Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
KD should be looking for legit top 6 talent. Preferably a top 6 center. Preferably one that is 24 or under. Those don't grow on trees. Young centers that produce are like gold in the NHL.
If we could buy low on a Zegras type I would be interested. I don't think KD will trade our top prospects but the Rangers 1st round pick and a couple of other minor pieces might be enough to get Zegras.
Put Geno on Sid's wing next season, which will probably be Geno's last and let Zegras be the 2C.
We need top 6 young talent badly.

If Geno moves to wing, this team immediately gets better. I've been saying that for 3 years.

Giving up a 1st for Zegres is good in theory I like buying low on him but then what? The organization is short on top 6 talent we have a bunch of guys in WBS who if they pan out are 3rd liners, 2nd liners if they over perform.KG wrote: Wed Feb 19, 2025 9:32 pmKD should be looking for legit top 6 talent. Until you get an influx of multiple top 10 picks I don't see a prospect pool worth giving up picks to build around.

The logical order is to draft talent. High end talent. Highest draft picks possible. Although this year’s draft does not seem deep, the top 4-5 guys seem to be legit. Next year’s top picks should also be legit and draft is deeper (though they always seem to say this one year away from the draft). After some legit high end talent is drafted, then evaluate to fill holes (trade, UFA, and/or RFA).

For sure....Looking towards next season for anything other than stockpiling more collateral doesn't make any sense long term.thehockeyguru wrote: Thu Feb 20, 2025 9:21 amGiving up a 1st for Zegres is good in theory I like buying low on him but then what? Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
Trade deadline is two weeks from today.
Hoping we see Grzelcyk dealt sometime next week, and then Beauvillier at the trade deadline. Anything besides those 2 pending UFAs is a bonus, and I would like to see Rakell moved (for the right price) or Bunitng.
We have 7 3rd round picks over the next 3 drafts. I'd like to find a way to obtain two more 2nd round picks, one this year and another next year. I think it's plausible that we could trade a Grzelcyk/Beauvillier plus one of our extra 3rds to obtain a 2nd round pick.

If we go into Rakell trade this season for Greentree and high pick (1st rounder or 2nd rounder) and we follow up with trade for Zegras for Rangers pick and prospect that would be decent moves for future, IF we then keep Trevor after 2025/26 season.
Zegras can play LW with Sid or be 2C and Geno moves to Sid's wing.
We got a bit younger, so small step in retool..
Dubas has hard work ahead, my biggest hopes will be getting out of EK, Jarry and Graves deals somehow..

Looking at this summer, you gain two retention spots. Would you retain on Karlsson, Jarry, or Graves to open up roster spots?

I have no problem retaining on Karlsson for 2 years and 5M AAV. The biggest reason is, at that price, I do believe we can get valuable, useable assets in return...something that helps towards our goal of getting younger.thehockeyguru wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 9:04 amI'm not expecting much this deadline.FLPensFan wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 1:59 amTrade deadline is two weeks from today.

I would not retain on Jarry or Graves because their contracts are longer, and I think we'd probably just be dumping them, without a favorable return coming to us and potentially having to add assets to a deal to get a team to take them.
This team should be able to weaponize cap space and retention slots for picks the next 2-3 years, so I wouldn't want them all tied up dumping our bad contracts.

My issue with Jarry is I don't want him taking a WBS slot when we have guys who need to develop. He needs to be in the NHL next season or on another teams roster. So do you move Ned this summer?FLPensFan wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 9:52 amI have no problem retaining on Karlsson for 2 years and 5M AAV. Agreed. They definitely need to resolve the Jarry situation one way or another. They just sent down Murashov to Wheeling. His play did not warrant the demotion clearly. Last thing we want is Jarry getting in the way of Murashov's development.thehockeyguru wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 11:37 amMy issue with Jarry is I don't want him taking a WBS slot when we have guys who need to develop. You're right KG. This rebuild should start in net, the sooner we open up opportunities for our young goalies to develop the better. Jarry or Ned have to be gone this off-season
Defense also needs addressed, retain half on Karlsson and move him.

I would move Ned this summer if there was a taker. See if Columbus would take him. I would actually roll the dice next year with Larsson and Blomqvist as my NHL duo. Put Jarry in the AHL with Murashov and Gauthier. Give Murashov 50% of the starts, and let Jarry and Gauthier split the other 50%.
If Larsson goes down, then maybe you bring up Jarry as the backup and let Blomqvist try to be the guy. If Blomqvist struggles, then maybe you send him back to WBS and give Murashov or Gauthier a look.
Everything I have heard though points to the organization seeing Murashov as the potential long-term goalie, not Blomqvist.

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
On the defense side, moving Karlsson would be a big help. Then I'd try and get a Brandt Clarke from LA or a Simon Nemec from NJ. NJ actually has 3 solid young RD. Seamus Casey is on NJD roster right now, he's played 9 games. Downside with him is he's only 5'9". Then they have Nemec in the AHL, and last year's #10 overall pick Anton Silayev. Silayev is a 6'7" giant who is said to be an exceptional skater. Then you have Nemec, who has been up and down between NHL and minors.thehockeyguru wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 1:30 pmYou're right KG. Letang keeps playing. Karlsson is moved. You bring in Nemec/Silayev/Clarke to be your 2nd pairing RD. Then I take a hard look at Harrison Brunicke next season. He wowed all summer from dev camp to rookie tournament to training camp. If he does that again next summer, he should get a 9 game tryout to start the season.
X-Letang
Pickering-Clarke
POJ/Kolyachonok-Brunicke
It's young and inexperienced, but hard to be worse than what we have today. I really want to see Kolyachonok get in the lineup because he has some size and likes to hit, plus has some offensive ability. He may be closer to what they wanted Graves to be when they signed him.

