The fan "always" wanting the coach fired phenomenon "study"

Post by IanMoran »

I know we have always heard the sentiment... Something along the lines of "good thing the fans aren't in charge, they'd have a new coach every other week". I honestly don't think its true, but I'm not entirely sure. I guess I'm weird in that I've wondered its accuracy before (not really just the stereotype / exaggeration, but if fans really call for the coaches' head quicker than what happens). I suspect we just hear a vocal minority, but I'm not sure at all.

In the most unscientific study possible, I'll turn to LGP. I've included the names of the current head coach and last head coach to get fired. (With some exceptions, I don't think anyone has called for the heads of Mike Johnston and / or James Franklin / Bill O' Brien.

Curious if I could get some people's HONEST (even if it looks bad that you felt that way now.. COUGHhurdleCOUGH), feedback of when they wanted / called for a coach's firing (or if they did)

Penguins:
Dan Bylsma

Pirates:
Clint Hurdle
John Russel

Steelers:
Mike Tomlin
(not going to go pre-Chuck lol)

College (please answer team you're a fan of)
Pitt Football:
Paul Chryst
Dave Wannstedt

Pitt Basketball:
Jamie Dixon
Ralph Willard

PSU Football:
Joe Paterno (PRE-SCANDAL, I remember some PSU fans thinking his time has past him)

PSU Basketball:
Pat Chambers
Ed DeChellis

Etc, etc....

Please do the teams you are fans of (even if not listed, and take out any of the obvious wouldn't want fired yet candidates.

For me:

Any of current coaches: I never wanted fired
Past coaches: I wanted everyone fired right about when they were, besides I never wanted Wanny fired (yinzer I know), and I wanted DB fired a year before the Pens did.

Dan Bylsma: I was in denial for way longer than I should have been. The joke's on me.

Pirates:
Clint Hurdle: No
John Russel: Yes

Steelers:
Mike Tomlin: Indifferent

Pitt Football:
Paul Chryst: No
Dave Wannstedt: No

Pitt Basketball:
Jamie Dixon: No
Ralph Willard: Yes

Bylsma was in a gots to go situation.

Here are coach's from my teams that got fired recently and if I wanted them gone:

Red Sox:
Francona - no
Bobby Valentine - yes
Farrell - no way, he was under Francona so he's good

Broncos:
Shanahan - yeah, it was time
McDaniels - I don't think I've wanted a coach more fired than McD. He was a scummy piece of **** that ruined what we had going by trading Cutler and Marshall
Fox - he's frustrating but there really isn't anyone out there I'd want. Though, if the Steelers somehow fire Tomlin, I'd love to fire Fox and get him

Penguins:
I started to talk about getting rid of DB after the Tampa Bay melt down.

Steelers:
Tomlin - haven't talked about getting rid of him at all. Indifferent to it since the defensive personnel is so bad.

Colorado:
Barnett - made sense given the rape allegations on the team
Hawkins - about 3 quarters into his career
Since then - indifference since Hawkins managed to pull the team into complete obscurity

I wanted Bylsma gone after the Flyers meltdown.

I don't think Hurdle is a great coach, but he's definitely hampered by Nutting being a cheap owner.

Penguins:
Dan Bylsma: I think they fired him at the right time.

Pirates:
Clint Hurdle: Do not want him fired.
John Russell: I don't think he's a good manager, but he was managing a team that was going nowhere. Indifferent.

Steelers:
Mike Tomlin: No.

Pitt Football:
Paul Chryst: I am at a midpoint with him; I don't care if he leaves, but I wouldn't pull the trigger on a firing right now. If he stays, and Pitt doesn't improve on 6-6 (8 games may the minimum, absent unique circumstances), then I would can him.
Dave Wannstedt: No.

Pitt Basketball:
Jamie Dixon: Hell no.
Ralph Willard: Yes.

Pens:
Bylsma: Should have fired him a year or two prior.

Pirates:
Clint Hurdle: There's no way anyone could do better with the lineup he has, so no.

Steelers:
Tomlin: Have been on the fence about this for awhile, but I believe more and more he is a victim of lousy drafting on the defensive side of the ball. So no.

Penn State Football:
Franklin: If he can bring in a solid offensive coaching team, I already love his recruitment abilities. Will be interesting to see how the next few years play out.
