I sure as hell know I am excited for next year! With these changes and Mike Sullivan at the helm we should be going deep into the playoffs!

I think we have to remain competitive to keep Sid happy. He's earned that. Trade for Kane, get an asset to take the contract on. Retain and deal him next season for another asset etc.pens_CT wrote: Thu Jul 04, 2024 10:39 amKG wrote: Thu Jul 04, 2024 10:16 amEdmonton is over the cap and they need to sign RFA's. Would not be surprised if we do another Hayes trade to get paid to take Kane...we have a huge hole on 1LW. Kane would fit the mold. I think he has some type of trade protection though.
You don't think that DOC can fill that role on Sid 's line? I would hate to bury him on the 3rd line.

I like my idea. Sign Sid to one year deals if they are out of the playoff trade him for a 1st and then resign him the next year to a one year deal and rinse and repeat! Brilliant idea right??

I'll say one thing for Dubas, he's not giving me false hope this time.

Montreal’s GM is the former agent who signed Letang to the contract so I think he knows the terms .
Madden was also butchering Gryzleck and Beauvillier’s name. I’m not a local fan so I don’t listen to him. That surprised me. Thought he was more knowledgeable.
He is by far the most knowledgeable in the area. He mispronounces many names on purpose….

Problem isn't the old and slow part as much as the trying to play young and fast. This team could be a playoff team with a more defensive and opportunistic approach with a good power okay.Cow_Master66 wrote: Thu Jul 04, 2024 2:37 pmPens4Life wrote: Thu Jul 04, 2024 5:34 amDo you guys feel we are better team than we were last year at the moment? Exactly right. That's the problem with continuing with a coach that is stuck in 2016.Daniel wrote: Thu Jul 04, 2024 2:45 pmProblem isn't the old and slow part as much as the trying to play young and fast. Re: Random Penguins Fodder
I thought the defensive part wasn't *that* out of tune last season. We pretty much had what was needed to play a defensively responsible game and still put out plenty of goals. Instead, a chunk of Pens (you can fill in the names), like to... not... care about defending, or have no brain cells assigned to said task (again, fill in the names). We did have no secondary scoring to speak of, scoring by our top six was down as well and Crosby carried this team to vague relevancy.Sigwolf wrote: Thu Jul 04, 2024 3:39 pmExactly right. Our PP though.. good GRIEF. That doesn't need fixing so much as a necromancer to raise it from the dead. A putrid 15.3%. Our average over the past ten seasons is 21.1%. It's supposed to convert 1:5 on a team that has a PP with half a brain and an ounce of talent, instead we didn't even crack 1:6.5

Let's also not fire or replace the coach responsible for it, until it's far too late. I cannot get over how annoyed I am about our PP last season

Firing Sullivan at this point is futile. Trade Crosby. Begin a true rebuild. Nothing wrong with picking #1 overall in 2026

Do you think we're pretty close to having all the offseason changes complete? At this point, I'm thinking 'yes' with the notable exception of a trade for a top 6 wing who's currently hurting a team's cap, or the free agent signing for Ondrej Kase. Other than that, I think what we're seeing is what we're getting.

I think we are done. I think if there was a suitable deal for Robertson that came along (say Poulin or Puustinen and a 4th or later pick going the other way) maybe Dubas would bite. There were rumors he was interested in Oliver Wahlstrom. I'd say same type of thing...if Wahlstrom goes to arbitration and wins anything above 1M (say 1.5-2M), I'm betting the Islanders will want to move him because they only have 1M in cap space right now with 20 players. I'd move Puustinen and a pick for Wahlstrom, because they are similar "great shot" players with some differences.dark_forces wrote: Thu Jul 04, 2024 10:31 pmDo you think we're pretty close to having all the offseason changes complete? Other than that, I think an offer to Tarasenko was the last effort and signing a meaningful top 6 addition. Kase sounds more like a PTO option. Bring him in, see how he does in game action, see how he does taking some hits, and make a decision from there.
Any addition we make now means less TOI for Poulin, Puustinen, Puljujarvi, and lowers the chance of Yager forcing his way onto the team. On the backend, the defense has more than enough spare parts at this point.

