I'm not quite sure where I am as far as running yet. Steps still causing some pain when trying to run up them, and even the most minimal distance (anything more than a block or two) starts getting painful. Mentioned upthread is that the docs caught a bone bruise/ligament sprain along with some other stuff a few weeks back thanks to an xray and an MRI.
Or as awkward as this sounds in this thread, is rest the best thing for me right now? Just losing my mind at this point since I can't run or skate.

With knees its really best to just let it mend. You could do one of those hand bike machines in your gym if they have one. Other than that, stay off it bro. It's hard, I know, but better to heal up then do more damage.JS© wrote:any cardio that you could suggest for somebody with a gimpy knee?

Yea. I have dealt with this injury and the more you do the worse it will feel. Just you have to let it mend. Generally for a grade 2 ligament sprain its 4-6 weeks.PensFanInDC wrote:With knees its really best to just let it mend. You could do one of those hand bike machines in your gym if they have one. Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
This is a good approach, but you can also vary your cardio from steady-state running to more of an interval approach. It's shorter and way more intense, but you will find the results to be more favorable. It will build your VO2 max and burn fat much more efficiently than running distances (which burn fat AND muscle). Never hurts to refresh your knowledge on that, http://www.t-nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1526539PensFanInDC wrote:Try to make the cardio part of your strength training. With where you are in relation to your goals I think you would benefit greatly from calisthenics over weight lifting and cardio. A circuit of burpees, push ups, crunches, flutter kicks, bear crawls, jumping jacks, etc. will give you all you need. 8 stations, 2 minutes a piece, 3 rounds. After each round do a ladder of 40 yard sprints and 10 burpees or pushups. 1st sprint, 10 pushups. 2nd sprint, 9 pushups. And so on down to 1 pushup or burpee.

I agree with others who say to swim. Alternative, cycling might be a better long-term solution for you. Developing a bad knee from running can often turn into a chronic injury. Just too much impact. Good luck and try not to come back to running too quickly.JS© wrote:any cardio that you could suggest for somebody with a gimpy knee?

Yeah, it was a grade 2 MPFL sprain and a grade 3 bruise to my tibia. I thought those might have been backwards, but a grade 3 ligament sprain is practically a ligament tear. Doc recommended "light walking", which I think that's covered when I make my daily rounds in the office. If she's recommending light walking then it's definitely not torn.Rylan wrote:Yea. Gym is ellipticals/treadmills/bikes and of course weight machines, although that might change come January 1. No hand bikes that I know of. Being that this happened on the first weekend of October, I'm more or less looking at post-Thanksgiving?

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
A sprain is a tear. A grade 2 sprain is generally perceived as a partial tear. The bone bruise is probably where the majority of your pain is coming from.
Grade 1 is a minor minor tear. Short recovery time.
Grade 2 is a partial tear and requires a month+ to heal.
Grade 3 is a complete tear and that is no bueno.
Like I said, I have dealt with this injury and it takes awhile. But as long as you rest you shouldn't have long term effects. I didn't rest and now I have chronic knee problems that have plagued me since the injury occurred. Just rest up. You will be back to full health shortly, no need to aggravate it this late in recovery.

Step 1: go into the exercise room and report back as to what equipment it has. If you can't describe it, take pics and post them here.MRandall25 wrote:Currently I have nothing, but I have a dumbbell set at home that only has 40 lbs of weights.

Step 2: since you are already going to the exercise room anyway, why not catch a quick workout there?
Step 3: get your weight set from home to your current residence. Don't worry about not having enough weight. You can always buy more plates at a sporting goods store or craigslist.
Step 4: after your equipment is itemized, we'll put together a basic routine you can follow.

You can definitely find an indoor pool thats heated. 99% of the school districts have time for you on the weekends...
Oh and don't give me that **** about it being cold

Practically torn being like torn the whole way through, which is (like you said) no bueno.
That's definitely worth looking into. I didn't know about pool time on the weekends. Can't remember if I mentioned it in another post or if I lost it during cleanup, but I am looking for another gym, preferably one with a pool and some extras. I'm paying $50/mo right now, but the only things I'm using are the treadmill and a few weight machines which can probably be found in any gym. Now if I could pay that same fee and get some extras, I'll leave there in a second. You can definitely find an indoor pool thats heated. 99% of the school districts have time for you on the weekends...

Started playing soccer (again) recently. We entered a 5 on 5 tournament yesterday. In our first game we totally dominated the other team, yet lost 2-1. We had probably 15 scoring chances and blew 14 of them. They had 3 and scored on 2.
1. I was in goal
2. The other team was comprised of high school players

That can be tough. I play intramural soccer every year with some friends. It's 6 vs. 6 on a small field with indoor size nets. I play goalie most times. Our first game was against the Penn State club indoor team. We lost 4-1. They had roughly 45 shots on net, we had 2. They asked me after the game if I was interested in joining the team. I just laughed and said, "Nah...don't have time for that. Thanks though."steelhammer wrote:Started playing soccer (again) recently. We entered a 5 on 5 tournament yesterday. Interested in procuring a weight set. Advice?
I've never owned one before and know nothing about brands or types. Of course, the top of the line olympic style metal plates at the gym would be great but they're really expensive without the bar and dumb bells. Used is fine if it means cheaper.

Last night I went for a jog after the kids went to bed ~ 21:00. Most of the way there are street lights and it is well lit but there is about a 3/4 mile stretch where there's not much light but it's a nice road (flat and straight, not much around) so I don't really worry about not seeing so well. When I get to this spot a helicopter comes flying up and shines a spotlight on me and follows me for a couple hundred yards before it peels off out of sight. No cops ever came or anything, but it was a very unnerving feeling when you are under that spotlight. At least they lit the dark path for me for a while.

I've done some biking, but not 70 miles worth in a day. From what I read, it's 60% roads, 36-38% trail, and another 2-4% of craters, potholes, rivers, and stuff. Registration doesn't open for another 10 weeks, so i have some time to think about it.
