I'm sure there are some idiots out there saying things, there always are. But to say Malkin is a sulker in the general media because he doesn't talk to them, no, I don't see it.Malkamaniac wrote:He did at times, but honestly, can you not say you're seeing it now with Malkin?
Jagr, heck, even Lemieux, both did not talk to the media when they first arrived, mainly due to the language barrier. And Lemieux never liked to talk to them. I've read and heard a lot of journalist from that time, and even today, that say it did make their jobs more difficult because they couldn't get stories from the stars, but at the same time, they never made more difficult on them.
Most people say that Jagr was actually decent when he first arrived, but couldn't speak to the media much, much like Malkin now. It wasn't until later in his career where he became a pain and rubbed the media wrong.

I just don't think I've ever seen or heard Malkin say anything negative about anything outside of his game, which Ron Cook has been to how many games? I don't even remembering him covering any unless it's really important.Ron Cook wrote:It seems more likely that Jagr would have a hard time as a role player behind Crosby and Malkin. How long would it take him to be "dying alive" again? Crosby, as the team captain, doesn't need that. Certainly, Malkin, who has had his moments of sulking here, doesn't need it.

I just feel it's the easy way out in journalism, to take a shot at a guy who's one of the best ever to play the game, and relate him to being the carmudgen he was in the early 2000's and that he's going to make "an already sulking at times" malkin and make him worse in the teamsmanship area.

According to Jagr in this article, Pens are a preferred destination.Tomas wrote:"Sport" daily has sources who claim St. Petersburg is the final destination, and that the contract will be fully finalized by the end of the week:

Malkin has said a few things about his game when he was struggling, and he gets down on himself, which is what "sulking" is. It has nothing to do with talking to the media.Malkamaniac wrote:I just don't think I've ever seen or heard Malkin say anything negative about anything outside of his game, which Ron Cook has been to how many games? I've rarely, if ever, heard anyone say anything about malking being difficult with the media like Jagr used to be.

I'm just making mention that Cook has alluded to the fact that if Jagr comes back, then Malkin's sulking will grow to a larger extent.newarenanow wrote:Malkin has said a few things about his game when he was struggling, and he gets down on himself, which is what "sulking" is. But he was also very difficult in the lockeroom, was one of the main reasons for many coaching changes, was difficult on management, and was difficult with the media.Malkamaniac wrote:I just feel it's the easy way out in journalism, to take a shot at a guy who's one of the best ever to play the game, and relate him to being the carmudgen he was in the early 2000's and that he's going to make "an already sulking at times" malkin and make him worse in the teamsmanship area.
Barry Bonds was the same way. He rubbed the media the wrong way and made many enemies.
Until Big Ben got in trouble and changed his attitude, he was the same way.
Malkin has sulked and made "sulking" quotes in the media. However, the media is not ripping on him or calling him difficult like they are Jagr.
Jagr may have changed. Who knows. However, you can only base your opinion on what you have seen, and the last time Jagr was here, it was bad in the locker room. The Pens have a great lockerroom right now by most accounts, so why even temp messing with it?
W/O crosby and Malkin, the Pens were a great team with a great lockerroom. With them back, (hopefully), they should be one of the best in the NHL. Why mess with that to bring in an icon during the end of his career?

There's just no reason to allude that Jagr is going to affect Malkin negatively. I honestly don't think that if Jagr would come back(never going to happen anyways) that he's going to be the same emotional trainwreck that he was enough so to mess with Malkin.newarenanow wrote:But he was also very difficult in the lockeroom, was one of the main reasons for many coaching changes, was difficult on management, and was difficult with the media.Malkamaniac wrote:I just feel it's the easy way out in journalism, to take a shot at a guy who's one of the best ever to play the game, and relate him to being the carmudgen he was in the early 2000's and that he's going to make "an already sulking at times" malkin and make him worse in the teamsmanship area.

And again, but to the original point, it had absolutely nothing to do with Malkin not talking to the media.

I thought Jagr was a really good leader for the Rangers in those last few seasons and he definitely gave everything in the playoffs.
Hopefully he'll be back in the NHL, but I'm not expecting it to happen.

However, he did a really good job to try and compare the similarities to each other. I will say fair point on Malkin not talking to the media, but Malkin never really stated anything that was happening to him. It was referenced to something that Bylsma had said. Not frustrated, not upset, but sulking, and then reference Jagr immediately after.Malkin should be beyond that. He is no kid. He's 23. This is his fourth NHL season. He is a scoring champion, a Stanley Cup champion and a Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoffs MVP. He shouldn't still need Gonchar to hold his hand through the tough times. It's enough to make you wonder what will happen to him if the Penguins don't do a new contract with Gonchar and allow him to leave as a free agent after the season.
Can you say Jaromir Jagr?
You know the sad ending to the Jagr era with the Penguins. An extraordinary player, he was so moody and sulked so much that he talked of "dying alive" late in his time here. He asked to be traded more than once before former general manager Craig Patrick finally granted his wish before the 2001-02 season.
I'm not ready to suggest that Malkin is going to be another Jagr. But it sure would be nice if he could learn a valuable lesson from Crosby. Crosby doesn't blink, doesn't shrink from adversity. He challenges it and fights through it. He's going to have bad games from time to time, but he is never going to beat himself mentally.

I read a lot of your posts regarding Jagr leaving the Pens. Does anyone actually know why he left? Everyone jumps to conclusions.
You don't know what he was like in the locker room and you certainly don't know why he really left.
Why does everyone jump to these ridiculous conclusions? ANyone?

Which is what Jagr started doing as he progressed through his career. He'd mentally beat himself up. He'd cause more problems than if he just played through it like Crosby does.Malkamaniac wrote:However, he did a really good job to try and compare the similarities to each other. Gonchar had to sit down and talk to him about it.
But again, back to my original comment, people aren't bashing Malkin for being difficult with the media, or being a bad teammate in the lockerroom that will tear it down, where he gets coaches fired or doesn't get along with teammates.
Cook was saying that he is showing signs that Malkin, early in his career, is showng signs that when the going gets tough, he beats himself up, like Jagr did, which is a fair. Cook also said that Malkin may change and learn from that incident.

What ridiculous conclusions. Jagr said himself that he was ready for a change. He requested a trade on numerous occassions.
I think it's fair to say that Jagr wanted out.

Agree to disagree I suppose, but Cook went out to again call Malkin a sulker in an article talking about Jagr. He so desperately wants to connect the two in any way he can.

I don't have the book in front of me, but Total Penguins talked about how he essentially demanded a trade personally from CP. CP was about to talk to him about a contract extension, and Jagr said "You don't understand, I don't want to be here".SCrosby87 wrote:I read a lot of your posts regarding Jagr leaving the Pens. The "early in his career" is me saying that. I think the 4th season is somewhat early. I do think by that point in his career though, he shouldn't need to be sat down. But then again, everyone is different.
There are some comparisions when it comes to that. And Malkin did sulk.
I guess we will agree to disagree. To me, it's not really a big deal. Malkin has plenty of time to prove that he is not Jagr and get past the "sulking".

that SN article quotes Jagr's agent... appears to be same agent as Crosby, unless there are two Pat Brisson's...