I have a wild idea. What if Sid wants to help accelerate the Pens rebuild. He does not re-sign this summer. Instead he gets traded at the deadline for a 1st and bunch of prospects. He wins the cup or comes close. Then in the summer he re-signs with the Pens for 1 year. At the next deadline they Trade him for a 1st and a bunch of prospects. Rinse and repeat. Geno gets into it and does the same thing.
It would be wild to see something like that play out.

Unless Sid demands it, I don't think they'll ever consider moving Sid. I think he is the ONE guy out of the core that never wears another NHL jersey. I think if the Penguins want to accelerate a rebuild, they should consider moving Malkin next summer, when he has one year left on his deal. Out of Sid, Geno, and Letang, I think everyone can clearly see that Malkin's skills are declining the most. Some of it is skill decline, and some of it is refusing to change the way he plays.lemieuxReturns wrote: Thu Jul 04, 2024 11:14 pmI have a wild idea. Trade Malkin to Minnesota for the rights to Marco Rossi next summer. Rossi has 21 goals, 40 points in his first full season last year, but for some reason the Wild may be looking to move on from him. Or maybe you roll the dice on a guy like Kakko from the Rangers. Get a young, under 25 center who hasn't hit that 60+ point plateau yet. Minnesota hasn't really had strong 1-2 centers in some time. If they think they are close, getting Malkin for a season could be intriguing to them. Same with the Rangers, who could move Trocheck to RW with Malkin, but let Trocheck take faceoffs...if they want an extra push towards further in the Cup.
I'd hate to see any of them go, but I still think the notion of keeping all 3 of them from never playing in another jersey is just impossible to do all at the same time. You end up sacrificing too much of the team for those 3 individuals. They are great players, but you can't keep yourself stuck in the middle for another 3 years for all 3 of the core.
Commit to Sid, move Malkin next summer, maybe move Karlsson next summer, and let Sid and Letang finish out their careers here. It's not a shot at Malkin, he was often my favorite over Sid, but, he's the one with the shortest contract and the declining skills.

No matter how many times people on this board repeat the same stupid scenario, it does not become any more palatable or reasonable. From the start, one of the main goals of "the core" remaining together is so that they can play their entire career with one team. This is a rare feat that has been accomplished by only a few elite players. Lemieux did it, as did players like Yzerman, Lidstrom, Bossy, Brodeur, and Mikita... but Gretzky, Orr, Esposito, Hull, Coffey, Bourque, etc... did not.
Few greats in any league played their entire career with one team. The moment Crosby accepts being traded for whatever ridiculous scenario a fan comes up with is the moment his legacy of being a career Pen is over. Any of the aforementioned players could have done the same thing to help their team. Would it be worth it at the expense of their legacy... hell no.

If Crosby wants to stay, you pay whatever he asks for.
You don't build the team according to what Sid wants, if you're also rebuilding, but maybe throw a bone here and there. I think that's what we're seeing.

A few people in this thread (and several in the past) have suggested trading Crosby at the deadline and re-signing him the next season. That is fantasy-land, and destroys the 'one-team' legacy. If he wants to move on, honor it, but if he wants to remain a Pen for his career, that nonsense erases it.Puck-Lurker wrote: Fri Jul 05, 2024 12:40 amIf Crosby wants to leave, you do your best to facilitate that.Sigwolf wrote: Fri Jul 05, 2024 12:26 amNo matter how many times people on this board repeat the same stupid scenario, it does not become any more palatable or reasonable. Sidney Crosby has shown nothing but loyalty to one team and one woman.
He is going to re-sign his contract to see his Name and Jersey hanging in the rafters for Penguins fans to see. The return of Jagr, and all of the forgiveness love he received, (and possible words from Jagr about how he loves Pittsburgh) will sway Crosby to stay.
Any thoughts of trrading him is idiotic.

Seeing that this thread is now 140 pages long, thinking we should probably ask mods to lock this thread and start a 2024-2025 Season Random Fodder thread. Anyone else on board?
