Re: Let's talk about music
so i threw a party last week and assembled my playlist for the night...it was good, indie-but-not-too-indie stuff. the strokes, the killers, the shins, interpol, the stone roses, the national, the arcade fire...stuff like that. it wasn't poorly received by my guests, but it wasn't exactly being praised either. then a friend of my fiance offers to put on a mix that she brought...standard suburban white girl anthem stuff...beyonce, lady gaga, maybe madonna i don't know...and it brought the party to another level. the overall "fun" quotient went from like a 7 to a full-on 10.
so here's my point...i pretty much despise that music, but evidently the people (probably mostly female) who will be coming to my parties in years to come will slurp it up. so what the hell, man? do i just abandon playing cool music that i actually like to make for a better party? do i force feed my guests genuinely GOOD music when all they're really looking for is something familiar that they like dancing to? kind of a bummer either way.

Re: Let's talk about music
that sucks, but I hear ya.
I tried that a few years ago. Had a party and kept Sirius Boombox on. Figured it would be fairly safe since they played a lot of remixed songs. Nah, zero reaction. Somebody I didn't know (think it might have been a guest of a friend's guest) recognized the Sirius in-between song bumpers and asked if they could flip around. Being that I was talking to somebody about work, I said I didn't care. I ended up going from listening to Pendulum and Underworld (typical minimal lyric electronic music with catchy beats) to listening to Britney Spears and Beyonce and Rhianna. Ugh. Every once in awhile that person would go on the porch for a smoke and to grab a beer and if they were out there for a long time, like minimum 15 minutes, I'd change it to something different since I knew Boombox wasn't going over. They'd change it back and then go back outside. I did find that everybody was content with Lithium, which is an all 90s channel, but this one was like "iwannadance....wooooooooooooo!" once she had three beers in her. After about 3 or 4 times of the remote battle, I ended up pulling my battery.
I think I might have drifted off point, but what I'm getting at is try to gauge everybody's reaction to the music. If they're enjoying it, keep it on. If they're indifferent to it, keep it on since it's your party. If they look like they're in pain from listening to Interpol or The Arcade Fire, I'd somehow bring up something about a recent show and see if you can please that person or maybe play music from that genre. Being that I'm not a fan of the "white girl anthem" stuff, I'd only use that as a last resort.
I've been trying to find the old "Santa Claus: the man, the myth, the slam dancer" clip that MTV used to run. I never did find it, but I did find the group that sings it and now have it in MP3 form. Woooo.

Re: Let's talk about music
Hey you wanna throw a good party you have to have a mix for that. I remember when I used to jet up Penn State a couple times a month I'd be sure to watch MTV late night when they still played videos and listen to I think 93.7 or 96.1 so I'd know what songs were popular and I could act like I knew what was going on when talking to a girl and her, "LIKE OMG MOST FAVORITE SONG EVAR" would come on.shmenguin wrote:so i threw a party last week and assembled my playlist for the night...it was good, indie-but-not-too-indie stuff. the strokes, the killers, the shins, interpol, the stone roses, the national, the arcade fire...stuff like that. it wasn't poorly received by my guests, but it wasn't exactly being praised either. then a friend of my fiance offers to put on a mix that she brought...standard suburban white girl anthem stuff...beyonce, lady gaga, maybe madonna i don't know...and it brought the party to another level. the overall "fun" quotient went from like a 7 to a full-on 10.

Some of the best odd ball songs thrown in party mixes have to be 80's cartoon themes. Duck Tales, Ghost Busters, TMNT, etc. It's a nostalgia fest in between the actual songs and sparks conversation.