Speaking of Jarry. Maybe he isn't impossible to move looking at the contract Vancouver just gave Lankinen. I don’t know. After this season we will have our 3 retention slots. The only bad contracts we have are Jarry Graves and EK. I would definitely retain on EK for 2 seasons to get a strong return.lemieuxReturns wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 4:15 pmAs others have said, there is no point in retaining. Jarry I just think we need to move on from. He does more harm than good on this team and we have young goalies that need playing time to develop.
If we don’t retain maybe we can make a trade for a similar bad contract. Not sure if that’s any better to be honest.

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
Jarry since he has been waived..
- Has a 4.225M cap hit; 3 more seasons after current.
- Can play for WBS.
- Exempt to the AHL "veteran rule"
- Can be on the AHL roster, without ANY effect on the team (provided he not be dressed, then he has an effect on the team on the ice)
Leave him there. Marooned for all eternity in the center of a parking lot. His cap buried alive...
Just don't PLAY him. Don't DRESS him. Have other goalies there to actually play. (Murashov-Larsson)

For MG and AB we should get back a 2hd and 3rd or the equivalent thereof. If you get a great offer for Rakell you listen, if not you do any such deal over the summer or just hold onto him. I expect more assets flowing in here before the deadline. I expect Kyle to extract very good value in a seller friendly market.

Our stanley cup moving forward is the trade deadline, the draft and free agency. This era for competing at the highest level is over. Turning the page is the only sensible way forward. It won't likely happen but I wish Sid would accept a trade to COL. That'd be best for everyone.

COL has a bunch of spare parts from the junk drawer to offer. Extremely limited on what useful pieces we'd receive from COL. I think you'd need another team involved to get anything of value.Michael74 wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 6:56 pmOur stanley cup moving forward is the trade deadline, the draft and free agency. They have ONE blue chip prospect in Calum Ritchie. He'd be a very nice piece (in theory) and if all goes well could make the team next season. Middlestadt isn't doing well there and has been rumored to be on the market. Yet he'd still be a solid 2hd liner for us and is at a 50+ point pace. He'd also help absorb the cap COL would need to make the deal work. A deal IF even possible would likely involve these three pieces. Cap wise, need wise it would make sense. Both Middlestadt and Ritchie are centers. That would afford Sid a chance at a deep playoff run.FLPensFan wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 11:04 pmCOL has a bunch of spare parts from the junk drawer to offer. So, I knew Ritchie was their best prospect. I didn't think he was rated as high as he was. Athletic currently has him as 21st best prospect out there, while our best prospect, McGroarty, ranks 44th.Michael74 wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 11:54 pmThey have ONE blue chip prospect in Calum Ritchie. I don't know exactly what a Sid trade would look like at his age, but I'd stay away from Middlestadt at this point. I don't like his contract for what he is producing. He's a high end 3C. I'd take Behrens or Gulyayev (both LD) before Middlestadt.

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
But cap wise that wouldn't work, which is why Middlestadt would be included. Well, beyond the fact he's a center and an established NHLer. It has to work for both teams regarding the cap, the assets each team may want and are willing to part with. As well as each teams predictive trajectory. Ritchie would arguably be our best prospect and a '26 1st rounder would be a nice pick to add to our own 1st. We desperately need centers! We have plenty of defensive prospects, we're solid there and in net. Well, one never knows but organizationally we have several prospects on the blue line who have a chance to come in soon. The Center position is far and away our biggest organizational short coming. This would move that forward a bit.FLPensFan wrote: Sat Feb 22, 2025 1:06 amSo, I knew Ritchie was their best prospect. That would afford Sid a chance at a deep playoff run.FLPensFan wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 11:04 pmCOL has a bunch of spare parts from the junk drawer to offer. Extremely limited on what useful pieces we'd receive from COL. I think you'd need another team involved to get anything of value.Michael74 wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 6:56 pmOur stanley cup moving forward is the trade deadline, the draft and free agency. This era for competing at the highest level is over. Turning the page is the only sensible way forward. It won't likely happen but I wish Sid would accept a trade to COL. That'd be best for everyone.
to COL

To PIT

Middlestadt

I don't know exactly what a Sid trade would look like at his age, but I'd stay away from Middlestadt at this point. I don't like his contract for what he is producing. He's a high end 3C. I'd take Behrens or Gulyayev (both LD) before Middlestadt.
Listen, we're not winning anytime soon. We've missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons WITH Sid and Geno playing every game. Sid being here doesn't help anyone in the scheme of things. At least in this highly UNLIKELY scenario both teams go further down their predictive paths. Also, if he's not here we likely plummet even further and garner higher picks over the next few seasons. And the Avs have a punchers chance to compete for a cup over the next couple of years and bolster it by adding Sid.

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
SID is NOT getting traded, period!
