i'll definitely give it a try if i can find it. for a while, i was buying the bernardus 12 by the case. at about 100 bucks for 24 bottles, the people at the liquor store were looking at me like i was from mars.UVM2003 wrote:I'm a huge Belgian quad fan myself. I encourage you to seek out a Westvleteran 12. It's rare but you can secure bottles via uncommon means, ie eBay, beer clubs, etc. The Abbey that brews it doesn't like its beer to be resold so you pay a premium. In Rome I paid 10 euro, and I pay about 25 a bottle here in the US. If you're a Belgian strong fan it's worth checking out, even with the high price tags.

Ballast Point tongue buckler. Awesome - everything they do is awesome, though. Sculpin remains one of my favorite IPAs

Picked up a case of Harpoon Octoberfest today. Was looking at all the pumpkin ales, but I just can't bring myself to drink it in 90 degree weather. I'll wait until things cool down.

Fridge cleaning tonight. Brooklyn Brown, Bass, Guinness Pub.
Anyone got a favorite ale-type that's heavier on the malt? I'm really not a hops guy.

Penn Summer Berry seems to be a bit better out of the bottle than it was when I had it on tap awhile back... which is unusual to me, but perhaps since I had it very early in its release it hadn't matured enough. *shrug*

Any scotch ale is a good bet if you enjoy malt, as are English style barleywines. American barleywines are usually hopped aggressively.Eismann wrote:Fridge cleaning tonight. Brooklyn Brown, Bass, Guinness Pub.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
I had the Unibroue Éphémère (Apple) last night at the new(ish?) 1947 Tavern in Shadyside. Good food, solid beer, cool place.
The Apple was pretty interesting. I liked it, but I probably wouldn't spend the cash to drink it all that often.
Major FYI, though. 1947 Tavern is having the guys form Troegs come in this week for a brewer's dinner in anticipation of the festival this weekend. They are having a five course dinner with a dessert that I would love to try -- Troegenator Ice Cream Sandwiches. Yum.

I do like New Castle. Boddingtons and Murphys too, but less so. I find their consistency ("mouthfeel" lol) a bit thinner than I really like in an ale.Sam's Drunk Dog wrote:New Castle, Boddingtons, and Murphy's are good.Eismann wrote:Fridge cleaning tonight. Brooklyn Brown, Bass, Guinness Pub.

Gonna be in the 60's next week. buy them while they're still around. The things I've been hearing is that they're flying out of the stores.
Tried the new Shocktop Pumpkin wheat, I like it. I even managed to find a 2nd case of Pumking. Now I'll save a couple bottles for Thanksgiving

i had a dream about this thread last night. i was wandering around this big liquor store near me looking for all the beer from this thread that has peaked my interest. aside from them not having the ST pumpking ale, that's a pretty solid dream right there.

If you live in PA you can't really get it here unless you have your own means of doing so.Eismann wrote:Just checked it out. I'm definitely going to try that.Kraftster wrote:I'm the same way.Eismann wrote:Fridge cleaning tonight. Brooklyn Brown, Bass, Guinness Pub.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
Most of the schwarzbiers have stout taste with thinner, lager mouthfeel. I'm usually looking for thinner when I go to a really malty non-stout/porter, so I don't mind it. Sam Adams does one, Duck Rabbit, Magic Hat (Howl), those are the main ones I see around PA.Eismann wrote:I do like New Castle. Boddingtons and Murphys too, but less so. A good local brewery malty beer with very silky mouthfeel that is not thin at all but not as heavy as a stout is Troeg's Troegenator. Huge fan of that beer.

i've heard a lot about it (both in real life and in here). it'll be my very last attempt at pumpkin beer. it always tastes like dirt or makes me very ill.Kraftster wrote:I just bought some ST Pumking.shmenguin wrote:i had a dream about this thread last night. i was wandering around this big liquor store near me looking for all the beer from this thread that has peaked my interest. aside from them not having the ST pumpking ale, that's a pretty solid dream right there.

Just stopped at the Jiggle on 8 and they didn't have it. had the life and limb last night. really, really good. very similar to the bernardus 12, but with sort of a dry finishUVM2003 wrote:It's very solid - and not surprisingly it got better as it warmed. I'd of preferred pouring it at 50-55 rather than 42 degrees. Solid brew.shmenguin wrote:Gotta try thisUVM2003 wrote:Cracked the Sierra/Dogfish collaboration Life and Limb. It's classified as an American Strong Ale and is really a nice drinking beer for 10.2 ABV. The smell is very stout like, but the mouthfeel is thin with lots of dark fruit flavors you'd expect from a Belgian Strong Ale, finished with a nice hop bite at the end. With these two brewers it's obviously well crafted and certainly helped with a nice bittering hop addition. I'd prefer a bit more hops up front, but since I picked up two 750mls I'll age the second one.
Now, if I could just get my hands on Stone 15...

Dogda Irish Red Ale (aged in Bourbon barrels) last night. Wow was it good. I couldn't believe how balanced the flavors were.
