Jonathan Filewich and Ryan Stone with good strong training camps should make the NHL roster for 06-07 season.
1st: Andy Hilbert - Sidney Crosby - Colby Armstrong
2nd: Ryan Stone - Evgeni Malkin - Phil Kessel*
3rd: John LeClair - Ryan Malone - Jonathan Filewich
4th: Andre Roy - Max Talbot - Konstantin Koltsov

Stone and Filewich had solid camps last season, played well during regular season and taking their games to a new level in the playoffs. The next GM is going to love their progression over one year and I think if they are given a fair shot to make the roster this upcoming season, they could do it.
I would much rather see guys like Stone and Filewich be given a shot to make the team over one dimensional players like Ouellet.

Yeah, I'd rather see Filewich and Stone playing on the top lines all year before I seriously consider them for the big club. Christensen, for one, is more advanced and than them and would bring more to the big Pens on a top two line. I'd also hope that they can at least bring in a mid-level winger like a Sykora to play with Malkin. This team will be young enough. I see no reason to rush more very young players.

Stone has truly progressed at every level he's played. He just may be ready for that next jump.Bowser wrote:Stone and Filewich had solid camps last season, played well during regular season and taking their games to a new level in the playoffs. I agree with your comparison to Ouellet, however I don't think there is any need to rush Stone, Filewich, or Carcillo for that matter.Bowser wrote:Stone and Filewich had solid camps last season, played well during regular season and taking their games to a new level in the playoffs. What I would hope to see IF Stone and Filewich EARN a spot out of camp is something like this...
1st: Christensen - Crosby - Armstrong
2nd: Filewich - Malkin - Samsanov/UFA/Hilbert
3rd: Leclair - Stone - Malone
4th: Roy - Talbot - Koltsov
Christensen must be apart of this team next year. Out of everyone in WBS I think he has the most "top line" potential. I think Filewich has the combination of grit and finesse to complement the 2nd line the same way Armstrong does the first with Crosby. As for Stone, I think he's going to be the man for a long time behind Crosby and Malkin, but the third line is where he should probably be.

As for Ouellet, Surovy.....even Hilbert. I would offer any or all of them for a crack at the top spot. I can't imagine that clubs wouldn't want to give Ouellet a shot. He had a pretty good rookie season, stats wise.
There is alot of dead weight right now. A couple guys like Stone or Filewich make the club out of camp and it gets even more complicated.

Stone definitely should spend another year in Wilkes Barre, IMO, and I think Filewich will as well.
Both overall had good seasons and have taken steps forward, but both have been somewhat inconsistent in my observaiton, especially Stone.
The current outlook of the wing situation means that Filewich will almost certainly be in the mix in training camp, but of course that could change.

Filewich on the 2nd line? There's so many things wrong with that idea.NJ5934 wrote:I agree with your comparison to Ouellet, however I don't think there is any need to rush Stone, Filewich, or Carcillo for that matter.Bowser wrote:Stone and Filewich had solid camps last season, played well during regular season and taking their games to a new level in the playoffs. I'll give you Stone and Filewich could be a good line with Leclair as line 3a and then we can have Talbot, Koltsov and whoever lese makes it out of camp between Rita, Roy, Murley, etc as 3b.
Malone should still be on the 2nd line LW with Malkin to create space for both of them and then bring in a Russian RW to ease Malkin into the NHL or throw Kessel there if we draft him and sign him. But Niether Stone nor Filewich are 2nd line guys. Their games suit a 3rd line, in your face style at the NHL level and a guy like Laclair could help them a lot in their development.

Our third Line, within the next few years, could easily be Filewich - Stone and Carcillo.
You've got a bit of everything in that mixture.
I have been very impressed with Filewich. His skating is fine. He cut through the D in camp and throughout the season with ease. When you have a frame that big, skating is secondary to straight power.
Stone is a suprise. I pretty much fell asleep watching him in camp and early on this year. He's turned it on at the right time.
I truly hope Carcillo calms down. He gets under the skin of a lot of people, which is great, and he can make a punishing hit, which is good, but his temper is a bit much.
Show him a picture of Bonvie and say, "this is what will happen to you if you can't control yourself"
that oughta scare the pants off em'.
