Every Hand Revealed by Gus Hansen. More entertaining than informative. Next up is Pulse by the wonderful Julian Barnes.

Re: Current book being read/just finished
My dad really like that book. He was golfing with Jack Hamm the other day and brought up some of the stories from it, and Jack was asking him who told him about that stuffnewarenanow wrote:I just finished John Steigerwald's book. I actually really enjoyed it. Some stuff he says/believes is over the top or delusional, but he also has a lot of great stories and some outside of the box views that actually make sense.
Good read if you haven't read it yet.

Looks good; bought it.count2infinity wrote:I'm going to start reading The Disappearing Spoon. I understand it goes into the backgrounds of some of the elements on the periodic table. So i think it should be a good read.
Looks good; bought it; started reading it. Dunno how much is Bourdain and how much might be his editors, but his books certainly are entertaining. Maybe not the best grammar or the most formal prose, but when reading this I can just imagine I’m sitting next to the man in a grungy bar somewhere. He’s half drunk, chain smoking, and getting his rant on about whatever is bugging him. And I think Bourdain ranting is Bourdain at his best.columbia wrote:Anthony Bourdain - Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook.

Pretty excited to read this book I read about in the Economist today. Think I'll buy it on the iPad (kindle) tonight since the hardback is only in the UK = $40+

Re: Current book being read/just finished
Has anyone read:
A Bridge Too Far: The Classic History of the Greatest Battle of World War II
by Cornelius Ryan
I watched the film again a few weeks ago and it's just an amazing story.
I assume I should just read the book too?

Re: Current book being read/just finished
been looking at some books, anyone read or hear anything about the following?
HELP! A Bear is Eating Me! apparently takes place in the mind of some jagoff while the bear is eating him. Sounds hilarious.
The Age of the Warrior: Selected Essays by Robert Fisk
or Neil Gaimens: Neverwhere or American Gods

Darkness at Noon - pretty good recreation of what it was like in Russia during the late 1930's. Also very good at showing how each faction from the revolution was guilty of not compromising and spreading propaganda. The description of the psychological warfare used during the show trials is rather chilling. Very good read, not a happy read, but def worth it.

Neil Gaimen is one of my favourite authors. American Gods happens to be one of my favorite books as well. Neverwhere is also a good read. I would suggest either!

200 pages left in Atlas Shrugged.
As a former Econ minor, I like the story and the principles largely make sense, but the thought that it represents what we are close to in today's society is ridiculous. (As presented by many who wanted me to read it, and I suspect didn't themselves.)

I liked The Fountainhead as a novel, but the whole part of it standing as a representative for the philosophical idea of objectivism is ridiculous. I would have enjoyed it more knowing that every word penned wasn't a result of some ridiculous philosophy. It would have been a better novel as well, untainted perhaps.pressure=9Pa wrote:200 pages left in Atlas Shrugged.

Also, she initially wanted to call her philosophy existentialism.
Sartre just threw up in his mouth a little.

Can we elaborate on this in the Philosophy thread?Dostoevsky wrote:I liked The Fountainhead as a novel, but the whole part of it standing as a representative for the philosophical idea of objectivism is ridiculous. What do you find ridiculous about objectivism?

What's hilarious is her gall to call out Nietzsche, when in fact his perspectivism, which he didn't even break a sweat over, completely obliterates objectivism, her entire philosophy.doublem wrote:lol @ Ayn Rand.
