Apparently it's pronounced "Gong" but will likely be anglicized as Kong

Re: 2014-2015 Pirates Offseason Thread
It's pronounced like Kahng (like the ah in Kahn - Kaaaaahhhhnnnnnn - or awe, awful, etc). The Korean's 강 = ㄱ is k (though a little softer, if that makes sense), ㅏ is the a sound (ah), ㅇ is the ng sound (like in -ing... biking, driving, etc). So yeah, pretty close to Gong but it's definitely an A.

They’re projected to spend $7.8 M on the four players mentioned above, plus whatever Kang will make this year. That’s easily the most they’ve spent on their bench in recent years, with all five players expected to receive seven figures, and four of them expected to receive $2 M or more.

Kang deal ended up being around $11M total for 4 years with a team option. Solid work.
Pirates have been signing a bunch of their arbitration-eligible guys. Harrison signed for 2.8M.

Re: 2014-2015 Pirates Offseason Thread
Payroll going to settle somewhere close to $95M (including Tabata's $4M).
They could potentially scale it back in 2016 by moving one of Walker/Alvarez, Melancon (will 3rd year ARB) and Burnett's 8.5M off the books. Those moves would probably make up for arbitration increases for Watson and Harrison.
The 2016 roster should have Kingham and Taillon and could have both Bell and Hanson. Burnett's 8.5 replaced in house and if both take steps forward in 2015, Morton or Worley would be expendable. Bell or Hanson could allow for Walker or Alvarez to be replaced by a league minimum salary.
I don't think they face any real payroll issues, so Hanson or Bell would need to be demanding a spot on the MLB team for the Pirates to push Alvarez or Walker out.
I think the team would just be better with Kingham and Taillon pushing Worley and Morton out by 2016. So if I'm NH and want to shed a little bit of money, I'm looking to trade those two after 2015.

Burnett's only signed for one year, so his contract will be off the books for 2016.Troy Loney wrote:Payroll going to settle somewhere close to $95M (including Tabata's $4M).

You'll possibly want him to retire by July.

So how many moves wouldn't have happened if they gave russ his 16 million? Probably Kang, Bastardo, Hart at least

Re: 2014-2015 Pirates Offseason Thread
The best part of all of this is the pirates put together a really strong 25 man lineup without dipping into the top 10 prospects really at all the last 4 or 5 years.
The only guys of note traded were Holt, herrera, vic black, blake taylor, grossman... none of those guys are anything special except maybe herrera
