Yes! My new tiny hero!netwolf wrote:http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=163208&hubname=nhl"My instructions to Colie and to Stephen are if an official puts his whistle away, they should put the official away for the rest of the playoffs," Bettman said.
You have to give this man high marks for seeing the problems & trying to fix them against insurmountable odds. Who knows? Maybe if they get used to having good calls made during the playoffs, they may adopt it for the regular season...ya think?
Nah!!! Silly goose me! One can only dream...

This is the playoffs. How many calls now that shouldn't be made will be simply because the refs are under the gun. I guarantee 90% of games where a team is leading with under 5 left to go there will be some tick tacky call that will be made that probably wouldn't even be made in the regular season. This is the NHL freaking playoffs for christsakes not the NBA where the refs make it a point to be a deciding factor in the game. The cup has always been won by grit and toughness, not penaltyzing a guy for looking at someone the wrong way. This is a joke and it's par for course with the "NEW" NHL.
This could really backfire on them especially when the whole playoffs come down to a special teams show. Why not he's already ruined the league with the gayest gimmick ever in the shootout.

A penalty call never decides a game; players who decide to take them do. If a player is on a breakaway late in a tie game and is hooked but there's no call, does that not also decide the game? I'm tired of stuff like "that was just a little hook, he shouldn't have called it." Either it was a hook and it was a penalty or it wasn't. No where in the rules does it say hooking is legal if it's just for a second, or didn't pull the guy off stride or anything else. The rule is black and white and should be called as such.FlyerNation wrote:This is the playoffs. How many calls now that shouldn't be made will be simply because the refs are under the gun. If a game, series, or the Cup is decided by power plays, then the other team shouldn't take penalties or should get better at killing them. The rules are the same as they've alwasy been. Jus because the league has slacked off on the enforcement of them for years doesn't change that.
And if the league was ruined by the shootout, then why is it that everytime I see one on TV or in person, everyone is on their feet and into it?

Don't you mean other kind of tick tacky call? 'Cuz the whole reason this is being discussed right now is because the regular season is FILLED with tick-tacky calls that decide the game & shouldn't!FlyerNation wrote:This is the playoffs. I seem to recall a Cup winning team from Dallas that profited from a tacky call?
And the shootouts, whether you like to admit it or not, are hugely popular! I hated them in the beginning & still don't like them deciding a winning *team* sport. Put five shooters in & I can maybe accept it then...three doesn't work for me. However I'm in the minority there.
