Agreed. What a weirdo.shafnutz05 wrote:In honor of Halloween, my wife and I watched The Shining Saturday evening. She had never seen it before; I had seen it once before. Obviously, this is a great friggin movie....completely trippy, and I have no idea how Nicholson wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award.
The only part of that movie I can't stand is the wife....she might be the most annoying, grating movie character in film history. I don't know if Shelley Duvall is like that in real life, but wow was she irritating. I was almost hoping she would get an axe to the chest.

How did she like it? I've been wanting to watch it lately, and my wife has never seen, but she's not a big fan of horror movies or Kubrick in general so it's a work in progress.shafnutz05 wrote:In honor of Halloween, my wife and I watched The Shining Saturday evening. She actually really liked it....she is not the biggest horror movie fan (usually thinks they are cheesy), but she really liked this one. As far as Kubrick is concerned, she absolutely hated 2001: A Space Odyssey. I think she likes the more "mainstream" Kubrick stuff.eddysnake wrote:How did she like it? Re: Movie
Wow. Great that you brought The Shining up. I swear my wife is somewhat scarred by that movie or something because she brings it up every Halloween and she DVR'd it this year. Anyways, we watched it Friday night again. Love that movie. There is absolutely noone else who could've played Nicholson's character but him. If there was anyone born to be an actor, it's him. He's so good at what he does. And for that small of a kid to play a role like that, well that's impressive too.

Yeah, my wife's a big reader and she said the book absolutely freaked her out and had trouble reading it she was so scared.shafnutz05 wrote:I really want to read the book now...just to see the differences in King's version.

Book is pretty much totally different. If you have seen the mini-series version of The Shining, it is almost word for word like the book.shafnutz05 wrote:I really want to read the book now...just to see the differences in King's version.
Shelly Duvall's character in The Shining is the exact opposite of the Mrs. Torrence from the novel. She is tough, up front and in control. Not that it's Duvall's fault (I blame Kubrick).
One of my favorite King novels. Wait until winter to read it. Try and time it with a good snow storm and read the whole thing in a day.

Hah, nice. That's a pretty cool idea--hadn't thought of that before.PensFanInDC wrote:Book is pretty much totally different. I also read the book first, and I guess you could say it sort of "ruined" the movie for me. I don't mind events being interpreted differently for the sake of filmmaking, but I don't like it at all when they add things that weren't even in the novel at all, such as

Re: Movie
Meecro, I am inclined to agree wholeheartedly with your spoiler.
While we are on the topic of Stephen King, have any of you ever read the Dark Tower series (Books I-VII) by him? He started them in the late 70s, and FINALLY finished Book VII a couple years back. Absolutely epic story...you can easily fly through these.

I couldn't even imagine working on that movie. I like the movie, but what a bunch of crazies. Nicholson for once wasn't the most crazy person on set. Kubrick would make 70 year old men do 100+ takes and made actors cry on set. He would tell Shelly Duvall she sucked and she almost had a nervous breakdown. Kubrick has to be one of the craziest SOB to ever live. He would call up Stephen King at 3 am and ask him if he believed in god.

I watched it a couple weeks ago and loved it. It was written right after Army of Darkness and you can tell, there are some hilarious parts that had me burst out laughing.neophool wrote:working up the courage to watch Drag me to Hell.

If you factor in the level of alcohol I had consumed at the time, I probably was functioning at the level of a 16 year old. That said it wasn't that funny, but I found the chick in it very attractive.meecrofilm wrote:I was wondering if anyone over the age of 16 would find that movie funny.Idoit40fans wrote:I watched Sex Drive unrated the other day, it was...interesting.

Re: Movie
I read the dark tower series a couple of years ago. I thought the characters were great, but I think that King really painted himself into a corner after the 4th book. I like wolves of the calla, but it's tonally different from the preceding books. then books 6 and 7 were just complete cluster F's. Especially book 7.shafnutz05 wrote:Meecro, I am inclined to agree wholeheartedly with your spoiler.

Ha. I just finished watching Full Metal Jacket last night and I can see how this Kubrick guy is a little over the top. Crazy movie. I kinda liked it, but at the same time I felt a little disturbed at the end. I've heard many quotes or one-liners all my life that I didn't know where they came from, and now I realize that most of them came from this movie.doublem wrote:I couldn't even imagine working on that movie.