I'm female and I would've much preferred your playlist (aside from Interpol, oh do I loathe Interpol). So please don't lump us all in there.shmenguin wrote:so i threw a party last week and assembled my playlist for the night...it was good, indie-but-not-too-indie stuff. the strokes, the killers, the shins, interpol, the stone roses, the national, the arcade fire...stuff like that. it wasn't poorly received by my guests, but it wasn't exactly being praised either. then a friend of my fiance offers to put on a mix that she brought...standard suburban white girl anthem stuff...beyonce, lady gaga, maybe madonna i don't know...and it brought the party to another level. the overall "fun" quotient went from like a 7 to a full-on 10.

I didn't care for their early stuff at all... then again, I didn't care for much of their stuff at all. It's odd... they have 3 songs that I really like... and everything else is just meh to me. *shrugs*Sarcastic wrote:I just loooooooooooove the early Donnas.

Well...most people are pretty impartial to music that they've never heard or just don't recognize...while i'm sure this was a solid, well thought out playlist with a ton of stellar tracks...you'd be better of trying to cater to them off the bat....i would have tried to start off with some super catchy cool modern or 80's electro pop...maybe throw in some stuff familiar to them...gain some trust with the crowd that they're going to hear stuff they know well and dig.....i've gone through this before, I'll play some CSS, Santogold, LCD Soundsystem and other stuff like that, if they're still not accepting then i just go to girl talk because i can stand it and top 40 people like it.shmenguin wrote:so i threw a party last week and assembled my playlist for the night...it was good, indie-but-not-too-indie stuff. the strokes, the killers, the shins, interpol, the stone roses, the national, the arcade fire...stuff like that. it wasn't poorly received by my guests, but it wasn't exactly being praised either. then a friend of my fiance offers to put on a mix that she brought...standard suburban white girl anthem stuff...beyonce, lady gaga, maybe madonna i don't know...and it brought the party to another level. the overall "fun" quotient went from like a 7 to a full-on 10.

Re: Let's talk about music
the sad thing is that, compared to what i really wanted to play, this playlist was already catered to a more mainstream crowd. if i had i my way, it would have been a collection of clinic, wolf parade, sunset rubdown, suede, neutral milk hotel, beta band, gorillaz, clap your hands say yeah, neutral milk hotel, pulp, tap tap, the rapture, the walkmen and massive attack.Troy Loney wrote:Well...most people are pretty impartial to music that they've never heard or just don't recognize...while i'm sure this was a solid, well thought out playlist with a ton of stellar tracks...you'd be better of trying to cater to them off the bat....i would have tried to start off with some super catchy cool modern or 80's electro pop...maybe throw in some stuff familiar to them...gain some trust with the crowd that they're going to hear stuff they know well and dig.....i've gone through this before, I'll play some CSS, Santogold, LCD Soundsystem and other stuff like that, if they're still not accepting then i just go to girl talk because i can stand it and top 40 people like it.shmenguin wrote:so i threw a party last week and assembled my playlist for the night...it was good, indie-but-not-too-indie stuff. the strokes, the killers, the shins, interpol, the stone roses, the national, the arcade fire...stuff like that. it wasn't poorly received by my guests, but it wasn't exactly being praised either. then a friend of my fiance offers to put on a mix that she brought...standard suburban white girl anthem stuff...beyonce, lady gaga, maybe madonna i don't know...and it brought the party to another level. the overall "fun" quotient went from like a 7 to a full-on 10.

I think us music thread regulars should each put together either a best of 2009 or a best of the decade list...or both...
I've been working on a favorites of the decade list, myself.

It's more or less all the albums that got internet hype (pitchfork hype).....there is a lot of group think involved, but i have found that the internet hype is usually pretty reliable.

I've been lucky enough to have a couple friends rescue me from the pop trash they play on every radio station in North America over the past 18 months.Troy Loney wrote:shafnutz05 wrote:I feel like I am musically challenged...I have heard of like 2 of those albums, and maybe 4 of the performers

Troy... that list is pretty good. Kind of surprised Oracular Spectacular isn't on the it though... all the hype it got - and it is a pretty good album - will have it on most "Best of the Decade" lists I'm sure.
