz and they went much further than his clubs, then when he looked at them the angle of the club was different. he said a rocketballz 7 matched his 6 iron.

Just noticed Callaway's 7I is 31°, so that's cheating too.KennyTheKangaroo wrote:its not just tm that has done that, its more or less industry wide
I've been more concerned with picking up cheap old clubs (darn kids), so I hadn't noticed they've all started to do it.

This is why I bought the VR Pro Blades. I did not want my 7 iron to be a 6 iron. I mean mine are a little longer but I got them that way being that I am tall. If you don't want them "cheating" with the angles of your irons, then you have to start getting into the upper price ranges. I am talking the "players" irons or low to scratch handicap.

ive played them a few times - theres a course i play pretty regularly in phoenix that has these as their rentals. im too far removed from my big time playing days, i couldnt pull them off full time but you can just tell they are a serious club. my favorite before these were titleist 990b which i used to play in highschool but the VR crush themGrunthy wrote:Letang Is The Truth wrote:VR pro blades = boss.

Timber Ridge in Mt Pleasant is my "home" course. Its just under new ownership this year and they are really starting to fix it up very nicely. $22 for 18 holes and a cart, weekdays after 5. $33 for 18 on the weekend with cart. Can't beat it for the quality of course it is.

Re: LGP Golf Thread
I wonder how closely the "clone" clubs match the real deal. This could be advantageous to me. I would imagine though that the degree of the clubhead is the only thing they can match perfectly so it's probably pretty darn close.count2infinity wrote:I had heard from a buddy of mine (scratch golfer) that he hit the rocketballz and they went much further than his clubs, then when he looked at them the angle of the club was different. he said a rocketballz 7 matched his 6 iron.

obviously they're going to be a bit different, but i have clone clubs and they've worked just fine for me over the past 4 or 5 years.
