Mario Lemieux looks like a large, sleepy, and perhaps even lazy lion on a sunny afternoon at the zoo. He moves slowly, but with pleasure and something just short of arrogance. He’s enjoying himself and, frankly, who’s going to stop him? It’s his world and everybody has to pay to see him.
Even when he pounces, Lemieux does so fluidly, using his long reach and deliberate, powerful strides to do deeds that lesser animals can barely imagine. In a sport such as hockey, full of chaotic, capricious action and frenzied effort, it is almost comic that Lemieux can be so good while seeming to try so little. While others want to prove they are working, he simply uses his intuition and grace.
