I recall it being quite evident that RS wasn't too keen on that deal (based on his quotes).

At some point, you have to allow a GM to do his job with autonomy.
I think for the most part Mario does. He just has a soft spot for his old Country Club friends.
Starting to sound like my Dad in here now. He thinks the Pens drafted Despres because he's french-Canadian and Mario made him.
How else do you think Mario is going to make the headlines. Someone has to turn the country club into a retirement home.

I'm entirely certain that Shero would not have traded for Kovy, had he not been a former Penguin.

I really don't get this "insulting" idea at all. Shero may not want to risk much on Jagr. What's wrong with that?
SAT analogy...

"Insulting" is to Jagr's contract as "Selfish" is to Matt Cooke's suspendable actions

About his play in the WC´s:

I was not blown away but definitely impressed. I saw what to me was the fourth version of Jagr.

First version, say 90-94, was when he was scrawny but fast as few. He was quickly becoming a star but hadn´t reached his full capacity. Second version was 95-01, his prime years which combined the strengths from "Jagr one" but after bulking up. He was unstoppable. Breakaways were automatic goals. Below average lines mates were enough, he did it all on his own. "Jagr two" is in my opinon among the most dominant players hockey has ever seen. Third version was 01-06. He lost speed, got even bigger and added the slapper. His most inspired year during this period was still good for ~120 points and 50 goals. The Art Ross lost in the final round. More dependant on PP and linemates than before, however. And don´t forget his 15 points in 10 playoff games as late as spring 08.

Fourth version is what I´ve seen in these last two WCs only. Top speed still ok but he´s not very quick at all. The shot is great but not deadly and he can´t do it all on his own, but was most dangerous down low during plays of long pressure in the offensive zone, on the PP or when he got the puck with space to accelerate through the neutral zone. Still a deadly playmaker however, and strong on the puck with his size and reach. Great on the PP both as setup man and as finisher. Creative in moving around to find good positions. He was better this year than last year. Also, I think he´d be better off on the smaller surface.

I´d absolutely love it if he signed for one year and played like 15 min per game with say 90 secs per PP. He´d open up space for Sid and Geno and he´d convert on the space they´d give him. He´s still deadly if his company can open things up, which would happen frequently on the Pens.
:thumb:

I really like this summary.

However I think the first years with the Capitals would have been on version 2 if he had played with the Penguins these years. It appears the Caps ruined him as he was a beast
with the Rangers!

if you think the booing fans would have anything to do with him not signing then you seriously would need your head examined.

I never booed Jagr, took too much effort (lol). But the guy deserved everything he got.

How quickly we forget the nightmare he was in the locker room. Players disliked him in his final games as a Pen as well. Now in 10 years could things be different? Maybe. But who really knows the answer to this question. I personally don't think it's worth the risk at all.

But how can you honestly forget how bad of a teammate he was during his final days in Pittsburgh.

Yet, the booing fans of Pittsburgh will be to blame for him not resigning.

Yeah, ok...

No, Snake, I don't think you are. I'd love to see Jagr come here, but not at the sacrifice of the Pens long-term plans. Losing a guy like TK to sign Jagr for a one-year deal would definitely qualify as sacrificing the future.

I wish I had time to break this all down. The Pens, I believe have nine forwards signed. I'd like to see them sign TK, either Rupp or Asham (preferably Rupp), and Jagr. I'd also like to see them sign Dupuis for the PK. I'm a fan of Talbot, but he seems to me to be the most expendable.

No, I just pay attention to Penguin hockey and all of it's related stories.

I guess we can't all have opinions to share unless we have played in the NHL before, eh?

I'd like to see Kennedy "play nice" with a top-6 center, before declaring him an essential part of the future.
He did well in Crosby and Malkin's absence, but I'm not convinced that he is smart enough to adjust his game and be deferential to that sort of talent.
He's a puckhog and I'll stand by that until we see otherwise.

TK shuold be 2M. The pens would then have just under 6M to spend on three forwards. They could still sign Jagr and Dupuis and Talbot or Rupp. What signing Jagr will do is prevent the pens from seeking out a different forward in FA that they may have had an eye on.

Similarly to the game with the ball hidden under three moving cups...Sid, Geno and JJ could all lineup and do the same left-handed slapper. The goalie would have to guess which one REALLY has the puck. :D

Like I said before you have one PP with Sid and the net crashers, and the second PP with Malkin and Jagr doing the 1990s style rope-a-dope PP.
