The Defense, allegedly

Post by maopens »

The stats thru 10 games:

Defensemen +/-
Karlsson, -7
Letang, -6
Grzelcyk, -6 (His time in Pittsburgh will end before I can spell that name without looking. This guy needs to buy a vowel.)
Pettersson, -4
Shea, -2
St. Ivany, -2
Graves, 0 ... 0 ... Who had "Graves with the best +/-" on your Penguins Bingo Card?

Ugly would be a compliment.

I know what you're thinking, how about those Goalie save %?

Blomqvist, .911
Nedeljkovic, .874
Jarry, .836

I don't know why I am posting this. I have no answers. The only suggestions I have for you guys requires a prescription to get those meds.

It's too early in the season for me to have lost hope to this extent.

Let's Go, Steelers!

The Penguins as a team have given up 130 high danger shot attempts at even strength. That's the most in the league.
The Penguins as a team have given up 271 scoring chances at even strength. That's most in the league.
The Penguins as a team have given up 283 shots against at even strength. That's most in the league.
The Penguins as a team have given up 31 goals against at even strength. That's most in the league. (SJ is 0-7-2 in 9 games, and have given up 10 less goals)

Only NJ (12), FLA (10) and the Penguins (10) have played double-digits in games so far. The Panthers have given up 81 less scoring attempts at ES, and 39 less high danger attempts.

Last year, the Penguins were 12th worst in GA at ES.
Last year, the Penguins were 13th worst in HDCA at ES.
Last year, the Penguins were 9th worst in Scoring Chances against at ES.
Last year, the Penguins were 11th worst in shots against.

Again, this isn't playing bad. This is epic collapse level. The PP right now is at 20.7%, 13th overall. Overall defense this year is last year's PP.

Looks like to me that the message that the coach is preaching isn't being heard....Might be time for a change or something? I know it' a novel idea :D

In the basketball world, this is a team that wants to run a fast break offense but they can't get rebounds so they can't get out of their own end.

A rookie goalie, 22 years old. Just a few games of NHL experience. Stops 46 FRICKING SHOTS in a game.

Only the Penguins would manage to lose such a game 4-0!

It's been a crap experience. Shea, St Ivany, not been great but what do we expect. JSI's shine wore off after the end of last season and camp. Shea is Shea. Top four has been utterly dismal. Funnily enough, Graves has been meh and mediocre, which is a significant upgrade over last season, but maaaan did everything else just collapse face first into a turd! :scared:

Let's face it, this has never been a good defensive team and has always masked bad defensive with good puck sustaining offense. This years offense has gone from get the puck into the zone, hammer the team with forechecking, have sustained pressure, wear the other team down to shoot the puck in then chase it back the other way and hope the goalie makes a save. Not one line can do what even Blueger/ZAR/Simon were able to.

The players seem wore out mentally and physically and are just skating through the season.

If they're this worn out now, imagine how worn out they'll be at game 60. :fist: :face:

Unless they play a Devil's trap, there's no protecting this D, and there's not a snowball's chance in hell that will happen.

Not sure why I thought of this but "The Perfect Storm" was a movie with George Clooney, Mark Wahlburg about 20 years ago. It ended in a tragedy and while not Boston, it was nearby in Massachusetts.

Like the movie, it sure looks like Dubas and Sullivan are going down with this ship.
