Thanks for the info FPF. It is very very early but it sure looks like more of the same non-playoff team to me. Hopefully things change.

Yeah, I can get myself to be slightly more optimistic, but only slightly. The Rangers game was a dumpster fire, but they mostly going to lose to true contenders like that (just hopefully not as badly). They played a pretty decent game against Toronto, who figure to be a playoff team on their home opener, and came up a little short. Then, they played a pretty decent game against Detroit, another likely playoff bubble team, and got the win.offsides wrote: Mon Oct 14, 2024 1:32 pmThanks for the info FPF. If they can take care of business against the other mediocre-to-bad teams, something which they memorably have not done the past two years, and pick up a few points here and there against the legit good teams, then they'll have a chance at sneaking into a WC spot. I think the Montreal and Buffalo games this week will be telling. Those are ones they really need to win.

Let's hope that the PP ranking can at least remain where it is now. Stay out of the bottom 10.FLPensFan wrote: Mon Oct 14, 2024 1:07 pmIt's only 3 games, but here are a few stats related to the team:

Some more numbers as we near the end of October:
--Rakell is the only player on the team with a positive +/- at +3
--DOC is a team worst -9, followed by Letang at -8
--Cody Glass and Michael Bunting are the only regular forwards without a goal.
--Team PP is currently 12th @ 22.6%; PK is 7th @ 84.9% -- Winnipeg and Ottawa PPs are both clicking at over 40%

Some salary cap numbers in regards to the Penguins:
--The Penguins are paying 46.2M to their forwards, which ranks 21st. Of the 11 teams with lower $$$ spent on forwards, only the 2 directly lower than them, BOS and MIN, are playoff teams.
--The Penguins are paying 28.9M to their defenseman, which ranks 9th. We already know they are nowhere near the 9th best team defensively. Certainly not getting their value here. UTA, BUF, and CBJ are non-playoff teams who are spending more on their defense. UTA and BUF are #1 and #2 overall in defensemen cap spending.
--The Penguins are paying 8.7M to their goalies (which counts Blomqvist), which ranks 8th. We aren't getting the 8th best goaltending for sure. Amazingly, Washington is #32 overall, paying their goalies only a combined 1.9M, yet they are currently in the playoffs.
--The Penguins rank 14th in dead cap space, with 4.6M, which includes Nieto on LTIR.
--SJ is the only using all 3 of their salary retention spots. Only 3 other teams, including the Penguins, are using 2 of their 3 spots. 6 teams are using 1 retention spot. Everyone else has all 3 retention spots available.
--STL is currently at 50 contracts. The Penguins and 2 other teams are at 49 contracts.
To summarize, we're paying our forwards at the level of a non-playoff team, our defense and goaltending is vastly overpaid compared to their performance, were middle of the pack in dead cap, and have little room to take on contracts or retention.
Good times.
