Did anyone ever read the Denial of Death and if so, thoughts? Read it about 2 years ago.

Crime and Punishment is an incredible novel on many levels. The whole idea and conclusion of Svidrigailov's "exile" to America is one of the most haunting things I have encountered in art, ranking with scenes from Bergman and Tarkovsky.

Spoiler:
That was an incredibly intense sequence of events...the whole time you really have no idea what he's capable of and it even flashes to the point where you think he's going to murder dounia....then he kills himself instead

Just finished up book 3 of the Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare. I believe they're classified as young adult, but they're fantastic novels.

I'm 100 pages or so from finishing Jeff Shaara's Steel Wave, the second of his World War II trilogy. Well, he actually has a Pacific book out now...so 2nd of 4 books. Not bad, mostly told from the command level (Rommel, Patton, Eisenhower).

I'm also listening to Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken on audiobook. Edward Hermann, of the History Channel and Gilmore Girls, is the perfect voice actor for the book.

What a story, too.
Spoiler:
Louis Zamperini is an Olympic distance runner in the 1936 Olympics who actually meets Hitler after finishing well enough to get the Fuhrer's attention. He joins the U.S. Army Air Corps and is commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to a B24 as its bombardier. Interestingly enough, his plane crashes while on a search and rescue mission. He and two others survive the crash, and live on a raft for 40+ days, drifting 2000+ miles into Japanese held territory. He is rescued, only to be tortured for 2+ years by a malevolent Japanese camp guard. Awful, awful stuff.
The author's personal story is quite interesting, as well. Hillenbrand suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which severely limits her ability to write and research. This book took 10 years to write and she never met Zamperini (who is still alive). Most of her research was done from home, writing letters, and using web archives. She was unable to promote the book with a tour, so the 94 year old veteran did the tour for her.

Blackwater by Jeremy Scahill is a 456 page lefty rant that could be reduced by 450 pages or so. Oliver Stone should get the movie rights. I thought Michael Moore would be suited but Stone likes to really draw things out and he's just as nutty as Moore. If you think Henry Waxman is a heroic leader you'll probably love the book. Heavily endorsed by far lefty/socialists like Naomi Klein and Bill Moyers.

Neverwhere and American Gods are more complex and more interesting to me, but Stardust was a quick, easy, fun read.

in the past 3 days i've read "the reluctant fundamentalist" by mosin hamid and "persepolis" my marjane satrapi. the first one....i threw across the room as soon as i finished it. the second was a graphic novel and it was awesome. i have to read tim o'brien's "the things they carried" and write a three page paper on it by tuesday. having 2 summer classes at the same time........not so much of a good idea. they are both insanely full time.

oh. i also read the latest sookie stackhouse book last week. it was meh.

My wife and I found ourselves at the Barnes and Noble on Rittenhouse Square this weekend and on a whim I picked up Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I have read about 25 pages and am bored as hell. Does this book pick up?

Plus, I just realized the author was a total pinko radical....what have I done :scared:

I'd give it a little bit more than 25 pages.

I started the adventure of augie march yesterday...i'm liking it, i'll probably look for some more things from Saul Bellow after this.

finished the Hobbit. Haven't read it since college, still great but more kid friendly than I remember.

Started reading Feast of Crows and Princess of Mars (John Carter series) and World War Z. I got to stop reading books this way, i have a terrible time picking 1 and sticking with it.

just started reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman. only about 200 pages in, but so far it seems pretty good. Apparently, it's in pre-production to become an HBO series.

Yes, it picks up — it takes a bit though. Prepare for many descriptive passages about Blomqvist's lunch. :)

I spent some free time this weekend reading Daemon and Freedom by Daniel Suarez (a two-part series). I guess you could describe them as techno-thrillers? The notable bit about these books is that the author almost exclusively used technology that exists in the real world (with some extrapolation for dramatic license, of course), and while the ideas aren't groundbreaking it was still a very good read.

Matthew Reilly - Five Greatest Wonders (This guy is my guilty pleasure...imagine the most ridiculous action movie you have ever seen in a book).

After that, Sum of All Fears.
