Man, the sound of my youth (and many others obviously). Elvis has just left the building, for the last time.

I loved him as our voice, we love you Mikey, you were the very best at your craft. Unique, dynamic, substantive, you made the game, heck even the 16-58-6 83-84 team exciting! My heart goes out to all Pens fans and the Lange family! RIP Legend!

Re: RIP Mike Lange
God speed. Way back when the Kings played at the Great Western Forum, he and Bob Miller were accessible before games (when the Penguins were in town) and during periods. Early before puck drop, both would spend a few minutes to talk to the fans as long as they had time to get the broadcast booth. Between periods, you might have a chance to see them heading to and back from the restroom.
Both classy gentlemen to showcase broadcasting talent for the NHL. Both legends from the east and west coast.

I hope he got to see a silly seal slide sideways in Sausalito before the end. So long, Mike.

Still weird to watch a Pens telecast without him, even to this day.
There will never be another. RIP.

Re: RIP Mike Lange
The Pittsburgh Sports Broadcasting Mount Rushmore has now chiseled another legendary face on Mount Washington. Cope, Prince, Savran, and now Lange. I would say that Bill Hilgrove will also deserve being a 5th.
What a class act. I'll never forget hearing my first Mike Lange Pens broadcast back in 1974 and he let out a "Great Balls of Fire!" goal call. That man went through quite a bit with this franchise stretching over 5 different decades. An amazing achievement. He will most certainly be missed.

Re: RIP Mike Lange
I've said this many, many times, and I could never say it enough: Mike Lange is every bit as big of a part of my memories of the first two Cups as any player that hit the ice during those runs. He will forever be the gold standard for play-by-play in any sport for me. Rest in peace, Mr. Lange.
This quote from Steigy in Josh Yohe's piece at The Athletic is why Lange was the best do ever do PxP, and it had nothing to do with the catchphrases he was most known for. His anticipation was top-notch, bordering on precognitive, and he also had an increasingly rare ability to know when to step back and let the game speak for itself.
“Everyone talks about the sayings and all of the funny stuff he’d say,” Steigerwald said in 2021. “But what made Mike really special was so much more than that. His feel for the game, his ability to describe the game and that incredible voice of his. He was the complete package, just an incredible talent. There’s never been anyone like him. No way.”

Yeah.. knowing how to shut up and let a guy watch the game is so so rare. The real artists know how.netwolf wrote: Thu Feb 20, 2025 10:51 amI've said this many, many times, and I could never say it enough: Mike Lange is every bit as big of a part of my memories of the first two Cups as any player that hit the ice during those runs. Re: RIP Mike Lange
I had the great honor of meeting Mr. Lange in person in Stockholm in 2008. My friend Johan and I were standing outside the Globe Arena after the second game between the Penguins and Senators in the Global Series that year, waiting to possibly snatch some autographs, or at least see some players. In the midst of the chase, I noticed a lone figure on the edge of the crowd and immediately recognized him. Mike Lange, I exclaimed, pulling my friend and Julia, a Pittsburgh girl we met at our hostel, with me. Once we got to him, we introduced ourselves and I think he appreciated the fact that someone recognized him in the crowd at the Globe Arena in the Stockholm night. We chatted for a while and he only had good things to say about his stay in our royal capital. He seemed genuine and incredibly humble! We said goodbye and thanked him for the chat. A meeting and a memory I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Thank you for everything, Mr. Lange!

How very sad. He was so much a part of Penguin Nation.
