That doesn't take anything from Lightning, the Garage albums, and especially Puppets (which is a very close 2nd.)
Surprisingly (or maybe not), one of my favorite Metallica songs wasn't written by Metallica.
The Garage material was excellent. I think Metallica is the best band in metal to cover others' songs.
Priest had some great covers
Speaking of, Machine Head's cover of The Sentinel is so full of testosterone and balls, it's almost unmatched.

I just found out Jason Newsted left Metallica/Metal Lica 14 years ago. Huh.

Awesome tone... really miss Halford during the chorus though.

Pretty much all Metallica covers are awesome.
Breadfan is another great cover. They do a good cover of Stone Cold Crazy as well.

Yeah Rob Flynn is no Halford in the vocal department that is for sure.

That's very good. Here's another one. With an improved solo since this dude is a much better guitar player than Kirk.

May as well post a few more. This is one of the most respected folk metal bands. They're from Finland. I listen to a lot of folk metal. It's a shame it's not well known in USA. I guess it's because USA doesn't really have traditional folk music like European countries do, as country music is a whole different animal. But folk fits right in with metal, as folk tunes and melodies and stories (dragons, medieval lyrics, etc.) have been used in metal forever. There is a ton of wonderful folk metal bands from Scandinavia, Germany, and even Russia.

Dream Theater and Machine Head are also bands that tend to absolutely nail the material they choose to cover.
Slayer's "Undisputed Attitude" strongly disagrees with you.

Slayer did Born To Be Wild and it was atrocious. That's enough to tarnish their legacy.

Yeah, it's at the Carnegie Music Hall in Munhall. Not listed on his site because I don't think yMusic, his backing band for the upcoming album/tour, will be joining him.
Edit: my bad... in May.

Have only seen them live once, but they did 'Breadfan' to start their encore.

Joe Jackson, ftw.
The original is actually pretty good. This is almost a note-for-note cover (which I normally don't care for), with added aggro and distortion.

I like that Anthrax were men enough to cover a song by the same guy who wrote this.

I thought "Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die" was a dead giveaway, no pun intended.
